20200603 00:54 trailing wife charger, I added it to the bottom of the roundup. Go ahead and add that he’s not dead as a comment in the thread — I have no doubt our readers will be as relieved as you and I. Thank you for the post and the update.
20200603 00:46 trailing wife then they are the hypocrites they accuse him of.

Absolutely right, Snowy Thing.

3dc, something to add to a comment in the Burg — a much better outlet for the natural high spirits of our people than getting in trouble by going hunting at this stage of the proceedings.
20200603 00:37 charger Just posted video of scumbags attacking a man in Portland.

I noted that I thought he was reported dead, but I was apparently mistaken about that.

So mods feel free to correct that part of the post.

20200514 21:26 trailing wife I remember that stage, Jan. Submitted articles go into a metaphorical hopper, there to be sorted through for suitability, polished if needed, commented on, and finally queued up for publication at midnight. Eastern time midnight, that is.

20200514 17:21 trailing wife Jan, you made four submissions — the same story from the Washington Examiner and the Daily Caller. I pared down to one, highlighted your comment, added key text from the article so our readers would have the key information and in future it would show up in searches, and set it for tomorrow.

Given all that, I would naturally have set it for tomorrow. Separately, except for active terror actions and really important political occurrences, anything posted after 2 p.m. ET os supposed to be set for the next day. This gives our readers the full day to ponder the implications. ;-)

20200512 13:36 trailing wife Today we’re making a tarted up version of my darling mother-in-law’s chili recipe. Mr. Wife happily chops vegetables for me and cleans the kitchen to induce me to cook it.

Huguette Sawicki's Chili con Carne
This recipe tastes even better reheated the next day, and can be frozen up to 6 months.
Makes about fourteen 2 cup (320g) servings.
Using the beef fat left over from browning the meat to saute the vegetables deepens the beefy flavor.
Prep time: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Cook time: 2 hours to overnight

vegetable or olive oil
3 pounds ground beef chuck
2 medium onions (1 lb.), diced
4-5 stalks celery, diced as a q
4 bell peppers, seeded and diced
3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
2 15 oz. can of light red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
2 15 oz. cans of dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1/2 cup red wine
3 10 oz cans of condensed tomato soup
2 bay leaves
1 1/2 Tbsp. oregano
3 Tbsp. chili powder
1 1/2 Tbsp. paprika
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp epazote, (a Mexican herb that reduces gassiness when eating beans)
1 tsp cumin, ground
1 tsp peppercorns, crushed
5 dried birds eye chilis, crushed

Frank's Red Hot Louisiana Cayenne Pepper Sauce, to taste
Tabasco sauce, to taste
4 chipotle chilis in adobo sauce, minced
¼ tsp each beef and chicken soup base (or ½ bouillon cube or 4 oz. soup broth each)

3 Tbsp masa harina flour
6 Tbsp cold water

If cooking in oven, preheat to 225-250F.

Heat over medium-high heat 1 Tbsp oil in a 10” frying pans. Brown the ground beef, stirring to break up, then remove the meat with a large, slotted spoon to a crockpot or a 6-8 quart Dutch oven next to the stove. Pour off beef fat into a bowl, returning 1 Tbsp to pan, then add the onion to pan, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, and saute, stirring occasionally, until separated and softened. Add garlic to onions, then stir for 30 seconds to cook off raw flavour. Scrape over the ground beef in Dutch oven, then add 1 Tbsp of beef fat to pan, the celery, and a pinch of salt, and saute until deeper green and softened. Scrape into pot, then repeat with the bell peppers. Add the drained and rinsed kidney beans to the Dutch oven.

Pour ½ cup of wine into pan to deglaze, scraping up the browned bits as the alcohol boils off. Add tomato soup, and as it heats, stir in spices and flavorants, letting the heat bloom the flavors. Bring to a simmer, then add to Dutch oven. Fill soup cans with water, pour into pan and bring to a boil, once again scraping up the cooked on bits. Pour into Dutch oven. Cook chili in Dutch oven on stove over medium-low heat or put into preheated oven or turn on crockpot.

Simmer chili at least 2 hours on the stove or as long as overnight in a crockpot or oven, allowing the meat to absorb the flavors. (It should still be quite saucy.) If desired, when removed from heat make a slurry of the masa harina flour in cold water, then stir into chili to thicken it.

Serve with a nice sliced rye bread to dip up sauce, with or without butter, and if you'd like topped with grated cheddar cheese and/or sour cream or plain Greek yoghurt. Offer a hot pepper sauce for those who prefer it hotter.

This is nice with a good strong Beaujolais Nouveau or Chianti, or beer.

Homemade Chili Powder
Toast together in a dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant, let cool, then grind to a powder:

5 Tbsp ground mild chili peppers, eg. ancho chilis
2 Tbsp dried oregano
1 ½ Tbsp cumin
½ tsp. red pepper flakes

20200511 08:46 Skidmark Sorry Deacon, I don't get the pun.
20200510 19:05 Deacon Blues In general, the number zero did not have its own Roman numeral, but the concept of zero as a number was known by medieval computists (responsible for calculating the date of Easter). They included zero (via the Latin word nullus meaning none) as one of nineteen epacts, or the age of the moon on March 22. The first three epacts were nullae, xi, and xxii (written in minuscule or lower case). The first known computist to use zero was Dionysius Exiguus in 525. Only one instance of a Roman numeral for zero is known. About 725, Bede or one of his colleagues used the letter N, the initial of nullae, in a table of epacts, all written in Roman numerals.
