Al-Shabaab suffers series of blows in Somalia
[Garowe] Al-Shabaab suffered yet another blow in the latest operation by the Somali National Army [SNA] within Middle Shabelle.

Somali National Army reported that it neutralized Al-Shabaab militants within Hawadley in Middle Shabelle following intensive fighting which left several militants dead and others critically injured. The fighting lasted for several hours.

According to the state media, 17 militants were killed on the site while 150 others were injured as the army with the help of local militia managed to liberate the village which has been under the control of Al-Shabaab, who are in charge of several towns in rural central and southern Somalia.

Elite National Intelligence Security Agency [NISA] team also participated in the operation, as the country continues with the mobilization of both security forces and regional militia to help counter the militants. The strategy has yielded fruits, the government said.

"Over 150 Al-Shabab terrorists including ringleaders neutralized in the latest operations conducted by SNA and locals, per Information Ministry, adding 17 of them were killed in an operation carried out last night by NISA and global partners in Hawadley area of Middle Shabelle province," read the statement.

It is not just in Middle Shabelle, the operations have been going on in Hiiraan, Galgaduud, and Bay regions where the militants have suffered huge setbacks. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud insisted he will use all resources available to degrade the militants.

The president, whose strategy has been praised by stakeholders, also noted that Al-Shabaab will be fought both militarily and ideologically. The business owners have been warned against giving Al-Shabaab money either willingly or through extortion.

On Wednesday, Somali National Army Chief Gen. Odawa Yusuf Rage received military officials from the US who are on duty in Somalia. They discussed a range of topics including strengthening cooperation between the two armies and the ongoing military operations against terrorists.

The US has been a key partner in the fight against Al-Shabaab with the latest airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab killing two militants in Buloburde. America, besides training and equipping Danab Special forces, has been integral in supporting the army through aerial bombardments.

2 more Rohingya killed by armed groups in Bangladesh camps
[BenarNews] Two Rohingya were shot full of holes inside their camp in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday, in the third such killing in the past two days by suspected supporters of the ARSA Death Eater group, according to Rohingya community leaders.

As many as 40 Rohingya have been slain since the start of 2022 by gangs in the sprawling camps near Bangladesh’s southeastern border with Myanmar, police records show.

Armed men entered Camp 17 in Ukhia early Thursday and rubbed out Md. Yasin, 30, and Ayatullah, 40, said Additional Deputy Inspector General Syed Harunur Rashid, the captain of the Armed Police Battalion in Cox’s Bazar.

The brothers of both the slain men also confirmed the killings.

Yasin was killed because he had provided information to the police about men who had cut off his hand and a foot two months ago, said one of his brothers, Md. Hosson.

"For this, they targeted and killed my brother Yasin," Hosson told BenarNews.

"They tried to catch me, but I fled."

Hosson did not give details about the incident two months ago.

Ayatullah was sleeping when men in ski masks came into his room and shot him, said his brother, Salamatullah.

Md. Faruk Ahmed, an assistant superintendent at the Cox’s Bazar police battalion, which oversees security at the camps, said Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) bandidos Death Eaters were behind most of these killings.

"The ARSA bandidos Death Eaters are mainly responsible for the murders at the camps," he told BenarNews.

"We have been trying to eliminate them."

According to the police, at least nine Rohingya, including a child and two camp leaders, were killed by ARSA in October.

ARSA, formerly known as al-Yaaqin, is the Rohingya hard boy group that launched coordinated deadly attacks on Burmese government military and police outposts in Rakhine in August 2017. The raids provoked a brutal Burmese military crackdown that forced close to three-quarters of a million people to seek shelter in Bangladesh.

For years since the 2017 exodus into Cox’s Bazar, Bangladeshi government officials denied that ARSA had a foothold or presence in the sprawling camps, which house about 1 million refugees.

The killings have terrified the Rohingya refugees.

"We are not sure who would be the next target. We are in constant fear," Master Shafiullah, a leader of the Balukhali Camp 9, told BenarNews.

Others living in the area are also running scared.

"Target killings are taking place inside the camps. We the local people have been terrified and helpless," Ayachhur Rahman, a civil society group promoting the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, told BenarNews.

"Those involved in vigilance of camps at night and those providing the police with information about the bandidos Death Eaters are the victims of murders," he said, urging the government to take tougher action against such elements.

Night-time guards were introduced at the camps in October following the September 2021 killing of Rohingya leader Muhib Ullah, who had drawn international attention to the refugees’ plight and visited the White House in Washington.

In a report issued in June, Bangladesh police alleged that ARSA leader Ataullah Abu Ahmmar Jununi had ordered Muhib Ullah assassinated because he was popular.

ROHINGYA REPATRIATION
Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter wished he had a cup of coffee. Even instant would do...
the chairman of a parliamentary watchdog on foreign affairs alleged on Thursday that ARSA was working hand-in-glove with the Myanmar army.

"[A]RSA has been working in favor of the Myanmar army," Faruk Khan told BenarNews, after a briefing by foreign ministry officials on the progress of Rohingya repatriation and the law and order situation at the camps.

"They have been working against the repatriation of the Rohingya in Rakhine state. They are killing the pro-repatriation people," Khan said.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
he did not elaborate on what he meant by the allegation and he did not provide evidence when BenarNews asked him about this.

"The Rohingya people have been getting involved in criminal activities as they have been frustrated over their future. Their repatriation is the only sustainable solution," Khan further said.

"The foreign ministry officials have told us that the Myanmar government now wants to take the Rohingya back. China has [also] been helping us in this regard."

Turkey launches operation pursuing PKK members in Dersim
[Rudaw] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
on Thursday said it launched an operation targeting members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the country's eastern Kurdish province of Dersim (Tunceli) involving hundreds of security personnel, state media reported.

The operation seeks to remove PKK members from the Mercan Mountains in the countryside of Dersim province and involves ground forces of 548 members of both the Ottoman Turkish army and the police, Turkey's state-owned Anadolu Agency cited the interior ministry as saying.

The operation is an extension of the "Eren Blockade" autumn winter operation, which was launched by Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu in early October with the goal of eliminating the PKK from the countryside.

Ankara's cross-border offensives against the PKK have been repeatedly condemned by Iraqi officials, who label them as a "hostile" and "provocative" violation of the country's illusory sovereignty. The assaults have also led to civilian casualties who are often caught in the crossfire, despite Ankara's denial.

On Thursday, Turkey's defense ministry said that a soldier was killed by the PKK in the Kurdistan Region's Duhok province where an ongoing anti-PKK operation by Ankara is taking place.

Canada arrests woman returning from Syria on terror charges
[Rudaw] Canadian police on Wednesday said they had arrested a woman upon her return to the country after five years in the custody of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for suspected ties to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS).

Oumaima Chouay,
...also known as Umm Salahuddin Al Kanadiya (“the Canadian”) ...
27, was arrested upon her arrival at the Montreal-Trudeau airport the night before and handed several terrorism-related charges, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said, with the charges including "participation in activity of terrorist group" and "leaving Canada to participate in activity of terrorist group."

Chouay left Canada to join ISIS in Syria in 2014 but was captured by the SDF in 2017 as the terror group began losing territory across swathes of Syria, dealing a major blow to their attempts of establishing a so-called caliphate.

Another woman was also arrested after arriving at Montreal airport on Wednesday morning, according to Canadian broadcaster CBC News. Canadian police arrested Kimberly Polman,
...dual American-Canadian, she was born a Mennonite but converted to Islam after being brutally gang raped. She left three adult children behind when she left for Syria, where she hoped to be a nurse. But her promised happily ever after wasn’t, and her Trinidadian husband, “Abu Aymen”, sent her to ISIS prison for being a disobedient wife. After her capture in 2019 she sang like a bird...
50, upon her return to the country but did not lay charges, her lawyer said, adding that authorities are seeking a peace bond.

Her lawyer Lawrence Greenspon argued that Canadian authorities "do not have the same kind of evidence" against Polman as they do Chouay.

Polman traveled to Syria in 2015 to marry an ISIS fighter after meeting him online. She was captured by the SDF and held in Roj camp in northeast Syria (Rojava).

Among the women, two children were also repatriated by Canada,
...apparently Ms Chouay’s daughters...
the foreign ministry said while thanking the Kurdish administration in Rojava for their cooperation and praising them for "providing care for the detained individuals under an extremely difficult security situation and adverse circumstances."

Man who sold gun to Texas synagogue attacker gets 8 years in prison
As we like it: all’s well that ends well. (Yes, of course you see what I did there, dear Reader. I would expect nothing less.)
[IsraelTimes] Ex-felon convicted of possession of semi-automatic pistol later used by Malik Faisal Akram to hold rabbi and 3 others hostage at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville

A man who sold a pistol to a man who used it to hold four hostages inside a Texas synagogue before being fatally shot by the FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
was sentenced Monday to nearly eight years in prison for a federal gun crime, the US Department of Justice said.

Henry "Michael" Dwight Williams,
...when not in prison he enjoyed the dubious pleasures of selling illegal drugs and stolen guns to those who appreciate such things...
33, pleaded guilty in June to being a felon in possession of a firearm, prosecutors said.

Williams sold Malik Faisal Akram
...Brit-Paki known wolf, a member of jihad precurser Tablighi Jamaat and divorced father of six, he came to America specially to get the Joos to rescue Aafia Siddiqui from durance vile, but failed spectacularly — first losing his hostages and then his life. Did we ever learn who took him between the Dallas International Airport and the homeless shelter where he was given shelter and who introduced him to the felon who sold him that gun?
the weapon Arkam used when he entered Congregation Beth Israel in the Dallas-area suburb of Colleyville on January 15 and held the synagogue’s rabbi and three others hostage, according to prosecutors.

Williams, who was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted possession of a controlled substance, sold Akram a semi-automatic pistol on January 13.

Prosecutors said that in plea papers, Williams admitted to possession of that firearm despite his prior conviction.

"This defendant, a convicted felon, had no business carrying — much less buying and selling — firearms," US Attorney Chad Meacham said in a news release.

Prosecutors said Williams confirmed selling Akram the handgun at a Dallas intersection.

Akram, a 44-year-old British citizen, held hostages while demanding the release of a federal prisoner. The standoff ended after more than 10 hours when the synagogue’s rabbi threw a chair at Akram and fled with the other two remaining hostages just as an FBI tactical team was moving in. None of the hostages were maimed.

Williams was arrested just over a week after the standoff.

Palestinians open fire on troops near Nablus as closure on city eased — IDF
[IsraelTimes] One Paleostinian killed and 2 injured as soldiers shoot at two ’suspect’ vehicles following attack, hour after army says it is ending 2-week-old blockade amid Lion’s Den crackdown

Paleostinian button men in a passing car opened fire on Israeli troops near Nablus early Friday morning, Israel’s army said, moments after the military announced it was easing a blockade on the Paleostinian city following gains against a local terror group.

A Paleostinian man was killed and two others were maimed by Israeli fire, the Paleostinian Health Ministry said.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that soldiers in the town of Huwara, just south of Nablus, opened fire on two "suspect" vehicles after a passing car opened fire on troops at an IDF post in the town.

No soldiers were maimed and hits were identified, the army said.

Paleostinian health authorities said Imad Abu Rashid, 47, was killed after being shot by Israeli forces in the head, chest and stomach. Two other maimed Paleostinians were brought to Nablus’s Rafidia Hospital.

The military said soldiers who shot at the cars had been in the area as part of an offensive operation. Troops were searching the area for additional suspects, and a number of backpacks were found at the scene of the incident, according to the IDF.

The attack occurred about an hour after the Israeli military announced it was opening a number of entrances into Nablus, which has been under a tight military cordon since October 12.

"Following a situational assessment... it was decided to change the method of restricting movement in the Nablus area and some entrances into the city will be opened tonight," an IDF spokesperson said in a statement sent shortly after midnight.

It was not immediately clear if the Huwara checkpoint was among those that were reopened.

The decision to ease the blockade on the city came after Israel appeared to make major gains against the Lions Den terror group in recent days. The ad hoc group, which had formed less than two months earlier, had grabbed credit for near-nightly attacks on soldiers and settlements, including a shooting on October 11 that left one soldier dead.

Lion’s Den members have vowed to continue carrying out attacks.

Four killed in Israeli strikes near Damascus, Israel warns Syria over Iran weapons transfers
More on this story from yesterday.
[An Nahar] Four pro-Iranian fighters were killed early Thursday during Israeli strikes on several positions near Damascus, a war monitor said, in the third such attack in less than a week.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syrian territory since civil war broke out there in 2011, targeting government positions as well as allied Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters.

Explosions were heard in the Syrian capital in the night of Wednesday to Thursday, an AFP correspondent reported.

"At around 00:30 am, the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial aggression from the direction of the occupied Paleostinian territories targeting several positions in the vicinity of Damascus," the Syrian defense ministry had said in a statement.

Syria's air defense intercepted several missiles, the ministry added.

It did not provide any details on the targets and said that the strikes caused material damage.

The Israeli strikes targeted "weapons and ammunition depots and bases housing Iranian-backed groups a few kilometres from Damascus International Airport," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

The UK-based war monitor, which relies on a wide network of sources in Syria, later said that four pro-Iran

The report said Maher Assad’s unit "supports Iran in the transfer of strategic weapons and dangerous materials" for Syria and Lebanon.

Additionally, the strikes targeted the headquarters of the "Lebanese legion" of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, involved in transferring arms to Lebanon.

The report did not say how or when the Israeli message had been delivered.

Mahsa Amini protests near sixth week
[Rudaw] Iranian security forces killed a 35-year-old man in the Kurdish city of Mahabad in West Azerbaijan province as nationwide protests over the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini edge close to their sixth week, a human rights

watchdog reported on Wednesday.

Esmail Mawloodi, 35, was killed by Iranian security forces during the ongoing protests in the city of Mahabad, the Gay Paree-based Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) said in a tweet as protests continue across various cities in Iran's western Kurdish regions (Rojhelat).

KHRN added that chant "the martyr does not die" was echoed at Mawloodi's funeral.

Hengaw Organization for Human Rights also reported Mawloodi's death, saying he was rubbed out by direct fire from Iranian regime forces.

Large crowds of people gathered on Wednesday and marched towards Amini's grave marking 40 days since her death in police custody in Tehran despite warnings and measures taken by security forces, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly forcing the Amini family to say that they would not hold an event on the day.

Chants of "Woman, life, freedom", "Death to the dictator" and "Down with traitors" echoed at the burial site in Aichi cemetery in the Kurdish city of Saqqez, Amini's hometown and the origin of the weeks-long nationwide protests. Security forces also reportedly fired tear gas at protesters in Saqqez.

According to Kurdish human rights organizations, at least 40 people have been killed in the Kurdish areas with over 800 maimed and several thousands detained.

Human Rights Organization (IHR), which covers human rights violations across Iran, said on Tuesday that at least 234 people, including 29 children have been killed in the ongoing nationwide protests.

Amini was arrested by Iran's so-called morality police for allegedly wearing the hijab, compulsory in Iran following the 1979 revolution, in an improper manner.
