Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief December 26, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • BOMB BLAST REPORTED IN POLICE DISTRICT 6, KABUL – A blast was reported by multiple news outlets on Sunday evening in the Darul Aman neighborhood of Kabul. One of the outlets quoted sources who said the blast was caused by a magnetic mine that destroyed a vehicle. Taliban authorities claimed there were no casualties reported from the incident but media sources say that some deaths and injuries resulted. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast and no further information was available.

  • US AND UK EMBASSIES WARN CITIZENS OF POTENTIAL THREAT IN PAKISTAN – Both embassies released public announcements that describe an unspecified threat to US and UK nationals in the country. The Marriott Hotel in Islamabad was mentioned by name and Pakistani security forces have elevated the threat level in Islamabad to ‘imminent’ after reviewing the intelligence about the threat.

  • TALIBAN FORCIBLY CLOSE SEVERAL GIRLS’ HOSTELS IN KABUL – A video of Taliban thugs entering a private dormitory for girls/women in Kabul was posted on social media Sunday. The owners of several of the lodging establishments said they were threatened with imprisonment if they did not immediately evict the females from their establishments.

  • POSSIBLE INTERNAL PURGE COMING FOR THE TALIBAN – The all-powerful Ministry of Vice and Virtue has demanded all provincial departments draw up lists of government officials who are in polygamous relationships. A source in the Ministry of the Interior claimed the lists have created a ‘state of fear’ among those loyal to the Taliban.

  • HACKERS REPORTEDLY TARGET THE TALIBAN REGIME – Several social media sites claiming to be affiliated with the Anonymous hacking group have claimed several targeted attacks have been made against the Taliban regime. The group claims to have penetrated the Central Bank as well as gained access to the newly installed security camera system in Kabul. The group has not provided details about the nature of the attacks. However, it is possible that banking services may be disrupted for a time in the country.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Baghlan: A small Taliban force made repeated forays against an NRF emplacement in the Faj region. The NRF commander, Sediq Andrabi reportedly thwarted the attack, and the Talibans retreated to Deh Salah. The engagement was brief. There has been no informaton concerning casualties on either side.

NEXT 24 HOURS
  • POTENTIAL TERROR ATTACK IN ISLAMABAD – The situation in Islamabad may indicate that a terror attack against foreign targets is in the works. There are local reports that a TTP suicide bombing team was captured on Sunday but these reports have yet to be confirmed and it is unclear if this is the only threat American and British diplomats have communicated. Pakistani security forces are out in force in the Red Zone of Islamabad and additional reports suggest they have confirmed the identities of possible terrorists and a search operation is underway.
  • PAKISTAN SECURITY OPERATIONS – With news of additional reinforcements being sent to the Durand Line, there is concern that a cross-border operation targeting the TTP will begin soon. Pakistan had announced potential contingency operations against the TTP soon after the new military chief was sworn into office. According to sources in the Pakistan government, the Bannu uprising has convinced those who had been pleading for a peaceful resolution to the problem are now willing to resort to force. We assess the recent troop deployments are primarily defensive in nature and meant to counter any potential Taliban response to possible air strikes or commando raids.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA TARGETING OPERATION ORDERED BY TALIBAN – As protests to the Taliban’s newest restrictive decrees are being put down in cities across Afghanistan, activists have taken to social media in an effort to have their voices heard. In response, the Ministry of the Interior has called in additional analysts to assist with online targeting operations to identify people who may show sympathy to the plight of women. Two similar operations were launched over the course of 2022 and resulted in the arrests of several activists who had failed to conceal their identities. We encourage at-risk Afghans to refrain from publicly supporting the online campaigns if they have not successfully secured their identities/locations/communications information.

Notes on the Pakistan border: 1. Local sources say that additional artillery units (4 regiments) have been deployed along the Durand line. The artillery units deployed to Kurram, Bajaur, Shawal, and Chaman.

2. Locals living along the border with Afghanistan have reported an uptick in the number of drones flying along the border over the last three days.

Arabia
Egyptian military forces reported seizing Yemeni island
by Emad Almarshahi

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] The Yemeni activist, “Sarmad Badil”, on Sunday posted on his Twitter account a picture of an Egyptian military unit, which was deployed on the strategic Yemeni island of Mayon, located in the heart of the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The activist said in a tweet, “Egyptian military forces deployed on the Yemeni island of Mayon, the heart of Bab al-Mandab. You entered the danger zone, so do not blame anyone but yourselves. Sleeping in our yards is forbidden.”

The “Arabi 21” website quoted a military source as saying, “The Egyptian unit appears to be the vanguard of a military presence, the first in Yemeni territory, on Mayon Island, which mediates the Bab al-Mandab Strait, in the Red Sea.”

This comes, days after the Egyptian forces assumed command of the Joint Task Force (153) in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and the Gulf of Aden, which includes: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan, and the United States of America.

The Egyptian military unit has built a radar system and communication devices for the Joint Maritime Forces – which took command in mid-December – on the Yemeni island located in one of the world’s important sea passage points for both energy shipments and commercial goods.

In the middle of this month, the Egyptian army announced in a statement that it assumed command of the Joint Task Force (153) in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and the Gulf of Aden, claiming that these tasks come due to terrorist activities in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden, according to his words.

Activist abducted in Socotra archipelago
by Emad Almarshahi

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militia on Sunday kidnapped the media activist in the Socotra archipelago, Omar Al-Sabrahi.

Local media sources reported that the STC militia in Socotra abducted Al-Sabrahi after he criticized the STC and the UAE.

The activist, Al-Sabrahi, criticized head of the “STC” branch in Socotra, who was appointed as its governor, after his permanent failure to manage the province.

It is worth noting that human rights organizations have accused the STC militia of launching kidnapping campaigns in Socotra against many opponents.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a clearance operation was underway in Kahan after an bomb targeted security forces.

The military’s media wing said that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off close to the leading party of the security forces. Captain Fahad, Lance Naik Imtiaz and sepoys Asghar, Mehran and Shamoon were martyred in the blast.

The statement further said that the sanitisation operation continued in the area to apprehend the suspects involved in the attack.

In another statement, the ISPR said that an operation against Lions of Islam in the Sambaza area of Zhob left one security man martyred. One terrorist was killed, while two personnel were maimed.

ISPR said the forces had started an operation in Sambaza on the basis of intelligence reports to deny Lions of Islam the use of suspected routes to move across the "Pakistain-Afghanistan border
...also known as Pashtunistan, home of ignorance, poverty, and automatic weapons...
to sneak into KP along the interprovincial boundary and target citizens and security forces".

A group of the murderous Moslems was intercepted in the early hours of Sunday, it said, adding, "during the establishing of blocking positions to deny them escape routes, murderous Moslems opened fire on the security forces".

As a result of a shootout, one terrorist was killed while Sepoy Haq Nawaz embraced martyrdom and two other soldiers got injured.

"The murderous Moslems were supported by their controllers from across the border as well through firing," the statement added.

The maimed were identified as Muhammad Qayyum, 25; Zubair Ahmed, 25; Kaynat Bibi, 17; and Bibi Ewa, 13. They were moved to Civil Hospital.

Police said that the grenade blast took place near Amir Dasti cop shoppe. Officials said that unknown people hurled the grenade and escaped. Police added that an improvised bomb recovered from the area was defused.

In a grenade attack on a police check-post in Satellite Town, at least eight people, including three police officials, received injuries.

"We have received 12 injured [including four injured in the Sabzal Road attack] who had been hurt due to splinters of the hand grenades," Dr Wasim Baig, front man of the Provincial Sandeman Civil Hospital told Dawn.

Another attack in Quetta targeted an FC post on Sariab Road. Police said unknown motorcyclists hurled a grenade that went kaboom! some distance from the check post. "No casualty was reported in the blast," they added.

"Resultantly, Captain Fahad along with four other brave sons of soil, Lance Naik Imtiaz, Sepoy Asghar, Sepoy Mehran and Sepoy Shamoon, have embraced martyrdom, laying their lives in defence of the motherland against an externally perpetrated threat of terrorism," the blurb reads.

The responsibility for the attack was claimed by the banned murderous Moslem Balochistan

Liberation Army (BLA) group. The BLA is a rebel group operating against the Pak state in Balochistan. BLA’s stated aim is complete independence for Balochistan.

Earlier in the day, the ISPR said a terrorist was killed and a soldier martyred during an exchange of fire between holy warriors and security forces in an intelligence-based operation in the Sambaza area of Balochistan’s Zhob district.

According to a statement issued by the ISPR on Sunday morning, the operation, launched on the basis of "credible information", was continuing for the last 96 hours.

The objective was to "deny holy warriors the use of few suspected routes to move across the Pakistain-Afghanistan border
...also known as Pashtunistan, home of ignorance, poverty, and automatic weapons...
to sneak into KP (Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa) along the interprovincial boundary and target citizens and security forces", the ISPR added.

As a result of the continuous surveillance and sanitation of the area, a group of holy warriors was intercepted in the early hours of Sunday, the ISPR said, adding that "during the establishment of blocking positions to deny the holy warriors escape routes, the holy warriors opened fire on the security forces".

In the ensuing exchange of fire, a terrorist was killed while Sepoy Haq Nawaz was martyred. Two soldiers sustained were maimed in the shootout, the ISPR statement said.

It added that the holy warriors were supported by their controllers from across the border as well through firing.

Hezbollah said to hand over suspect in killing of Irish UNIFIL soldier
[IsraelTimes] Main shooter’ arrested and terror group cooperating with probe, Lebanese official says; unclear if person accused in December 14 killing of UN peacemaker is a Hezbollah member
They handed over the shooter, but not the spotter/handler who was in the car with him?

’s Hezbollah terror group has handed over a man suspected of killing an Irish United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
peacekeeper earlier this month, a security official told AFP on Sunday.

Private Sean Rooney, 23, was killed and three others injured on December 14 when their UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) vehicle was attacked near the village of al-Aqbiya in the country’s south, a stronghold of the Iranian proxy.

UNIFIL acts as a buffer between Lebanon and Israel and operates near the border.

"The main shooter has been arrested by security forces after Hezbollah handed him over hours ago," the security official said, declining to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

It was not immediately clear if the individual arrested was a member of the group.

Hezbollah is cooperating in the probe led by Lebanese military intelligence, the official said, adding that "preliminary investigations are nearly complete."

Earlier this week, a judicial official told AFP that Lebanese Sherlocks had identified suspects in the attack, adding that there were "at least two" shooters.

A car carrying gunnies followed the UNIFIL vehicle, the judicial source had said, citing preliminary findings and calling the attack "premeditated."

Hezbollah has repeatedly denied involvement in the incident, and its security chief Wafic Safa has described the killing as "unintentional."

Witnesses said villagers in the al-Aqbiya area blocked Rooney’s vehicle after it took a road along the Mediterranean coast not normally used by UNIFIL.

Al-Aqbiya is just outside UNIFIL’s area of operations, the force has said.

The three passengers were maimed when the vehicle hit a pylon and overturned.

Over the years, there have been a number of incidents between Hezbollah operatives and UN peacekeepers, but they have rarely escalated.

UNIFIL has demanded a "speedy" investigation into the attack, the motives of which remain unclear.

It is the first death of a UNIFIL member in a violent mostly peaceful incident in Lebanon since January 2015, when a Spanish peacekeeper was killed by Israeli fire during an armed clash between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.

UNIFIL was set up in 1978 to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces after they invaded southern Lebanon in reprisal for a Paleostinian terror attack launched from the area. The force is composed of nearly 10,000 soldiers.

Israel withdrew from south Lebanon in 2000, but fought a devastating 2006 war with Hezbollah and its allies.

Lebanon and Israel remain technically at war.
Update from An Nahar at 4:30 p.m. ET:
Media reports said the arrested man is not a member of the group but rather a 31-year-old supporter.

Gunmen fire at Israeli car, troops in W. Bank; cars burned in Palestinian village
[IsraelTimes] No reports of injuries in any of the incidents in the Nablus area overnight

Paleostinian button men shot up an Israeli car and at military forces in two separate incidents in the northern West Bank Sunday night, the army and Paleostinians said.

There were no casualties in either shooting.

In one case, the military said button men shot up an Israeli vehicle near the Havat Gilad outpost. Troops searched the area and found several bullet casings. The Nablus-based, loosely organized terror group known as Lion’s Den grabbed credit for the shooting in a statement.

In the second, the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group (PIJ) claimed to have fired at a military checkpoint near Nablus. There was no immediate comment from the army.

Channel 12 news reported that later in the night, Paleostinian vehicles were set alight in the village of Burin near Nablus, possibly by Death Eater settlers. There was no immediate comment from the police.

On Friday Paleostinian button men fired shots toward the settlement of Shaked, west of the Paleostinian city of Jenin. Slight damage was caused to a home but no one was injured.

A local wing of PIJ grabbed credit for the attack. The settlement has recently been targeted several times.

Boat with ‘dehydrated and exhausted’ Rohingya refugees lands in Aceh
[BenarNews] Dozens of "dehydrated and exhausted" Rohingya refugees — all males — landed on the coast of Aceh Besar regency in Indonesia on Christmas Sunday after being at sea for about a month, local officials said.

The FB Tarikul Islam 2, the boat carrying the 57 men, sprang a leak and its engine broke down, Aceh provincial police front man Winardy said. The wooden boat came ashore at Indra Patra beach in Ladong, a village in Aceh Besar.

"They were forced to land and rest in Ladong because the boat’s hull was leaking and they ran out of food," Winardy told BenarNews.
