#2  From German wikipedia:

Prinzessin Margarete Karola Wilhelmine Viktoria Adelheid Albertine Petrusa Bertram Paula, Herzogin von Sachsen (24. Januar 1900 - 16.

Kinda interesting. She does look a bit severe but coming of age in Germany at that time might do that to a girl.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 5, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • RAID ON ISIS-K FACILITY IN POLICE DISTRICT 8 – Taliban security forces launched a raid on a reputed ISIS-K safehouse at approximately 1600hrs local yesterday. Gunfire and explosions were heard in the city and the fighting lasted approximately 3 hours. Taliban officials claimed to have killed 6-7 male ISIS-K terrorists and arrested 2-4 female ISIS-K members. In a separate operation, Taliban officials claim to have arrested 2 additional ISIS-K members in Nimroz Province.

  • IDENTITY OF KIDNAPPERS KILLED IN PLOT TO RANSOM BUSINESSMAN QUESTIONED – As previously reported, the identity cards found on the four men who attempted to kidnap a Kabul businessman indicated they were Taliban security personnel. One is reputed to have been the brother of a District Governor in Kabul. At least two of the dead kidnappers worked for the Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry is claiming to have launched an investigation. A source in the Police said the Interior Ministry rebuked those who had allowed the photos of the dead kidnapper’s ID cards to be released. The source believed nothing would come of any investigation and claimed these incidents happen quite frequently.
No, Reeeeally? Just like Mexican Police/Federales
  • US DISCUSSING CONSEQUENCES FOR TALIBAN WITH ALLIES – The US Government announced that it was in consultations with several international allies about what actions will be taken against the Taliban regime over the restrictions placed on women. While the US had initially condemned the Taliban’s decisions and made strong statements about eventual consequences, nothing had been publicly announced. It seems that Washington is now going to act and has the difficult job of striking a balance between punitive measures and the ability to continue humanitarian aid.

  • JOURNALIST RELEASED FROM DETENTION – Faizullah Faizbakhsh, a freelance journalist who had been imprisoned with an American journalist for filming the site of the US drone strike that killed the Al-Qaeda leader was released yesterday. One of the conditions of his release was a signed statement pledging loyalty to the Taliban regime.

  • TALIBAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS TELLS FAMILIES OF AFGHANS DETAINED IN KARACHI NOT TO PAY FOR THEIR RELEASE – The Taliban MFA released a statement on Tuesday that warns family and friends of those currently being detained in Pakistan’s Sindh Province not to pay any fees for their release. The statement said any costs associated with their detention would be mitigated by the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kabul: Taliban security forces raided a home in the 8th police district where suspected ISIS-K terrorists were hiding out, 6-7 ISIS-K terrorists were killed and another 4 were captured.
Khost: An unconfirmed report stated that drones targeted an unidentified military center in the province during the night, causing several casualties. While the source for the information claimed the drones were operated by the ALM, we have had no reports of any Resistance group owning/operating weaponized drones since the Taliban took power, If the attack occurred at all, it seems more likely the drones belonged to Pakistan.

NEXT 24 HOURS
POSSIBILITY FOR ADDITIONAL CLEARING OPERATIONS AFTER ISIS-K FIGHT – In previous instances where an ISIS-K facility was raided, intelligence collected from the site initiated raids on other ISIS-K locations. In at least three of these instances, the subsequent action took place within 48 hours of the raid. At-risk Afghans should be cautious of large concentrations of security forces and pay particular attention to security vehicles staging in convoys along roads. These are typically indicators that an action is in the works.

Double car bomb explosions rock central Somali town
[ShabelleMedia] Two explosions that were carried out by al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
using two cars loaded with explosives targeted Mahas town in central Somalia on Wednesday morning.

One of the earth-shattering kabooms took place in front of a house, where officials and MPs from the government were staying. A second explosion took place in the same vicinity.

At least 15 have been killed and injured in the morning explosions.

Dozens of people, including a journalist were maimed and have been taken to the general hospital of Mahas district as the doctors of the hospital told the Shabelle Media Network.

Mumin Mohammed Halane, the commissioner of Mahas said two boom-mobiles came from the Wabho area in the Galgadud region, where al-Shabaab has been battling against the SNA.

Al-Shabaab has grabbed credit for the bombings which were aimed to kill politicians and military commanders leading the ongoing operations against the krazed killers.

The Somali government is yet to comment on the attack which comes days after president Hassan Sheikh said this year will be the end of the al-Shabaab era in the country.

The al-Qaeda-linked group has been waging an insurgency for 15 years with the aim to oust the UN-backed government in Mogadishu which is protected by AU troops.

The army drove al-Shabaab out of dozens of villages in central Somalia — Hiran, Galgadud, and the Middle Shabelle region in August 2022.

Witnesses said the blasts occurred near a restaurant not far from a district administration building in Mahas.

Al-Shabaab kidnaps more locals in Somalia
[Garowe] The al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
gunnies continued to wreak havoc in the country through the latest tactic of abducting locals after losing strategic towns in the country following clan mobilization which has successfully made them flee from most parts of the Horn of Africa nation.

On Monday, the gunnies reportedly kidnapped dozens of people in Beerhana and Dhoqor villages about 30 kilometers south of Beledweyne town within the Hiiraan region. This was the second time the gunnies were abducting innocent civilians within a week in Somalia.

Locals said the gunnies kidnapped about 20 farmers from Hawadale clan and crossed with them over River Shabelle. The gunnies have been targeting farmers who are important in food production within the country which is struggling with drought and possible famine.

Last week, reports indicate, the gunnies kidnapped nine people in Halgan District after ambushing them in the vehicle in which they were traveling in. They crossed over with the people in Shabelle River to Western Hiiraan where they are in full control.

Although the motive behind the latest strategy is not known, the gunnies have been revenging against Macawisley militia who have been mobilizing against their dominance. The clan militia together with the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia and US Africa Command have managed to liberate several towns.

In most cases, the al-Shabaab uses those kidnapped for extortion purposes as they look for money to fund their illegal activities in the country. The families of abductees are forced to pay some fee in the exchange for freedom and the practice has been going on for quite some time.

Al-Shabaab controls large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia but has lost key areas in the last four months following the operation to flush them by security forces.

Arabia
Two Yemeni Civilians Killed in 2023 Already Due to Leftover Mines
by Emad Almarshahi

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] The Executive Center for Mine Action on Tuesday confirmed in a statistic for the first days of the new year 2023 that the remnants of Saudi-led war continue to claim the lives of civilians, children and women.

The center stated that since the beginning of the 2023, two citizens were killed and three injured, including children, in a number of governorates as a result of remnants of the war.

It noted that the threat of remnants of war continues to await new victims as a result of widespread contamination, excessive use of cluster bombs and the lack of landmine detectors.

These tragedies came in light of international silence about the crime of the US-Saudi aggression by preventing the entry of mine detectors, which represents an obstruction of humanitarian work, and deliberate harm to the largest number of Yemenis.

Pakistani militants claim killing of two intelligence officials
Follow up to this story from yesterday.

Pakistani militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban on Wednesday claimed the killing of a senior official of Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency and another officer, the latest in a resurgence of extremist violence shaking the country.

For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officers were shot dead outside a hotel in Punjab province on Tuesday, police said.

The TTP, an umbrella group of militants that associates itself with Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban, ended a months-old ceasefire with the Pakistani government last year and launched a spate of attacks across the country.

“Yesterday, a secret squad of TTP killed ISI Deputy Director Multan Naveed Sadiq along with his colleague Inspector Nasir Butt at Bismillah Highway in Khanewal District of Punjab,” TTP spokesman Muhammad Khorasani said in a statement to media.

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), in a statement on Wednesday, confirmed the killings but not the TTP’s role. It said the two officers had met the suspected killer at the hotel and had a cup of tea with him.

After tea, the suspect shot the two officers in the hotel parking lot and fled on a motorcycle, the CTD added, releasing security camera footage of the incident.

The incident occurred a day after Pakistan’s top civilian and military leaders pledged to use “full force” to deal with militants.

In recent weeks TTP attacks have included a suicide bombing in the capital Islamabad that failed to hit its target.

Pakistani authorities have said the TTP is operating out of neighboring Afghanistan - an accusation that the Taliban administration has denied.

On Tuesday, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s Taliban administration, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the Pakistani accusations were “baseless” and “provocative”.

He said the Taliban administration was doing its best not to let anyone use Afghan territory for attacks in other countries.

Palestinian attempts to snatch soldier’s gun during West Bank raid, IDF says
[IsraelTimes] Military says soldier lightly hurt in Qabatiya incident; one Paleostinian shot, condition unclear; troops detain 12 suspects during operations.

A Paleostinian attempted to snatch a soldier’s gun during an overnight arrest raid in the northern West Bank city of Qabatiya, the military said on Wednesday morning.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, during the arrest of three wanted Paleostinians in the city, south of Jenin, troops came under gunfire by button men, and returned fire at them.

Then, one suspect approached the troops and attempted to snatch his gun, the IDF said. "In response, the force at the scene shot at him," the military said, adding that the suspect was hit.

Paleostinian media reports said one person was taken to a hospital in Jenin after being shot. His condition was not immediately clear.

The IDF said one soldier was lightly hurt in the incident in Qabatiya, and was taken to a hospital in Israel for further treatment.

Footage published by Paleostinian media outlets also showed an bomb being detonated near a convoy of IDF vehicles in the city.

Separately, the IDF said troops arrested nine more wanted Paleostinians and seized several firearms in overnight raids across the West Bank, with violent mostly peaceful incidents in some areas.

In all, 12 suspects were taken to be questioned by the Shin Bet security agency.
