Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 9, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • WHO IS KILLING FORMER MEMBERS OF THE PASSPORT DIRECTORATE – A former employee of the Directorate was killed by unidentified gunmen in Farah Province on Saturday. His death marks the 6th former or current Directorate employee to have been murdered in Afghanistan over the past ten days. Only 2 of the murders have been reported on in the press while the other 4 were reported by sources from two separate ministries. A source with the police said the men may have been targeted for participating in a conspiracy to sell several hundred passports to desperate Afghans which were never delivered. The source said they had no leads on the identities of those who may be responsible for the killings but suggested it is likely a centralized program, due to the time span of the killings. Several high-profile former Afghan leaders were reputedly bilked in the scam and may have hired an armed criminal group to exact revenge.

  • CENTRAL BANK SAYS REPORTS THAT CASH AID HAS BEEN HALTED ARE NOT TRUE – Responding to several international media reports which stated the US and others had suspended the cash delivery of economic aid to Afghanistan, leaders of the Da Afghanistan Bank said the reports are false. They called on the media to verify such reports in the future as false reporting has a negative impact on the valuation of the Afghani. It is not clear if the aid shipments had resumed but many analysts are expecting disruption to begin as part of a US-led economic sanction package in retaliation for the recent gender decrees from Kandahar. Shah Mehrabi, a former member of the Bank’s supreme council told TOLO News on Sunday that aid shipments had been halted in mid-December. The situation remains unclear.

  • PAKISTAN PLANNING ON DEPORTING THE AFGHANS FREED FROM THE PRISONS IN SINDH PROVINCE – Over 500 recently released Afghans in Sindh Province are expected to face deportation in the next two weeks. Pakistan chose to release the detained subjects after an outcry from several international organizations over the conditions the Afghans were subjected to while in confinement. It is thought that several hundred remain confined and await decisions on their cases.

  • TURKISH AUTHORITIES ARREST 2 ISIS OPERATIVES FOR PLOTTING A TERROR ATTACK IN ISTANBUL – The men were captured on December 31 but little was said about the operation until yesterday when Turkish authorities announced the men were ISIS operatives and one had come from Tajikistan, the other hailed from Uzbekistan. The Tajik national was detained and is reputedly an explosives expert while the Uzbek will be deported. A media outlet that claimed access to the investigation said the militants were receiving their instructions from Afghanistan.

  • HEAVY SNOW AND RAIN HAS DISRUPTED GROUND TRANSPORT – A major storm system brought rain and snow to roughly half the Provinces in the country and closed several roads. It is believed that hundreds of motorists have been stranded in separate locations. The Salang Pass was closed to truck traffic.

POSSIBLE SECURITY OPERATION IN BAGHLAN – Unconfirmed reports of an arrest of a senior Baghlan Resistance Commander in Sar-e-Pul Province have sparked fears that a security operation was ramping up and focused on Resistance forces in Baghlan Province. Detachments of GDI agents were said to be traveling to the Province to reinforce the local GDI offices. The identity of the Commander has not yet been revealed but a source in the Ministry of the Interior claimed that his phone was captured intact and contained a wealth of information about the Resistance in the Province. No further information was provided. At-risk Afghans in Baghlan should be prepared for potential conflict in the coming days and are advised to avoid sudden Taliban concentrations of vehicles and/or fighters.

Soldiers arrested over role in Al-Shabaab attack in Somalia
[Garowe] Several soldiers have been arrested in line with the al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
attack which targeted Villa Rays Hotel in Mogadishu on November 28, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has confirmed, in what could expose cracks within the security sector of the country.

In an interview with the Somali National Television on Friday, Hamza Abdi Barre said most of the soldiers who were manning the busy and highly fortified route towards the hotel near Villa Somalia have been arrested following preliminary investigations that linked them to the attack.

"We promised that authorities would carry out a real investigation. There is no doubt among the citizenry that the government is working to uncover all the details. We have decided that the [al-Shabaab] murderous Moslems are not with us. Don't live among these men," said Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

In December last year, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud vowed to ensure culprits are brought to book, arguing that the soldiers would have been more alert given that the attack was conducted near Villa Somalia, a highly guarded presidential residence when he was ushering in investors.

For over 20 hours, security forces were involved in shootouts with the al-Shabaab murderous Moslems who had taken over the strategic floor within the Villa Rays Hotel. It took the intervention of elite Danab Special forces to end the siege which attracted international condemnation.

Witnesses said the attack started with a jacket wallah driving in a vehicle entering the hotel before al-Shabaab fighters followed the vehicle. More than 20 civilians were brutally killed in a facility that was frequented by senior government officials.

Hamza Abdi Barre also lauded the significant gains made in the war against al-Shabaab murderous Moslems within central and southern Somalia, which has seen the group lose various strategic towns which are key in the ongoing liberation of the country from the al-Qaeda-linked group.

"We have developed a strategy to provide healthcare, water, education, justice, and other services to the areas liberated from al-Shabaab. The police have been deployed in Aden Yabal, and intelligence forces are being prepared. As we take them back from al-Shabaab, we will also deploy police and intelligence forces in other areas," he said.

The country has been working closely with US Africa Command, the African Union

Transition Mission in Somalia, and local militia, who have made it possible for some regions to be liberated. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared full war against al-Shabaab Death Eaters.

NGOs resume ‘rescue’ operations, pick up 110 Migrants off Libyan Coast
[LibyaReview] The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) search and rescue vessel, Geo Barents announced that it had rescued 73 migrants colonists, including 16 unaccompanied minors.

In a statement on Sunday, the NGO said that the migrants colonists were traveling in an unstable and overcrowded inflatable boat off the coast of Libya.

"The survivors are doing well, and are being cared for by the MSF medical team on board," it added.

Earlier today, the Ocean Viking belonging to the SOS Méditerranée organization, rescued 37 people. It was sent to the Adriatic port of Ancona, for about four days, by the Italian authorities. It is expected that the same will happen to MSF, despite worsening weather conditions in the coming days.

Both ships resumed operations in the central Mediterranean on Wednesday. These were the first to do so since tough new measures for rescuing NGO’s were approved by Italia’s far-right government of Giorgia Meloni.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that 24,684 migrants colonists were intercepted in the Mediterranean, and returned to Libya in 2022.

According to Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, the IOM stated that the number of migrants colonists witnessed a decrease of 24% in 2021, at 32,425 migrants colonists.

The UN body confirmed that it recorded 1,373 drowned or missing persons, during the past year. It announced that the Libyan Coast Guard had rescued 633 migrants colonists off the coast of Libya, and returned them from 27 November to 3 December 2022.

It has also confirmed that it has "helped repatriate 60,000 migrants colonists from Libya to their home countries over the past seven years, in a safe and dignified manner, through the Voluntary Humanitarian Return Program."

The IOM described this voluntary program, which has been in operation since 2015, as "a crucial lifeline for stranded migrants colonists from 46 different countries across Africa and Asia, who want to return home and rebuild their lives."

Notably, the IOM announced that 1,088 migrants colonists were intercepted and returned to Libya, from 25-31 December 2022.

The UN organization also added that the Libyan eastern authorities intercepted at sea 3,404 people and returned them to Libya in the last five weeks of 2022.

Libyan Army Intercepts 360 Migrants
[LibyaReview] On Sunday, the 128th Enhanced Brigade of the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced that it had stopped 360 migrants colonists from crossing the Mediterranean, via the coast of Sirte.

In a statement, the LNA-affiliated brigade indicated that they handed the migrants colonists over to the Directorate for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM), along with their belongings, money, mobile phones, and passports.

Libya is a key departure point for migrants colonists seeking to reach European shores, often in poorly-maintained vessels.

The Italian news agency, Nova reported that LNA Naval forces, in the east of the country, intercepted and returned around 3,400 migrants colonists in the last five weeks.

"This is significant progress in combating human trafficking along the eastern Libyan route, from Cyrenaica towards Europe," Nova said in its report.

Sources from the Ministry of the Interior said that "more than 30,000 migrants colonists from Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and about 18,000 from Cyrenaica arrived in Italia in 2022."

The last operation took place on Friday, 30 December, off the eastern coast of Libya. Naval units intercepted a boat with between 600-700 people aboard. In a statement, the Libyan Coast Guard said that it was one of the largest interceptions of migrants colonists seeking to reach Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
via Libya.

It noted that the boat was stopped close to the Mediterranean town of Moura, 90 kilometers (56 miles) west of Benghazi.

The Libyan Coast Guard posted images showing a large, overcrowded vessel with most of those on board appearing to be young people.

Previously, the same naval forces had reported, on 26 December, another 500 migrants colonists intercepted at the sea.

According to the Libyan office of the IOM, eastern authorities intercepted at sea 3,404 people and returned them to Libya in the last five weeks of 2022.

In August last year, Italian military vessels aided a boat crammed with 539 migrants colonists off the southern island of Lampedusa. The boat was launched from Libyan shores.

Libya has in recent years emerged as the dominant transit point for migrants colonists seeking a better quality of life in Europe. The oil-rich country plunged into chaos following a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
-backed uprising that toppled and killed longtime autocrat Muammar Qadaffy
...The late megalomaniac dictator of Libya, admired everywhere for his garish costumes, funny hats, harem of cutie bodyguards, and incoherent ravings. As far as is known, he is the only person who's ever declared jihad on Switzerland...
in 2011.

Human traffickers in recent years have benefited from the chaos in Libya, smuggling in migrants colonists across the country’s lengthy borders with six nations. The migrants colonists are then packed into ill-equipped rubber boats and other vessels and set off on risky sea voyages.

A Lieutenant Colonel of the Nigerian Army, N.B. Ahmed has been kidnapped following an ambush on a military convoy by button men suspected to be terrorists.

SaharaReporters gathered that the senior military officer was kidnapped along Tsafe (Zamfara)/Funtua (Katsina) road on Friday, January 6.

The kidnapped officer is the new commanding officer of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Sokoto.

"Our new boss who resumed on Friday was attacked while being escorted to Kano. He was taken away by the button men," a military source told SaharaReporters.

A military signal exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters also confirmed the incident.

The signal was however silent on others travelling with Ahmed.

It read, “TEXT: SP SITREP ON KIDNAPPED OF SNR OFFR. LT COL NB AHMED (N/12022). A/N SNR OFFR WAS KIDNAPED ALONG TSAFE/FUNTUA RD ON 06 JAN 23 AT ABOUT 2000HRS WHILE TRAVELING TO KANO FOR WEEKEND. This comes a few days after a female Lieutenant, P. P. Johnson was kidnapped by unknown button men in Imo State.

A trending video in December 2022 showed the female officer being tortured by button men after she was kidnapped while visiting her grandmother in Aku-Okigwe community.

"She was just conferred with the rank of Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army. She passed out on December 17 after being commissioned from the Direct Short Service Course," a military source had said.

"She was kidnapped at her home in Ibube. She travelled home for the Yuletide celebration."

In the clip obtained by SaharaReporters, one of the unknown button men was heard threatening to kill the officer for being a member of the Nigerian Army.

He also warned youths against joining the military and other security agencies.

The officer was stripped naked and her hands and legs were tied. She was seated on the ground in a bushy area.

Kidnappings in Edo and Ondo States, thwarted attempt in Plateau State

Edo Train Station Attack: Nigerian Police Arrest One Suspect, Kidnap Victim Regains Freedom, 31 Others Missing

[SaharaReporters] The Edo State Commissioner for Communications and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare has said that security operatives have arrested one of the suspected kidnappers involved in the abduction of 32 passengers at the Igueben train station, in the Igueben Local Government Area of the state.

The commissioner disclosed this during a press briefing in Benin City, adding that one of the 32 persons who were kidnapped, has beat feet from the kidnappers.

He said: "After 32 persons were kidnapped, the Police, vigilantes, and local hunters swung into action, combing the bushes around the vicinity. One of the kidnapped victims was able to escape."

Nehikhare noted, "The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has visited the scene of the attack for on-the-spot assessment and was told that one of the suspects was arrested and he has been helping the police with the investigation to arrest other fleeing members of the kidnapping gang.

"We congratulate the Police and other security agencies for their swiftness in attending to the security brief. We appreciate the local hunters and members of the Edo State Security Network as their collaboration assisted in this operation. This synergy led to the success recorded in a very short time."

"We hope this is the last time we will have such an attack on government infrastructure, especially train stations here in Edo State. Our security network was swift to react to the incident and we condole the families of victims. We will give necessary support to the security agencies, vigilantes and local hunters who are on the trail of these kidnappers," he added.

Panic As Gunmen Attack Edo Train Station, Abduct Several Passengers

[SaharaReporters] The police in Edo State have confirmed that several passengers were abducted from a train station in the Igueben Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that the gunmen attacked the victims while they were waiting to board a train to Warri in Delta State.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Chidi Nwabuzor, in a statement said it was unclear if anyone was killed in the incident but that some travellers sustained gunshot wounds.

He said the abductors, armed with AK 47s, invaded the train station on Saturday evening and shot sporadically into the air before abducting scores of intending travellers.

He said, “This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that today, 7th of January, 2023 at about 1600hrs, men armed with AK 47 rifles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped an unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri.

“The kidnappers who shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers left some persons with bullet wounds. The Area Commander Irrua, DPO Igueben Division, and men have visited the scene of crime with members of the Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters with a view to protecting the lives and property of the remaining passengers."

“Bush combing operations have commenced in order to rescue the victims and arrest the fleeing kidnappers. Further developments will be communicated,” he added.

Some gunmen in February 2022 killed one person while 10 others were abducted at a Train- Stop Point in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

The incident was said to have occurred around 2 pm.

The gunmen reportedly opened fire on a man simply identified as Dennis, killing him instantly. It was gathered that late Dennis was on his way to pick up his boss from work when he met his untimely death.

Thereafter, the gunmen took their victims to an unknown destination, the majority of whom were residents of the Ajaokuta village and were waiting for the train to arrive at the Stop Point.

Also on March 28, 2022, terrorists attack a Kaduna-bound train, killing some passengers and kidnapping scores of others. The last set of the kidnapped passengers was released in October 2022.

Nigerian Police Arrest Suspected Kidnapper While Withdrawing Ransom Money From POS In Ondo

[SaharaReporters] A suspected kidnapper who abducted a six-year-old girl in her mother's car at a grocery store in Akure, Ondo State's capital, was apprehended while attempting to withdraw a portion of the ransom money.

The suspect had demanded N50 million in exchange for the girl's release.

It was learned that the suspect kidnapped the girl while her mother was out shopping for groceries in her Toyota Corolla in Akure's Lafe Area.

Mrs Chukwu-Ezedima, the girl's mother, reported her daughter's kidnapping on December 21, 2022, at 9.00 p.m., said SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ondo State Command, in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Saturday.

Odunlami-Omisanya stated that the suspect, who allegedly demanded N50 million in ransom from the family, was apprehended on December 31, 2022 at a POS stand while attempting to withdraw a portion of the money.

She did not say whether the ransom was paid in full.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to committing the crime, while the victim was rescued unharmed.

“The suspect will soon be arraigned in court,” the police spokesperson said.

The Nigerian Army, according to the police spokesperson, also turned over a man arrested for illegally possessing firearms to the police.

Odunlami-Omisanya stated that a Nigerian Army patrol conducting a routine check at Elegbeka in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area, received information about a man (names withheld) allegedly in possession of a revolver.

She stated that the patrol team investigated the allegation and arrested the man with the locally manufactured gun.

“The suspect initially claimed he found the gun on a farmland, but later confessed that the gun was given to him by a welder (names withheld) currently in a Correctional Centre in Okene.

“The suspect has been handed over to the Police and would soon have his day in court,” the Police PPRO added.

Kidnappers Storm Residence Of Plateau State House Of Assembly Speaker, Yakubu To Abduct Him For Ransom

[SaharaReporters] Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Plateau State command, on Friday night foiled an attempt by suspected kidnappers to whisk away the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Yakubu Sanda.

This was confirmed by DSP Alfred Alabo, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, narrating that the Speaker was trailed by armed men in an ash-coloured Honda CR-V to his residence at the Federal Low-cost in Jos at about 20 minutes past 11pm but the attempt by the three occupants of the vehicle to enter his house and kidnap him was foiled by the timely response of the police.

He said, “The aggressive fight against crime and criminality has continued to frustrate the evil and dastardly act of men of the underworld in the State through the effective and proactive crime prevention strategies put in place by the chief crime buster of the state, CP Bartholomew Onyeka.

“The strategy designed by the Commissioner of Police has yielded enormous and laudable operational successes in recent times. This time around, it has assisted greatly in foiling a kidnapping attempt on the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Yakubu Sanda.

“On 06/01/2023 at about 2320hrs while the Speaker arrived at his residence at Federal Low-cost in Jos, three unidentified gunmen operating in an Ash colored CR-V Jeep trailed him to his residence and attempted to enter his house to kidnap him but their mission was made impossible by the intrepid police officers on guard duty, and the timely response of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Rantya Division, SP Ayuba Iliya and his men who joined forces with the men on guard duty and repelled the evil act.

Hadhramaut tribes start recruitment campaign to oppose occupation of province
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] The "Hadhramaut Tribes Alliance" on Saturday approved the opening of the recruitment door for 10,000 members from the valley and desert districts of Hadhramaut province to confront threats in all districts.

This move by the tribes alliance aims to block the way for the UAE-funded Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias to control the province.

A statement issued by the tribes alliance during a meeting held in the city of Seiyun confirmed the alliance’s support for the leadership of the "First Military Region" affiliated with the Islah Party, calling for the formation of a brigade to be under the command of the Military Region’s chief of staff," Amer bin Hatian al-Nahdi.

In their statement, the tribes demanded the recruitment of 3,000 members from the valley’s districts within the security services to maintain security and social peace in all districts, and rejected the recruitment or presence of any armed elements from outside Hadhramaut, whatever the pretexts for their presence.

Mukalla airport in Hadhramaut turned into Emirati military base by occupation
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] al-Rayyan airport in the city of Mukalla has turned into a den of foreign conspiracy against the security and stability of the districts of Wadi Hadhramaut and the eastern districts of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
, according to political sources.

Adel al-Hassani, a former detainee in UAE prison and a leader in the so-called "Southern Resistance®", confirmed that mercenaries in the city of Seiyun receive directions from Emirati intelligence officers stationed at al-Rayyan airport, located on the Arabian Sea, eastern Yemen.

Al-Hassani explained, in a tweet, that a meeting brought together the Emirati officers with the leaders of a group of mercenaries inside the airport, to demand the exit of the "First Military Region" forces present in Seiyun.

In April 2016, the UAE forces imposed control over the city of Mukalla, the capital of the Hadhramaut coast, after a year of war on Yemen, under the pretext of confronting the terrorist individuals from al-Qaeda, without any significant confrontations who disappeared within hours from the city. Military observers described this play as farcical.

The UAE forces have turned al-Rayyan airport, the third largest Yemeni airport, into a military barracks, and it receives daily US military planes. Part of it has been converted into secret prisons and detention centers to hide and torture human rights

Security forces seize 32 pistols from smugglers on Jordanian border
[IsraelTimes] In separate incidents Thursday and Sunday, two Arab Israelis and one Paleostinian arrested trying to bring guns into Israel, West Bank

Israeli security forces arrested three men suspected of smuggling weapons into Israel and the West Bank from Jordan in separate incidents, confiscating 32 handguns in the process, the military and police said Sunday.

In the first incident on Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted two suspects along the border, close to Kibbutz Ashdot Ya’akov Ihud, some seven kilometers (nearly 4.5 miles) south of the Sea of Galilee.

IDF troops and coppers dispatched to the scene arrested the pair, both residents of the northern Arab-majority town of Bi’ina, and seized the 10 handguns in their possession, police said.

It was unclear why the military and police waited several days before announcing the catch.

In the second incident, on Sunday morning, IDF troops and coppers were dispatched to the border after soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted a suspect crossing the Jordan River near the West Bank settlement of Yafit, the military said.

The man, a Paleostinian from Jericho, was arrested by troops and officers, and the 22 handguns he was carrying in a bag were seized, police said.

Law enforcement officials have indicated that guns smuggled in from Jordan are often sold to Arab Israelis and West Bank Paleostinians, for both criminal and terrorist purposes.

The military and police have stepped up efforts to halt smuggling attempts along the Jordanian border over the past year, and have begun to report some success.

Unlike Israel’s other frontiers — with Egypt, Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
and Syria — its border with Jordan is largely open, often without significant fencing, and guarding is limited, making it an easy channel for large-scale smuggling.

Separately on Sunday morning, coppers and Israeli troops seized several firearms during a raid in the West Bank city of Hebron, the military and police said.

According to a front man for the Israel Police’s West Bank division, officers and troops searched the home of a Paleostinian suspect in Hebron, finding three assault rifles, two handguns, and several gun parts.

Police said two Paleostinians were arrested at the scene and were taken for further questioning. The IDF said one of the suspects was wanted for questioning by the Shin Bet security agency over alleged involvement in terror activities.

Authorities have increasingly sought to crack down on the spread of illegal weapons in the Arab Israeli community, which have been used to carry out a record-breaking number of murders in recent years.

The Abraham Initiatives, which monitors and campaigns against violence in the Arab community, tallied 116 Arabs killed in apparent homicides in Israel in 2022. In 2021, 125 Arabs were killed in Israel in community violence — an all-time record, topping the previous record of 96, set in 2020.

4 Iranians sentenced to jail for ‘inciting strikes’ and vandalism amid protests
[IsraelTimes] In 1st such case, defendants get 1-10 years in prison but may appeal verdicts; activist muppets on social media had called for three-day nationwide shutdown last month

Iran’s judiciary announced on Sunday jail terms of up to 10 years for people who called for strikes as part of a months-long protest movement.

It is the first time the judiciary has announced prison sentences for such incitement during the nationwide protests trigged by the September death in jug of Mahsa Amini.

The judiciary’s Mizan Online news website said the four defendants received between one and 10 years in prison. They were not identified and may still appeal the verdicts.

Activists on social media had called for three-day nationwide strikes starting on December 5, in support of the movement which began with the death of Amini, 22. She had been arrested by morality police for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.

Mojtaba Ghahramani, head of the judiciary for Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan, said the four were sentenced principally "for having incited drivers to strike," and for vandalism. He was quoted by Mizan.

According to Ghahramani, "none of the defendants is a driver or has anything to do with the transport sector."

"One of the defendants was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and another to five years for forming a group with the aim of disrupting national security," Ghahramani said.

Two others have been given a year in jail each and a fine for "disturbing public order and destroying truck windows," he said.

On December 5 local media reported that authorities sealed a jewelry shop and restaurant in Tehran belonging to football legend Ali Daei, after he backed the protesters’ strike calls.

Iranian authorities have described the protests mostly as "riots" and accuse hostile foreign nations of stoking the unrest.

Officials say hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed and thousands arrested since September 16.

Four men, including two on Saturday, have been executed for killing and wounding security force members in connection with the protests.
