-War on Police-
Biden calls for ‘peaceful protest’ after Memphis cops arrested in Tyre Nichols death
Mr. Wife is in Memphis for the annual International Blues Competition held in the bars of the Beale Street entertainment district. He called yesterday evening to say he may be coming home today, depending on whether or not the announced protests become violent.
[NYPost] President Joe Biden
...... 46th president of the U.S. Being a self-defined foreign policy whiz kid means never having to say you're sorry......
asked for "peaceful protest" Thursday after five fired Memphis coppers were arrested and accused of beating to death Tyre Nichols.

Nichols, 29, was pulled over by police on Jan. 7 and died three days later from his injuries. He and all five officers are African-American.

"I join Tyre’s family in calling for peaceful protest. Outrage is understandable, but violence is never acceptable," Biden said in a written statement. "Violence is destructive and against the law. It has no place in peaceful protests seeking justice."

Biden added, "Public trust is the foundation of public safety and there are still too many places in America today where the bonds of trust are frayed or broken. Tyre’s death is a painful reminder that we must do more to ensure that our criminal justice system lives up to the promise of fair and impartial justice, equal treatment, and dignity for all."

The five fired cops were indicted Thursday on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith were fired last week for excessive use of force, failing to intervene and failing to render aid to Nichols, who had been pulled over for alleged reckless driving.

Body camera footage of the officers assailing Nichols is expected to be released Friday after 7 p.m. ET. Authorities said Nichols fled his vehicle before suffering his fatal injuries.

Large-scale protests and riots against police brutality have been less common during Biden’s administration than under former President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
, when the May 2020 murder of St. George Floyd
...the patron saint of Minneapolis, a sterling example for our children and indeed for us all. St. George was martyed by the Devil's agents in blue while standing on a street corner preaching tolerance and racial justice or something like that...
by Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin sparked months of nationwide unrest.

Last week, however, dozens of black-clad demonstrators rampaged through downtown Atlanta to protest the shooting death of Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, who was protesting construction of a new $90 million police training center known as Cop City, a pet project of Biden White House aide and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Republicans criticized Biden while he was a presidential candidate for what they said was insufficiently forceful condemnation of violence after Floyd’s death as major cities experienced looting and widespread vandalism.

Left-wing Democrats, meanwhile, accused Biden of contributing to racial inequality by sponsoring laws in the 1980s and ’90s that caused the "mass incarceration" of minorities.

Independent Autopsy Reveals Tyre Nichols' Cause Of Death After Police Traffic Stop

[Yahoo] An autopsy independently commissioned by the family of Tennessee man Tyre Nichols came to a preliminary determination about how the 29-year-old died after a traffic stop by Memphis Police earlier this month.

The findings indicate that Nichols "suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating," family attorney Benjamin Crump said in a Tuesday statement.

The father of one was stopped by police for reckless driving on Jan. 7 and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace fearing for his life, his family members have said.

A group of five officers caught up to Nichols and beat him for three minutes, according to lawyers for the family, who were given a chance to see body camera footage earlier this week.

According to Romanucci, the footage showed officers using pepper spray, a stun gun and restraint tactics on Nichols. He was taken to a hospital, but died three days later.

Lawyers for the family say that in some of Nichols’ final moments of consciousness, he called for his mother and said he just wanted to go home.

All five of the officers, who are also Black, were fired last week as local and federal authorities continue to investigate the incident and decide whether to pursue charges.

Nichols had a 4-year-old son and worked at a Memphis-area FedEx facility, The New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reported.

I just spoke with him, Whiskey Mike. Everything is calm there now, but of course it would be. He is aware of the usual Antifa/BLM pattern of calm protests during the day followed by “activists” rioting after dark... and he’s experienced riots before — it’s been a while, but his colleagues in Chile thought it would amuse him to see the anti-Pinochet protests when he was on a business trip to the group in Santiago.

He also observed that the Blues competition has half the number of bands and half the attendance than there used to be before Covid, which at least means he and his comrades can get in and find seats for all the performances — less ambiance, perhaps, but more comfort. I’ll report back if he sees anything more interesting this evening.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 27, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • THREE MONTHS AFTER ANNOUNCING A LARGE-SCALE AFGHAN REFUGEE INITIATIVE, GERMANY HAS YET TO RECEIVE PEOPLE – After making several public announcements about the new program in the Fall of 2022, German authorities were forced to admit that no Afghans had yet been processed under the new program. At the time of the announcement, Germany had successfully transported nearly 1,000 Afghan refugees a month but things have slowed to a crawl since October 2022. It is not clear when a resumption is expected.

  • GREAT BRITAIN ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO AFGHAN REFUGEE PROGRAM – Parliament announced a few changes to the UK immigration routes for Afghan nationals. The changes have added special immigration provisions for Afghan civilians who the government had employed. Scroll down to the International News section to find the article and a link to the report.

  • UZBEKISTAN POWER EXPORTS HAVE YET TO RESUME – Several cities, including the capital, remain without power as another technical issue appears to have caused a delay in the resumption of electricity transmissions from Uzbekistan. Residents in Kabul expressed their outrage over the lack of current and have lost the means to communicate as cellular services have been affected as well.

  • JUST OVER A YEAR AFTER JAILS WERE EMPTIED, THE TALIBAN HAVE FILLED THEM BACK UP – Most of Afghanistan’s jails were emptied after the Taliban swept back into power in 2021. However, Taliban officials have been busy filling them back up in the intervening period. The Taliban claim to be holding 14,000 prisoners across its jail system and has said that nearly 30,000 were confined at one point in 2022. They say that most are not political prisoners and are being held for crimes punishable under Sharia law. Conditions in jails are a concern to human rights organizations. The suspension of aid is thought to have worsened the plight of many prisoners. ICRC and UNAMA do have periodic access to the facilities.

  • SEVERAL PROTESTS STAGED IN CITIES TO PROTEST BURNING OF QURAN IN SWEDEN – Several thousand people took part in the protests aimed at criticizing Sweden’s failure to act when a far-right Danish politician publicly burned the Muslim holy book outside of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. Demonstrations in Logar, Kunar, and Uruzgan provinces drew roughly 3,000 protestors to city centers. Sweden has come under fire from many in the international community for failing to ban the act.

NEXT 24 HOURS
THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING ON AFGHANISTAN TODAY – The meeting will include a briefing from several UN officials who have just returned from Afghanistan. The report is expected to be negative. While no resolutions are on the table, it is believed that a tougher line is being sought from many on the council with the Taliban and discussions may hint at additional steps to isolate the group.

US special ops kill senior ISIS leader, 10 associates in raid in Puntland’s Almiskad Mountains of

“Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said.

US forces carried out a raid this week that killed a senior ISIS commander in Somalia and ten of his associates, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was ordered by US President Joe Biden and carried out on Wednesday. Bilal al-Sudani was the senior ISIS figure targeted and killed, according to a statement from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

“Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan,” Austin said. “This action leaves the United States and its partners safer and more secure, and it reflects our steadfast commitment to protecting Americans from the threat of terrorism at home and abroad.”

No civilians were harmed during the operation, senior US administration officials said.

An official told reports that US special operations forces raided a cave complex in the mountains of northern Somalia, hoping to capture al-Sudani initially.

Officials said that Biden was briefed about the operation last week and approved it this week.

Last year, the Biden administration redeployed hundreds of US troops to Somalia, reversing a decision by former President Donald Trump to withdraw the forces that were on a counterterrorism mission.

“Al-Shabab has taken advantage of Somali instability and fractious politics to become al-Qaeda’s largest and wealthiest global affiliate. It exerts influence essentially throughout the country of Somalia,” a US official said at the time.

Nigerian Military Air Strikes Killed 31 Herdsmen, 8 Butchers, Cattle In Nasarawa
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has accused the Nigerian Air Force of killing its members in the Rukubi community of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

MACBAN President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma disclosed this in a statement sent to SaharaReporters on Thursday.

He said the herders, numbering about 40 were killed by operatives of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi, Benue State.

According to him, they were killed while returning from Makurdi, the Benue State capital, where they went to retrieve over 1,000 cows seized by the Benue Livestock Guards.

He said that after the payment of fines amounting to N29 million, some of the livestock was released to the herders by the guards and they were sadly trailed and killed while offloading the cattle shortly after they reached their destination in Nasarawa State.

The statement read, "The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria — MACBAN condemns the Barbaric killing of 30 Pastoralists with unspecified number of livestock by a purported Bombing raid from unknown source on January 21st 2023 in Rukubi Community, Ikye Development Area, Doma Local Government Nasarawa State.

"Those killed had gone to Makurdi to retrieve about 1,250 of their cows impounded by the Benue Livestock guards after paying a fine of about 29 Million Naira for violating the "anti-open grazing law of Benue State".

"After paying, the pastoralist had hired vehicles from Makurdi to convey back their seized livestock to Rukubi, and it was in the process of offloading their livestock that an attack was conducted which killed 31 Pastoralists, 8 Hausa Butchers from Benue who have escorted the vehicles to upload the cows and four (4) others are now on admission in Lafia Hospital.

"His Excellency, the Deputy Governor Nasarawa State, Commissioner of Police, the Emirs of Lafia & Doma, the Doma LG Chairman and the State Chairman MACBAN were all in attendance during the Burial of the dear departed in Rukubi Community today.

"This is the third time we have experienced such happenings. In the last two happenings, it was clear that the Airforce is being involved in strafing livestock between the border of Benue & Nasarawa State within the last one year.

"But in the recent one, it is not clear whether it was a Bomb Blast, distant attack or an Airstrike as reported by our Nasarawa State Branch."

MACBAN describes the action as not only condemnable but a war crime under the Geneva convention that prohibits the wanton killing of livestock.

He said, "We call on the authorities to not only investigate this terror but to also punish the culprits and to be sure that incidents like this will not happen again.

"Information available to us shows that the perpetrators must have been informed about the release of the livestock from Benue Livestock Guards Custody to impose double jeopardy on pastoralists lives and their assets.

"We wonder how animals easily become culprits to deserve such barbaric action by a supposedly disciplined and well-trained outfit of the Federal Government. MACBAN demands an unreserved apology to the families of the victims and to Nigerians in General for this reckless and reprehensible act of barbarism.

"The Federal Government must also investigate this incident as a matter of urgency and put a stop to the involvement of Airforce in the pursuit and killing of livestock to appease the Benue state Government. Adequate compensation must also be paid to the relatives of the victims as a Matter of serious concern."

Europe
Police in Spain raid home of suspect in church machete attacks
More on this story from yesterday.
[An Nahar] Police in Spain on Thursday raided the home of a man who is suspected of carrying out machete attacks at two churches that left one person dead and a priest seriously injured.

Officers searched the as-yet unnamed suspect's home to "determine the nature, terrorist or otherwise," of the Wednesday night attacks in the city of Algeciras, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said.

The detained man had no prior criminal record, and Sherlocks do not think anyone else was involved, Grande-Marlaska said. The Interior Ministry said the suspect was still being questioned, and had been under a deportation order since June last year.

The twin attacks by a single assailant have shaken the city, located near the southern tip of Spain across from a bay from Gibraltar. Witnesses said that during the second attack, a machete-wielding man jumped on the altar of a church before chasing a victim into a city square and inflicting mortal wounds.

The Interior Ministry said the man killed in the attack was a sacristan, an individual who prepares Mass, at the Church of Nuestra Señora de La Palma, while a priest was maimed earlier at the Gay Paree of San Isidro church.

Algeciras is a multicultural port city and the first point of arrival for many boats from North Africa, putting it at the center of Spanish debates on irregular migration. The violent mostly peaceful acts at the churches may inflame social tensions stoked by the far right in an election year, which is vying to win more local and national offices, as well as to form governing coalitions with the center-right Popular Party.

Algeciras town hall said the slain sacristan was named Diego Valencia, and it identified the maimed priest as Antonio Rodríguez.

The parish priest for Nuestra Señora de La Palma, the Rev. Juan José Marina, told Spanish media he thinks he was the attacker's intended target.

"In the same way that he sought out the priest at San Isidro and no one else, the same thing happened here," Marina said. "If I had been here, I would be dead."

A fellow sacristan who served with Valencia at the church, Manolo González, recounted the events of his colleague's slaying. The attacker climbed on the altar, he said, and Valencia came out "and asked to know what was going on."

A man wielding a machete then confronted Valencia, who fled outside to a public square. The attacker pursued him and then inflicted mortal wounds, González said.

The Islamic Commission of Spain, a body that represents Moslems in the country, condemned an "abominable, murderous and heartless act" that took place in "a sacred space for our Catholic brothers in Algeciras."

Candles and flowers adorned the two small churches with whitewashed walls on Thursday, as residents nervously passed police vans waiting in the street. Flags were flown at half-staff in Algeciras, and a minute's silence was to be held later in the day.
Breitbart has his name and nation:
Several churchmen and bystanders were stabbed or slashed in a series of attacks, allegedly by a Moroccan male, in two different churches in Algeciras, Spain, on Wednesday night, leaving one dead and others seriously injured.

Two churches were the targets of what is thought to be a possible Islamist terror attack in Southern Spain on Wednesday evening. Several clergymen were attacked with what was described as a "sword" or "machete", including sacristan Diego Valencia who was reported to have been killed.

Several others were maimed, some seriously, including a priest. The alleged attacker, named as 25-year-old Moroccan citizen Yasine Kanjaa by major Spanish newspaper El Pais was arrested shortly after the attack.

According to reports, the alleged attacker had an argument with his neighbour at a squat where he lived about Islam before punching him in the face and leaving. Later, the same man is alleged to have engaged churchgoers in conversation about religion, telling them they should become Moslems. Later again, before half past seven in the evening (1230 EST) the man returned with a weapon and started attacking religious icons in a church, El Pais reports.

When the man was told to leave he is said to have attacked the church’s priest, stabbing him in the neck and shoulder.

The attack continued at another church nearby, where a service was underway. Again the knifeman was said to have attacked religious idols — idolatry is forbidden in Islam — before chasing sacristan Valencia down the street. Valencia was killed outside the town hall with blows to the head from the alleged weapon. Photographs from the scene show a body covered with a blanket in the town square.

Some of those injured are said to have attempted to prevent the killing. Specialist counterterror police are running the investigation into the killing, and reports are calling the slaying a "possible Islamist terror attack".

Iraq
Court sentences 14 ISIS militants to death for their involvement in the Speicher massacre

Iraq's central criminal court has sentenced fourteen persons to death for their involvement in the Speicher massacre that saw as many as 1,700 Iraqi troops shot dead by the hands of ISIS militants in 2014, the media office of the Supreme Judicial Council said on Thursday.
The rulings, according to the statement, were issued in accordance with Article 4/Terrorism no. 13 of 2005.
More than 1,700 Iraqi Air Force cadets were killed on June 12, 2014, in Camp Speicher, a former U.S. military base just north of Saddam Hussein's hometown, Tikrit, when it was overrun by Islamic State, the ultra-hardline Sunni group.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli air attacks hit Gaza, escalation fears after Jenin raid
[Aljazeera] Israel has launched multiple air attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip a day after Israeli forces killed nine Palestinians — including an elderly woman — in the Jenin refugee camp, marking one of the deadliest raids in the occupied West Bank by Israel’s military in years.

Local sources in Gaza told Al Jazeera that Israeli warplanes had hit al-Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the territory, with at least 13 strikes in the early hours of Friday.

The al-Zaitoun neighbourhood in the south of Gaza City was also hit, as well as an open area east of Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza.

Witnesses and local media reported that Israeli drones fired two missiles at targets in Gaza before the fighter jets struck.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, and "cautious calm" had returned to Gaza by the morning, said Al Jazeera correspondent Maram Humaid.

The Israeli army said the air attacks on Gaza — one of the most densely populated areas in the world with 2.1 million residents — followed after two rockets were fired towards Israel at about midnight (22:00 GMT).

Air raid sirens had sounded in southern Israel as the initial two rockets were fired and then again after the Israeli air attacks.

The Israeli army said the rockets were intercepted by Israel’s air defence system and the country’s Channel 12 aired footage of Israeli interceptor missiles being launched into the night sky above the city of Ashkelon, about 12km (7 miles) north of Gaza.

No group has claimed responsibility for the reported rocket fire.

However, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the armed groups in Gaza "will continue to carry out [their] duty to defend the Palestinian people and their sanctities, and will remain the people’s shield and sword".

Gazans fire rockets at south as Israeli jets hit Strip in retaliatory strike
[IsraelTimes] Army says underground rocket workshop hit in central Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. in response to earlier attack; no injures or damage reported as missiles intercepted, fall short

Gazooks fired several rockets toward southern Israel and Israeli Air Force warplanes carried out sorties in the Gaza Strip early Friday as tit-for-tat fighting broke out amid sky-high tensions following a West Bank raid that left nine Paleostinian dead a day earlier.

At least three rockets were fired from Gaza at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, as Israeli jets bombed sites said to belong to the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terror group in retaliation for a rocket attack hours earlier. One of the rockets was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, another landed in an open field and a third fell short of the border, the army said, after alarms sounded in the towns Nir Oz, Ein Habesor and Magen. The Israel Defense Forces said it was also investigating after incoming sirens were activated near Kfar Aza, a kibbutz near the Gaza border.

The rocket attacks came as Israeli jets carried out a series of bombing raids in the central Gaza Strip in response to Gazook Death Eaters firing two rockets toward Ashkelon at midnight. Both projectiles were intercepted by Iron Dome.

The military said it targeted an underground facility where rockets are manufactured in the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza. It said the site was in an area surrounded by residential buildings and 180 meters (590 feet) from a storage facility maintained by UNRWA, the United Nations

relief agency for Paleostinian refugees.

Footage released by the military showed the site being bombed from the air.

"The attack will lead to significant harm to Hamas efforts to build up its arms," the IDF said in a statement.

In response to the second round of rocket attacks, the IDF said fighter jets targeted "one of the most significant" Hamas military bases, in the northern Gaza Strip.

On Friday morning Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that he had ordered the military to "prepare for action with a range of offensive means aimed at quality targets, in case we need to continue — until quiet is restored for the citizens of Israel."

He also said that the terror groups in Gaza had suffered a "severe blow" overnight.

The military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, claimed that its fighters fired anti-aircraft weapons and ground-to-air missiles at the Israeli planes carrying out the attacks.

There were no reports of injuries on either side.

cell in the northern West Bank city of Jenin Thursday morning.

Both Islamic Jihad and Hamas threatened to hit back over the deaths.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from the Strip and generally responds to rocket fire with airstrikes against the group regardless of who launched the attack.

According to Israeli officials, the IDF had foiled a "ticking time bomb" in Jenin on Thursday after receiving "accurate intelligence" from the Shin Bet security agency about the cell’s hideout apartment in the camp. Nine Paleostinians — including several members of the PIJ cell, other button men, and at least one uninvolved civilian — were killed, and another 20 were maimed in the festivities. The festivities on Thursday morning marked the deadliest Israeli operation in the West Bank in years.

Separately on Thursday afternoon, a Paleostinian man was killed in festivities with Israeli troops in the town of a-Ram, north of Jerusalem, the PA Health Ministry said. And in Gaza, a 13-year-old boy died of wounds sustained in the last major round of fighting between Israel and Gaza, in August 2022.

Nine Palestinians, including elderly woman, dead in Israel West Bank raid
[An Nahar] An Israeli raid on the occupied West Bank's Jenin refugee camp Thursday killed nine Paleostinians including an elderly woman, Paleostinian officials said, also accusing the forces of using tear gas inside a hospital children's ward.

The corpse count rose to "nine deaders including an elderly woman," the health ministry said, with multiple maimed.

In a separate statement, Paleostinian health minister Mai al-Kaila charged that "occupation forces stormed Jenin Government Hospital and intentionally fired tear gas canisters at the pediatric department in the hospital".

She described the situation in the refugee camp as "critical" and said Israeli forces were preventing ambulances from reaching the maimed.

Israel's army declined to comment when asked by AFP about the health minister's tear gas allegation.

The military has said only that its "forces are operating in Jenin".

Thursday's fatalities bring the number of Paleostinians killed in the West Bank so far this year to 29, including fighters and civilians, most of whom were shot by Israeli forces.

Jenin deputy governor Kamal Abu al-Rub told AFP that residents were living in a "real state of war".

"The Israeli army is destroying everything and shooting at everything that moves," he told AFP.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran subjects Sunni clerics to detention, disappearances, beating to stifle protests
[Rudaw] Iranian authorities have stepped up detaining Sunni holy mans in the Kurdish areas following a strongly worded video statement by dozens of influential religious scholars labeling the execution of anti-government protesters as "un-Islamic" and calling on the authorities to end the "illegal" detention of thousands of peaceful protesters.

The Sunni holy manal establishment, mostly present in the Kurdish, Balochi, and Turkmen areas of Iran, has overwhelmingly supported the protest movement sparked by Zhina (Mahsa) Amini’s death in mid-September.

Despite the seemingly audacious moves by the Sunni holy mans in supporting the protests, authorities had until recently refrained from cracking down on them, while proceeding with violent mostly peaceful arrests of over 20,000 protesters.

SDF Arrests Local ISIS Leader In Syria’s Raqqa

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Thursday the arrest of the “Wali of Raqqa,” a regional Islamic State (ISIS) leader, during the first day of “Operation Retaliation for Raqqa Martyrs,” a large-scale security operation in the countryside of Raqqa, north Syria.

The SDF Media Center announced in a statement that the operation, with air support from the US-led Global Coalition, resulted in the arrest of 68 ISIS “terrorists” among them “Atallah al-Maythan the Wali [governor] of the so-called Wilayah [province] al-Raqqa.”

The arrested “al-Maythan” led the ISIS sleeper cells affiliated with the “Khalid bin Al-Walid Battalion,” the statement noted.

During the interrogation, al-Maythan admitted that he planned and led terrorist acts, extorted residents to finance ISIS, and facilitated communication among terrorist groups, the statement reads.

The SDF announced on Wednesday the launch of a new operation to pursue ISIS sleeper cells in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition in Raqqa, Tabqa and surrounding regions in northern Syria.

The statement indicated that joint forces raided al-Karamal, a town 20 km east of Raqqa, al-Mansoura, a town west of Raqqa, and the towns of Sarrin and al-Jarniyah this morning.

The joint forces also arrested eight ISIS militants, two of whom had fled to areas outside the SDF-held areas across the Euphrates River after shooting at SDF fighters. No casualties were reported, the statement added.
Al Ahram adds:
The captured IS commander was identified as Atallah al-Maythan. Syrian Kurdish forces said he headed the Death Eater group's operations across Raqqa province, and allegedly ``confessed to his involvement in planning and leading terrorist acts,`` extorted money from residents in the area, and kept IS sleeper cells in contact.

Some 5,000 Syrian Kurdish-led fighters are involved in the operation, and have already raided some 80 locations, their spokesperson, Farhad Shami, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. The U.S.-led coalition was providing air support, reconnaissance, and gathering intelligence, Shami added.

This is the second recent operation by the U.S.-backed forces in Syria. In late December, the Syrian Kurdish-led fighters targeted IS cells in al-Hol and Tal Hamis, following a surge in Death Eater attacks.

'Even if it costs me my life': Bitar wants justice before blast anniversary
... which it might very well.
See also here for the one who left town in a hurry.
[An Nahar] Lead investigator into the Beirut port blast Judge Tarek Bitar has told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that he will go on with the investigation, "even if it is going to cost me my life" and hopes that there will be an indictment ahead of the third anniversary of the blast this coming August.

"I have nothing against Judge Oueidat but there are some suspicions that came up. He should come and defend himself," Bitar said. "I will continue with the case and I will not leave it unless they remove me completely."

"Everyone that I summon has to come because the blood of the victims is above everything," the judge added.

Lebanese judge Tarek Bitar crossed all red lines and openly challenged an entrenched ruling elite, as he decided to resume his investigation after a slew of lawsuits, mostly from politicians charged in the case, forced him to stop work for 13 months.

On Wednesday, he refused to step down

Abdel Massih: Justice minister's bodyguards assaulted MPs

[An Nahar] Chaos ensued Thursday inside the Justice Palace, after over a dozen politicians from reformist and traditional opposition parties met with caretaker Justice Minister Henri Khoury.

The heated meeting about the recent developments in the Beirut port probe led to scuffles with the minister’s guards who allegedly tried to snatch their phones as they filmed the meeting. Some of them say they were attacked, and have called for Khoury to resign.

"These aren’t guards, these are the dogs of the justice minister," opposition parliamentarian Adib Abdelmassih told the press after leaving the Justice Palace. "We were talking about the law in a civilized way and the parliamentarians were giving their opinions on the matter."

Abdel Massih called on the caretaker minister Henry Khoury to resign, after the incident, saying that the bodyguards of the justice minister assaulted the politicians.

MPs Waddah al-Sadek, Melhem Khalaf and others were asking the minister to act, after the latest judicial turmoil.

The bodyguards pushed the politicians and tried to take their mobile phones, Abdel Masih said.

"We raised our voice, calling on the minister to take an administrative decision regarding the deep rift in the judiciary. The minister raised his voice back and his guards attacked us and beat us," Abdel Massih said.
