Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief February 5, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • 2 BLASTS REPORTED IN KABUL – Two separate bombings reportedly occurred in Kabul on Saturday:

    • An IED was detonated in Police District 2 on Saturday evening, injuring two unidentified Taliban members traveling in a light truck. The blast occurred at the Pashtunian intersection, near the Ministry of Telecommunications and Technology.

    • A large explosion was reported near a hospital in the Qawa area (Kyle). There were no details available about this blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for either incident and no further information was provided.

  • SECURITY IN KABUL INCREASED – Several eyewitnesses have reported that Taliban security forces were on the streets of Kabul in force on Saturday and well into the night. The increased security was noticed prior to either of the two blasts that had been reported. Multiple rumors were spreading on social media but nothing had been confirmed that would account for the heightened measures. There were rumors that some foreign diplomatic facilities had closed and their staff had departed the country but these are currently unverified. While we do not have any valid information about a potential threat, we recommend that at-risk Afghans avoid going out if at all possible while the situation remains tense.

  • NETHERLANDS AGREE TO PAY SURVIVORS OF 2007 ATTACK THAT KILLED 20 NON-COMBATANTS – The Dutch government said it would not appeal a court ruling that held the country liable for the death of 20 people in a late-night attack in 2007, perpetrated by Dutch troops.

  • A 4.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRUCK IN PAKTIKA – An earthquake struck Paktika on Saturday morning at approximately 0900hrs local. Reports on any damage/casualties have yet to come in.

  • MORE INFO ON PAKISTAN’S AFGHAN ROUNDUP ON THURSDAY – After 20-30 male Afghan refugees were taken from their homes on Thursday and processed at local police stations. In many cases, a bribe was paid to secure their release. A public outcry occurred on social media and officials in Pakistan released statements to the effect that counter-terrorism operations were ongoing throughout the twin cities (Rawalpindi and Islamabad). While that is likely true, there were clearly some low-level entrepreneurial activities taking place by some in the police. A source said a caution had been issued to the police services from leaders in the government after reports of the social-media backlash were shown to the leadership.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Takhar: NRF forces attempted to assassinate a Tqliban official in the Rastaq district with a magnetic mine. But the mine fqiled to detonate properly and nobody was injured in the attack.

NEXT 24 HOURS
POLICE SEARCHES/DETENTIONS IN PAKISTAN MAY CONTINUE – While it appears the government has warned police from unlawfully arresting Afghan refugees in security sweeps across Islamabad/Rawalpindi. The economic crisis in the country may still mean at-risk Afghans could see the illicit activity take place. We advise at-risk Afghans to remain calm if they have their residences searched and cooperate with the authorities. As the searches are carried out, take note of police insignia and markings and make a mental note of any precinct or division numbers/names that may be on their uniforms. After the search has occurred and if anyone from their family was detained or property is taken, they should reach out to their case managers and report any information they have collected.

Priority Information can include:

  • Unit name/number of the police conducting the search

  • Any names visible on a nametag

  • Property searched

  • Questions asked

  • Any information provided about why and where a family member might be taken and what is the process for their release

  • Time/Date/Location/Duration of the search

We strongly advise against trying to take photos, arguing with the Police forcefully, live streaming, or otherwise threatening the officials in any way. It is our belief that such actions will only worsen the situation.

Blast Shakes Kabul, Injuring at Least Two People
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Afghan caretaker government security officials have reported a blast that took place in ’Pashtunistan Square’ in district two of Kabul city late Saturday.

Khalid Zadran Spokesperson of Kabul Police Command has confirmed the incident to Khaama Press that a kaboom took place on Saturday evening in Pashtunistan Square.

Mr. Zadran said the earth-shattering kaboom was caused by a magnetic mine placed in a Toyota ’Hilux’ vehicle, which injured two civilians. Kabul police spokesperson did not provide any further details about the terror incident, but security personnel has reached the area and investigations are underway.

Meanwhile,
...back at the fist fight, Jake ducked another roundhouse, then parried with his left, then with his right, finally with his chin...
some local Kabul residents have described the blast as quite horrific and loud which was heard from distant places. No one or group has claimed the responsibility for the attack so far.

Yesterday, anonymous people slaughtered seven members of a family in the ’Chimtaal’ district in Mazar-e-Sharif, a northern province of Afghanistan. It is still not identified who committed the group killing and what were the motives behind the slaughter.

Two weeks ago, Mursal Nabizada, a former parliament member of Afghanistan, and one of her security guards were in killed in the heart of Kabul, with no one taking the responsibility for the killing.

Despite the ruling regime’s tremendous efforts, security remains a major concern across Afghanistan. Target killing, explosion, and suicide kabooms take place in a frequent manner in Kabul and other major cities of Afghanistan.

IDF, Palestinian gunmen clash in West Bank raid targeting restaurant attack suspects
[IsraelTimes] 4 Palelostinians injured, 3 arrested during operation near Jericho following eatery shooting; refugee camp residents get text message telling them to keep children home during raid

Clashes broke out Saturday morning after Israel Defense Forces troops raided a refugee camp near the West Bank city of Jericho as part of operations to apprehend suspects involved in a shooting attack on a nearby restaurant last week.
That was the attack where the idiot’s gun jammed after the first bullet, so he hit nothing and accomplished only making himself a laughingstock. Still, the PA will probably give his family a stipend when he goes to jail.
At least four Paleostinians were maimed, two of them seriously, according to media reports.

It was unclear if they were directly involved in the violence at the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp, adjacent to Jericho.

There were no Israeli injuries, according to Hebrew-language media reports.

At least three Paleostinian suspects were said to have been arrested in the operation.

According to Paleostinian media reports, Israeli troops surrounded buildings where suspects were barricaded, and fired an anti-tank missile at the structure in an attempt to force a surrender.

According to the Kan public broadcaster, a text message was sent to the residents of the refugee camp, warning them to "keep children at home" during the operation.

"We act in a targeted manner against terrorism. Avoid unnecessary confrontations with the security forces and keep your children at home. Listen to us so we can restore peace to the camp," the message read.

According to the Haaretz daily, some mosques in the refugee camp had issued calls for residents to defend the area during the military operation.

There was no official comment from the IDF.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
SNA's Military Police arrests 8 Ahrar al-Sham members in Afrin city
[NPASYRIA] On Saturday, the Military Police of the Ottoman Turkish-backed opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA), arrested eight members of Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
, a member faction, in the city of Afrin, north of Aleppo.
There are only about 400 of them left. They’re considered an ally of Al Nusra (HTS) nowadays.
A local source told North Press, "The Military Police arrested eight members of the SNA’s Ahrar al-Sham faction on Villat Avenue in Afrin city."

The arrest came after the faction’s members made remarks critical of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
in the aftermath of a Ottoman Turkish dronezap which killed a member of Ahrar al-Sham on January 25, the source said.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
the source added, the Military Police hid the real reason for their arrest behind drug use charges.

The city of Afrin and its countryside have been under the control of Turkey and Ottoman Turkish-backed SNA following an invasion in 2018.
