Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief February 13, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • TAKHAR WOMEN’S RIGHTS ACTIVIST AND BROTHER RELEASED – The prominent women’s rights activist, Parisa Mobarez, and her brother were released by Taliban officials in the Province yesterday. They had been held for nearly a day and the charges filed against them have not been made public.

  • PAKISTAN VISA ISSUE – Less than two days after Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it would work to make the visa application process easier, reports out of Sweden say the Pakistan Embassy there issued approximately 1,600 visas to Afghans who had submitted fraudulent Swedish documents. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has halted the visa issuance process for all Afghans around the globe. A second unconfirmed report alleges that all Pakistan visas that have been issued to Afghans have been canceled. We are seeking to confirm what actions, if any, Pakistan has taken with regard to visas for Afghans.

  • INTERIOR MINISTER RECEIVES A YELLOW CARD FROM THE SUPREME LEADER AFTER SPEECH – After Sirajuddin Haqqani’s critical remarks in Khost the other day, the spokesman for the Taliban told news outlets that such remarks should be made in private rather than in public.

  • SEVERAL AID AGENCIES IN GHOR CEASE OPERATIONS AFTER REPORTEDLY BEING FORCED TO PAY BRIBES TO TALIBAN – Several aid organizations told AMU TV they were halting operations in the Province until the Taliban cease demands for 30% of all food and cash aid for residents. The Taliban Security Forces are thought to be extorting the agencies across many Provinces and the Taliban leadership’s continual calls for ‘better order in the forces’ seem to amount to little. In addition to cash and food, medical supplies are often plundered and then sold to the sick at a markup. Several late reports arrived stating the Taliban had fired some officials in Ghor over these issues. We have yet to confirm the veracity of these claims.

  • TALIBAN URGED BY THE UN TO REINSTATE WOMEN JUDGES AND LAWYERS – The head of UNAMA, Roza Otunbayeva, made the recommendation while meeting with the Taliban’s Chief Justice in a meeting to discuss the new legal framework being implemented in Afghanistan. She said the judges and lawyers play a critical role in representing women and children.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Uruzgan: An unidentified militant group assassinated a Taliban Intelligence Official (Qari Kamal-Dabaidah) in the capital. It is not clear what method the attackers used and which group carried out the operation.

HOUSE SEARCHES SLOWLY RESTARTING IN KABUL – After a short hiatus, Taliban security forces have renewed search efforts in Kabul. Yesterday, the searches focused on the 4th Police District. While the searches are not nearly as large as the spate that occurred over the previous two weeks, they are expected to continue. A sizable presence of Taliban trucks and personnel has been reported at the airport and this could signal more searches in the neighborhoods adjacent to the facility. It is not clear what the Taliban are searching for at this time and sources in the Police and Ministry of Defense admitted that no clear objective had been given to the security forces.

117 Al Shabaab Turbans Toes Up in 8 hr. Mudug Region Shootout
[Garowe] al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
hard boyz suffered casualties over the weekend in Central Somalia, the Commander of Somali National Army [SNA] infantry regiment General Mohammed Tahalil Bihi said, noting that the latest operation was carried out in Mudug region of Galmadug state in Somalia.

The operation, he noted, left at least 117 al-Shabaab hard boyz seat following 8 hours intense shootout with the group at Doonyaale in Galmadug. This was the biggest success against the group in 2023, he added while acknowledging support from members of the international community.

Somali National Army has been fighting alongside the US Africa Command, the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] and the local militia. Throughout the operation, the teams have managed to down several al-Shabaab commanders in strategic villages across the country.

"The al-Shabaab were driven out of their trenches. We are currently pursuing the remnants that fled into the forest after the heavy loss," Bihi, who has been coordinating teams against al-Shabaab hard boyz said, adding that the military will continue pursuing the hard boyz in their hideouts.

Al-Shabaab, he added, had lost strategic towns in Mudug region where they have been controlling for the last decade, adding that the Somali National Army will not give up until the region is liberated from the group. al-Shabaab controls large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

General Bihi noted that al-Shabaab hard boyz are notorious in some parts where they have been been unleashing on members of the public. The group, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud promised recently, would ve defeated in Galmadug and HirShabelle states where they are dominant.

The sustained operation against al-Shabaab started sometimes last year after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took over from Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo. Since then, thousands of al-Shabaab hard boyz are believed to have died in the process according to data given by the Somali National Army.

US military kills 12 Al-Shabaab militants in new airstrike
[ShabelleMedia] At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia and in support of Somali National Army engagements against al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
, U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense strike on Feb 10, 2023.

The strike occurred in a remote area approximately 45 km southwest of Hobyo, Somalia and about 472 km northeast of Mogadishu. The initial assessment is the strike killed 12 al-Shabaab fighters.

Given the remote location of the operation, the command assesses that no civilians were maimed or killed. Rooting out extremism requires intervention beyond traditional military means.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has publicly stated that economic reform, social and political reconciliation, and religious tolerance are key pillars of his strategy to mobilize society against international terrorist. Military actions are only a part of the Federal Government of Somalia’s efforts to comprehensively address their security challenges.

The U.S. is one of several countries providing humanitarian aid, stabilization efforts, economic development, and military assistance to the Federal Government of Somalia in their ongoing campaign.

U.S. Africa Command is the defense arm of the U.S. whole-of-government approach with African partners — diplomacy, development and defense. This three-pronged, or "3D" approach brings together multiple agencies from within the U.S. government to increase cooperation and support for partner-led, U.S.-enabled solutions to shared security challenges, including violent mostly peaceful extremism or terrorism.

"U.S. Africa Command provides support to the Somali government to address terrorist threats, but we are only part of the U.S. efforts there," said Gen. Michael Langley, AFRICOM commander. "Our Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development colleagues have programs that help build resilience through education and training; develop agricultural diversity; improve markets and trade; and strengthen democracy and good governance."

Somali army captures Al Shabaab base in Lower Jubba, 6 elite Darwish troops maimed defending Afmadow army base
[ShabelleMedia] Somali troops along with Jubaland regional soldiers managed to carry out a planned operation in al-Shabaab

-held territory in Lower Juba region on Sunday.

A senior military official confirmed that the allied forces swept into Qunbi location, where al-Shabaab used as a staging centre for years.

Following a heavy gunbattle, Somali forces took over the control from al-Shabaab fighters who fled to jungle, according to the residents.

The takeover came days after Jubaland president Ahmed Madobe pledged to start an offensive to liberate whole areas, including Middle Jubba region, where the al-Shabaab top leaders are believed to be stationed.

The recovered area lies near Afamdow on Somalia’s border with Kenya. The troops moved from Janay Abdalla, outside Kismaayo port city.

and Hirshabelle states were liberated and the president said the second phase for final push will kick off soon, per the government.
Somali National Army officers said that the army attacked the village from several directions, targeting al-Shabaab bully boyz gathering to carry out a terrorist attack.

Al-Shabaab has been trying to attack military bases as a retaliation to the ongoing military offensive across the country. The bully boyz have also started leaving strategic towns ahead of mega operations and in return, have always threatened civilians against embracing the current administration.

Al-Shabaab attack foiled in Jubaland state of Somalia

attack, authorities reported, which would have other two devastating impacts on the people of Somalia.

Sources from security teams said at least six members of Darwish forces were critically injured after the al-Shabaab attempted to attack an army base at Afmadow district within Lower Jubba, a region which is under the Kenya Defense Forces [KDF] who man Sector II of ATMIS.

Mahad Mohammed Islam, the commander of Darwish forces of the Jubaland regional army, said the military managed to detonate two trucks laden with explosives as they approached the security base. The al-Shabaab usually targets army bases across the country.

"We resisted the terrorist group's attack. So the enemy didn't do what they wanted because the first truck bomb went kaboom! in a deserted area outside the camp, and the second one was hit with a rocket outside the district," Commander Mahad Mohammed Islam stated.

The incident triggered heavy gunfire in the region as the regional troops clashed with the forces of Evil who suffered an immense setback. Several al-Shabaab commanders were killed during the melee with weapons that are said to be sophisticated and also confiscated by the regional troops.

For decades, al-Shabaab forces of Evil have been targeting members of the security forces, often opening fire at the various army bases. In 2016, the forces of Evil managed to kill over 200 members of the Kenya Defense Forces at El-Adde before raiding Kulbiyow Forward Operating Base killing over 70 KDF soldiers.

But in return, the al-Shabaab who took responsibility for the attack at Afmadow, have also suffered losses across the country particularly in Galgaduud, Hiiraan, and Bay regions, with the Somali National Army coordinating operations against the group with assistance from the US Africa Command and the local militia.

Also helping with operations are the African Union

Somali army kills 9 Al-Shabaab militants in fresh operation
[ShabelleMedia] At least 9 al-Shabaab

members were killed on Sunday during an operation by Somali troops in the Middle Shabelle region, a senior army commander said.

Mohammed Ahmed Taredishe, who is an SNA officer leading the operation said they inflicted heavy losses upon al-Shabaab fighters who fled their bases after being overpowered.

The SNA forces seized control of El-Ba’ad which straddles the border between Galgadud and the Middle Shabelle region, where most of the festivities were taking place since 2022.

The government and allied clan militias have forced the gunnies from swathes of territory in central Somalia since launching a major offensive last August.

The group has responded to the military pressure with a series of high-profile attacks in the capital Mogadishu and other cities, including boom-mobiles this month that killed at least 35 people.

The government forces backed by local clan militia in Galmudug
...a semiautonomous region in central Somalia, bordering Puntland on the north. Galmudug is not trying to obtain international recognition as a separate nation, but rather considers itself autonomous within the larger Somali federalism, for what that's worth...
State took the port town of Harardhere and the nearby town of Galcad without facing much resistance from al-Shabaab.

Harardhere was one of their most significant victories since launching an offensive against the group last year.

The security experts said the government of Somalia led by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud should replicate its cooperation with clan-based militias across the country.

Saudi forces surround STC camp in Aden
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Saudi forces reinforced with military vehicles and armored vehicles, surrounded on Sunday the Badr camp in the port city of Aden, southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
Informed sources in the city stated that the leaders of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias refused to hand over the Badr camp, located in Khormaksar area, to the so-called "Dera al-Watan" (Shield of Homeland ) forces that Riyadh established from the bully boy Salafist elements, who received training in Saudi Arabia

The sources indicated that the commander of the Badr camp, Abd al-Rahman Askar, refused to hand over the camp, which is part of its duties to protect Aden Airport, to a number of Saudi officers after they demanded that he hand over the sites to the Dara al-Watan forces.

The command of the Saudi forces sent a military campaign, reinforced with vehicles and armored vehicles, to storm the camp and arrest Askar, according to the sources.

This comes after the arrival of large numbers of Salafist elements recruited by Saudi Arabia with their military vehicles to the city of Aden coming from the Saudi camps.

Saudi Arabia continues to send the "Dera al-Watan" forces to Aden, replacing the STC forces, amid defections in the ranks of the latter’s leaders, and transferring weapons to the rural areas of restive Lahj

Britain
Three arrested after clashes outside UK migrant hotel
[Dawn] UK police have arrested three people on suspicion of violent mostly peaceful disorder during an anti-immigration demonstration by far-right protesters outside a hotel used to house asylum seekers near Liverpool.

The protest came amid heightened tensions as record numbers of migrants colonists are crossing the Channel in small boats, prompting the interior ministry to come up with a controversial plan to send such asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Merseyside Police said "missiles" had been thrown at officers and a police vehicle was damaged after several hundred demonstrators rallied late Friday outside The Suites Hotel in Knowsley.

Asylum seeker advocacy groups said the protesters were affiliated to far-right groups, while it was unclear who organised the demonstration.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul White said: "The scenes... were completely unacceptable, putting those present, our officers and the wider community in danger." Merseyside police commissioner Emily Spurrell told Radio City station: "It was incredibly dangerous and there were a couple of injuries amongst the coppers." The Liverpool Echo newspaper said a police riot van was set alight.

The Home Office has been using the hotel to temporarily house asylum seekers since last year, according to local media.

The Liverpool Echo published images of police in riot gear facing off black-clad protesters as smoke rose from a burning vehicle. It said footage sent to the newspaper also showed protesters apparently attacking a police vehicle with sledgehammers.

Protesters outside the hotel shouted slogans such as "Get them out," one pro-refugee group, the Merseyside Pensioners Association, said.

Three security forces were martyred in the attack and 22 others, including 15 employees of the gas and oil company, sustained injuries, according to local sources.

IDF: Israeli jets strike underground Hamas facility in central Gaza
[IsraelTimes] Military says attack on weapons site, come in response to rocket fire Saturday; warning sirens sound in Sderot, Kibbutz Nir Am, near Paleostinian enclave

Israeli fighter jets targeted an underground weapons facility in the central Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip overnight Sunday-Monday in response to a rocket launch from the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",-ruled Paleostinian enclave on Saturday evening, intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement early Monday that the targeted facility produced raw materials for manufacturing rockets and was run by the Hamas terror group.

The attack on the underground facility "harms Hamas’ ability" to produce weapons, the IDF said.

Shortly after the military confirmed the attack, rocket warning sirens blared in southern Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip, including Sderot and Kibbutz Nir Am. The alert also sounded in Kibbutz Ruhama, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) east of Sderot.

The IDF said four rockets were fired early Monday from Gaza into Israel, three of which went kaboom! mid-air. The fourth projectile landed in an open field, causing no injuries or damage.

The military said Israeli tanks on the Gaza border fired on a number of Hamas military lookout points in retaliation. It provided a short video of one of these attacks.

On Saturday night, the military said a single rocket from Gaza was downed by the Iron Dome air defense system.

IDF announces seizing NIS 50 million worth of drugs smuggled across Egyptian border
It’s amazing what can be accomplished when the nation’s border is defensible and the border guards are permitted to defend it.
[IsraelTimes] Israeli forces foiled an attempt to smuggle NIS 50 million ($14 million) worth of drugs into Israel from Egypt earlier this month, the military and police say.

According to the Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police, on February 5, soldiers operating surveillance cameras spotted a suspected drug courier driving an all-terrain vehicle close to the southern part of the border fence with Egypt.

Troops and officers dispatched the scene chased the man, who crashed the ATV near the Ramon crater cliffs.

The suspected courier, a Bedouin Israeli man from the Negev desert in his 30s, was detained by the forces, who found 120 kilograms of drugs in the ATV.

The drugs include 92 kilograms of heroin and cocaine, and 28 kilograms of hashish, police say, calling the bust "unprecedented."

IDF confirms nabbing terror operative during daylight raid in Jenin
[IsraelTimes] The military confirms that Israeli troops arrested Jabril Zubeidi during an operation in Jenin today.

In a joint statement with the Border Police and Shin Bet, the Israel Defense Forces says Zubeidi turned himself over to undercover officers and soldiers who carried out the daytime raid. The statement describes Zubeidi as a local operative with the Fatah-linked Tanzim terror group and says he’s been involved in attacks on Israel forces.

It alleges he also helped plan attacks and cites his suspected involvement in the snatching of an Israeli Druze teenager’s body after he was killed in a car crash.
That’d be 17-year-old Tiran Fero last November, a very strange decision on their part.
The remains were ultimately returned.

The IDF says Israeli soldiers returned fire after being shot at in Jenin, and also had explosives and rocks hurled toward them. The military adds that troops found ammunition in a car while carrying out searches.

It also says it’s aware of Paleostinian reports of injuries, as the PA’s health ministry says three people were seriously hurt by Israeli fire. No Israeli forces were maimed.

Daytime clashes between Israeli troops, Palestinian gunmen reported in Jenin

[IsraelTimes] Daytime shootouts are reported in Jenin, with Israeli forces clashing with Paleostinians as they enter the northern West Bank city.

According to reports, the Israeli troops were seeking to arrest Jibril Zubeidi, the brother of imprisoned terror chief Zakaria Zubeidi.

Footage on social media shows a column of armored Israeli vehicles in Jenin.

There is no immediate comment from the Israel Defense Forces.

PA says 14-year-old died of wounds sustained in Jenin clashes
Unfortunately, he was led into danger by his elders, and now he is dead. Still, the Palestinian Authorities will pay his family a hefty sum to reward them for producing such killable offspring for the cause.
[IsraelTimes] The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry says a teenager has died as a result of wounds sustained during festivities with Israeli troops in Jenin earlier.

The ministry identifies the teen as 14-year-old Qusai Radwan Waked.

Two other Paleostinians were seriously hurt during the festivities.

It was not clear to what extent the teen was participating in the festivities, but the IDF said troops had returned fire at button men who were shooting at them as they were arresting a wanted terror operative.

Islamic State kills 11 in central Syria gun attack, says monitor
[IsraelTimes] 10 civilians and a Syrian soldier are killed as button men attack group collecting truffles, says UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights; state news puts toll lower

At least 11 people, mostly civilians, were killed in a central Syria attack blamed on the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, a war monitor said Sunday.

The IS group "attacked about 75 people on Saturday while they were collecting truffles in the Palmyra area, in the eastern countryside of Homs," said the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group of unclear funding.

The attack killed "10 civilians, including a woman, and a member of the (Syrian) regime forces," it said, adding that others remain missing.

Syria’s state news agency SANA reported the attack but gave a lower corpse count, saying IS "terrorists" fired machine guns and killed four civilians, including a woman.

Ten others were maimed in the attack, some "critically," the news agency added.

After the jihadists lost their last scraps of territory following a military onslaught backed by a US-led coalition in March 2019, IS remnants in Syria mostly retreated into desert hideouts in the country’s east.

They have since used such hideouts to ambush Kurdish-led forces and Syrian government troops while continuing to mount attacks in Iraq.

Many people, including women and kiddies, have been targeted in recent years while truffle hunting in central, northeastern and eastern areas of Syria.

In April 2021, the holy warrior group launched a similar attack, abducting 19 people, mostly civilians, in the eastern countryside of the central city of Hama.

s targeting IS desert hideouts.

The Syrian conflict, which was triggered by the suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations, has claimed around 500,000 lives and displaced around half the country’s prewar population.
