Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief February 17, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • LARGE AVALANCHE IN BADAKHSHAN, CASUALTIES REPORTED – Two districts along the border with Tajikistan reported the avalanche had killed at least 12 citizens and destroyed approximately 50 homes. Heavy snow has affected the Province and an earlier avalanche claimed the lives of 2 people when it swept a vehicle off a mountain road earlier in the week. Limited emergency services units were unable to assist the region over fears that heavy truck traffic could cause additional damage. Tajikistan reported 17 of its citizens had been killed by avalanches on its side of the border.

  • TALIBAN BAN CONTRACEPTION, SAY IT IS WESTERN EVIL – The Taliban have reputedly forced storekeepers and medical clinics to halt the sales of contraceptive devices in several cities. Since the takeover, many midwives have been threatened by security forces personnel for providing contraceptives. It is not clear if this is an official national policy at this time.

  • SUICIDE BOMBER IN SOUTH WAZIRISTAN ATTACK SAID TO HAVE COME FROM AFGHANISTAN – Pakistani authorities say the perpetrator of the suicide bombing in South Waziristan last Thursday was one Nik Rahman Mahsud and that he came from Logar. The TTP claimed credit for the attack and the continued use of Afghan citizens in these attacks is thought to be the main reason Pakistan’s security forces have been ordered to interview Afghan populations in the country.

  • KARACHI POLICE STATION ATTACKED BY GUNMEN – In a brazen evening attack, a group of unidentified gunmen targeted the Karachi Police Office which is the headquarters for the Police in the city (Saddar neighborhood). Sources say the attack was carried out by 12 men in police uniforms and a significant gunfight broke out between police and the armed group. 3 of the attackers were said to have been killed and 4 Pakistanis are dead with another 18 security force members wounded. It is not clear what happened to the other 9 gunmen who launched the attack. The TTP has claimed credit for the attack but this has yet to be verified.

  • US ANNOUNCES IT HAS KILLED A SENIOR ISIS LEADER IN SYRIA – The leader, Hamza al-Homsi, was said to have been killed in an air assault (helicopter) raid in Northeast Syria on Thursday. Officials said that no other ISIS militants were killed or captured in the engagement. 4 Americans were wounded in the fighting.

NEXT 24 HOURS
PAKISTAN INCREASING ITS SECURITY POSTURE – After the attack on the Police Headquarters in Karachi, Islamabad announced it was raising its domestic security stance to its highest level. Several sources have stated there are forthcoming attacks planned in other cities across the country as the TTP tries to destabilize the regime. At-risk Afghans will see significantly more patrolling in cities and the security checkpoints at entrances have been reinforced. As some of the recent suicide bombing attacks have been attributed to Afghan nationals, it is likely that searches of locales frequented by Afghan refugees will intensify. Yesterday’s search operations in Golra resulted in the search of 40 houses, 7 motorcycles, and over 30 pedestrians. Officials in Islamabad said search operations had been scheduled for all of Islamabad over the coming days.

US arclights 5 Al-Shabaab turbans in Somalia
The US Africa Command has confirmed the latest Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
targeting al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
murderous Moslems in Central Somalia, a statement released on Thursday confirmed, with the American team conceding that it pulled the dronezap upon the request by the federal government of Somalia, whose soldiers have been pursuing al-Shabaab.

According to the statement, the strike occurred in a remote area approximately near Bacadweyne, Somalia which is approximately 460 km northwest of Mogadishu. The US said five al-Shabaab fighters were instantly killed following the latest dronezap in the country.

"Given the remote location of the operation, the command assesses that no civilians were maimed or killed," the statement noted.

Military actions, the US said, are just one part of the Federal Government of Somalia’s efforts to comprehensively address their security challenges. The airstrike comes when Somalia announced the killing of over 70 murderous Moslems in the village on Wednesday and an additional 200 in HirShabelle on Thursday.

This comes after a United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
report published this week noted that al-Shabaab revenues have increased from $100 million annually to $150 million even with robust measures by the government to block the channels of collection. Somalia has already blocked 250 bank accounts and 70 mobile money transfer firms linked to al-Shabaab activities.

Al-Shabaab has been on the receiving end for the last seven months following joint military efforts led by the Somalia National Army on all fronts, which have left hundreds of the murderous Moslems dead. Additionally, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has incorporated religious scholars in his bid to counter the Death Eaters ideologically.

Arabia
Tanker owned by Israeli reportedly attacked by Iranian drones in Arabian Sea
[IsraelTimes] BBC Persian says Campo Square, which belongs to Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime Company, was also targeted by naval vessels in attack last week

A tanker owned by an international company headed by an Israeli was targeted last week by Iranian naval vessels and apparent suicide drones in the Arabian Sea, according to a report Friday.

Citing a US military official and a regional military source, BBC Persian said the attack on the Campo Square involved several Iranian ships and likely the Shahed 136 drone, which Russia has been using in its invasion of Ukraine.

The report said the attack did not cause significant damage to the Liberian-flagged ship.

According to the BBC, filings showed the Campo Square belongs to Zodiac Maritime Company, owned by Israeli shipping magnate Eyal Ofer. Zodiac said in response that the tanker is managed by a Greek company.

The military source was quoted saying the attack could signal an "intensification of Iran’s threatening actions against shipping in the region."

The source also told the news hound that Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
itself carried out the attack.

The British Foreign Office said that it was working to clarify the matter, while stressing ships must be allowed to navigate freely.

#1  The drone used in the attack on the commercial diesel tanker MV Pacific Zircon late last year was traced back to Iran, US military officials said at the time, as were the drones used in similar attacks on the Mercer Street and Helios Ray in 2021. All three of the ships were either owned by or linked to Israeli businessmen.
Following last month’s drone incident in Isfahan, suspected Israeli airstrikes hit Iran-linked convoys crossing into Syria from Iraq along a route which Western officials say the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) uses to smuggle sophisticated projectile weapons and radar systems towards Israel’s borders. https://www.al-monitor.com

Terrorists attack CTD officials in Kalabagh, TTP commander killed in exchange of fire
[Dawn] The Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Counter-Terrorism Department’s team in Mianwali’s Kalabagh came under attack by a group of armed Lions of Islam belonging to the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
Pakistan (TTP) on Thursday night, the CTD said.

According to a statement issued by the CTD on Friday, the Lions of Islam and security officials exchanged fire for 20 minutes during which a terrorist was killed.

"The slain murderous Moslem was an important TTP commander identified as Habibur Rehman," it said, revealing that a Kalashnikov, suicide jacket and TTP stickers were recovered from the terrorist’s possession.

The statement said that two Death Eaters managed to escape during the exchange of fire and a grand search operation has been launched to arrest them.

"A case against the attack has been registered at the CTD cop shoppe in Sargodha," the statement added.

There were no reports of any injuries to CTD personnel during the attack.

Thursday’s attack is significant in that Death Eaters — who had so far targeted cop shoppes and checkposts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
and areas bordering Afghanistan — have set their sights in Punjab.

Earlier this month, a cop shoppe in Mianwali had also come under a gun attack by a group of TTP terrorists. Fortunately, no injuries to the police personnel were reported. After the attack, the Punjab police had launched a grand counterterrorism operation in the highly complex and inaccessible hilly areas of the district.

’s Chamkani cop shoppe between 3am and 4am on Friday morning, the police said.

Peshawar Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Zafar Ahmed told Dawn.com that the attackers were on cycle of violences. "The coppers were alert and they retaliated in full fire after which the men fled."

He said that some cycle of violences parked inside the cop shoppe suffered damage. However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
no loss of life or injuries were reported.

"Peshawar police is more alert than before to fail terrorists’ wicked plans and face them," SP Ahmed added.

He further said that additional police convoys have been called and a search operation is under way in nearby areas.

Last week, the CTD claimed to have killed a suspected terrorist allegedly belonging to the TTP in an encounter and arrested 11 other members of banned outfits from different cities during intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across Punjab.

January was the deadliest month since 2018, in which 134 people bit the dust — a 139 per cent spike — and 254 received injuries in at least 44 murderous Moslem attacks across the country.

TTP attack on Karachi police chief’s office Friday evening driven off, 3 turbans and 4 good guys toes up along with 19 maimed
[Dawn] TTP claim responsibility; Murtaza Wahab says 4 people martyred and 19 injured.

The office of the Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
police chief, which came under attack on Friday evening by armed bad boys, has been cleared, officials said, adding that at least three murderous Moslems had been killed.

"I can so far confirm that the Karachi Police Office (KPO) building has been cleared. Three murderous Moslems have been neutralised," said Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab on Twitter at 10:42pm, three-and-a-half hours after the attack occurred.

Speaking to Geo News separately, he reiterated that the building had been secured. He said that the bomb disposal squad was checking if the jackets worn by the murderous Moslems were rigged to detonate.

A spokesperson for the Sindh Rangers added the operation had been completed and the process of clearing the area was under way.

DIG East Muqaddas Haider, who was among the senior officers leading the operation, told Dawn.com, that there were a total of three attackers who arrived at the KPO in a Toyota Corolla.
In the wilder parts of the world jihadis prefer Toyota SUVs and trucks, but Karachi has long claimed to be civilized.
Haider said that one of the attackers went kaboom! on the building’s fourth floor while two others were rubbed out on the roof.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Karachi police said that all three murderous Moslems who attacked the KPO had been killed in the operation. The spokesperson said that this was a "major operation" in which senior police officials, including the South and East DIGs, had participated alongside the Rangers and the army.

"With grace of Almighty Allah, the KPO and surrounding areas have been cleared of the murderous Moslems completely and further information will be shared with the media soon," the police statement said.

Reports of firing on Sharea Faisal — Karachi’s main thoroughfare with a number of strategic installations, including the Pakistain Airforce’s Faisal Base — emerged around 7:15pm. Extra police contingents and Rangers were called to the site of the attack.

Speaking to Geo News, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that the attack took place around 7:10pm. He said that the city police chief was not currently in Karachi.

Sharea Faisal had been closed for traffic during the operation with the Sindh government spokesperson requesting citizens to stay put where they were.

The Saddar cop shoppe, located next to the police chief’s office, had also issued a statement saying it had come under attack. "SHO, PI Khalid Hussain Memon said that unknown accused [attacked] Saddar cop shoppe near Karachi Police Office. Firing is going on everywhere," the initial statement had said.

South DIG Irfan Baloch earlier told DawnNewsTV said that "spectacular" firing was ongoing but said that the situation would be brought under control. He had, however, refused to comment on the number of people injured, saying that it could only be confirmed once officials would sweep the area.

He said that the entire city’s police force had been called to the scene, in addition to the Rangers and the Quick Response Force (QRF). He further said that the attackers had also lobbed hand grenades. He said that the attackers had come "fully prepared" and were putting up a "tough fight".

Overseas cricket players are currently competing in the Pakistain Super League, and Karachi is one of the host cities. There is a game scheduled for Saturday (tomorrow).
Thank goodness the cricket won’t be disarranged in any way.
CASUALTIES
Sindh Health Department’s spokesperson Mehar Khursheed shared a list of the casualties with Dawn.com, which said four people were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) dead, and 19 injured.

Earlier, Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab gave a breakdown of the dear departed, saying they included two coppers, one Rangers official and one civilian.

TTP CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY
The outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
Pakistain (TTP) claimed the attack in a statement issued by its spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani.

The storming of the Karachi police chief’s office comes on the heels of attacks in KP and areas bordering Afghanistan. Since the talks with the TTP broke down in November last year, the bad boy group has intensified its attacks while gunnies in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
have also stepped up their violent mostly peaceful activities and formalised a nexus with the outlawed TTP.

Speaking on today’s attack, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told Geo News that the government was under the impression that the murderous Moslems did not have access beyond KP and Balochistan. "But now we can see they can reach other cities," he said.

And Tolo News reports the drama:
Gunmen stormed a police station in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Friday, killing at least two people in a hail of gunfire and a series of loud explosions.

Police snipers took up positions near the station and all lights in the area were switched off.

Security forces had cleared three of the building's five floors as well as the rooftop, Murtaza Wahab, a spokesman for the Sindh provincial government, said.

The Karachi police surgeon told Reuters that two people had been killed and six wounded.

A huge explosion was heard inside the station after a series of blasts when it was first attacked.

Top cricket teams shunned Pakistan for years after six policemen and two civilians were killed in a 2009 attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

Southeast Asia
4 policemen killed, governor wounded in southern Philippine ambush
[BenarNews] Four coppers were killed and three other people, including a provincial governor, were maimed in a roadside ambush in the volatile southern Philippines on Friday, officials said.

The coppers were escorting a convoy transporting Gov. Mamintal Adiong when unidentified button men attacked them on a highway near Maguing town in Lanao del Sur province, according to his younger brother Zia Alonto Adiong, a local politician.

"Four of his escorts were killed," Adiong told BenarNews, adding that his older brother was among three people maimed.

"The governor is safe. He is out of danger now," he said without elaborating.

Fahad Molok, the mayor of Maguing, told BenarNews that the area where the attack occurred was a controlled area of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the Philippines’ largest former separatist group.

In 2014, the MILF signed a peace deal with Manila in exchange for control of a large Moslem autonomous area.

Under the terms of that deal, former MILF fighters agreed to give up their arms in exchange for money. A small number were also trained as coppers and members of the army.

The deal however did not sit well with some of the fighters, and many of them splintered and joined other rebel factions, or turned to banditry or guns for hire, officials said.

Molok said that local coppers quickly responded to the site "but the perpetrators were already gone."

It was not immediately clear what the motive for the attack was, and whether Adiong had any armed enemies.

Intense political rivalries and clan wars are all too common in the Philippines, especially in the southern island of Mindanao where years of insurgency has led to a proliferation of firearms.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Homs: Islamic State accused of killing truffle hunters in Syria
[BBC] At least 53 people have been killed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist hard boy group in Syria, state media reports.

The group were reportedly searching for desert truffles when they were targeted in the province of Homs.

The director of Palmyra hospital said 46 civilians and seven soldiers were killed. The bodies of all victims had gunshot wounds to the head, state news agency SANA reported.

The jihadist group did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) - which relies on a wide network of sources on the ground in Syria - said the attack was carried out by jihadists on cycle of violences who opened fire on the truffle hunters.

The group has targeted truffle hunters before in Syria.

Sixteen people, mostly civilians, were killed last Saturday in a similar attack targeting foragers in the same area, the SOHR said.
Update from Rudaw at 2:25 ET:
Five others were injured by shrapnel and are receiving medical treatment.

A survivor told SANA that the militants torched their vehicles at the site of the attack.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 46 civilians are dead and seven ISIS militants, including one officer, were killed in the attack.

The Observatory also reported that in a similar attack on truffle hunters, more than 75 people were kidnapped by ISIS on February 12. Sixteen of them have been executed, including a woman and a member of the Syrian army. The fate of the rest remains unknown.
More from NPA Syria:
The victims were picking truffles in the desert at the time of the sudden attack. “They were brutally murdered, whereas the government forces died during the clash with the ISIS militants,” the source noted.

Lately, the Syrian Desert has been witnessing daily attacks by ISIS sleeper cells against people, government facilities and headquarters, and Iranian military positions despite repeated combing operations by the government forces.

Iranian-backed militias control large areas of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, after expulsion of the ISIS from the area in 2017.

Protesters in Iran marched through the streets of multiple cities overnight in the most widespread demonstration in weeks amid the monthslong unrest that’s gripped the Islamic Theocratic Republic, online videos purported to show Friday.

The demonstrations, marking 40 days since Iran executed two men on charges related to the protests, show the continuing anger in the country. The protests, which began over the September 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the country’s morality police, have morphed into one of the most serious challenges to Iran’s theocracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Videos showed demonstrations in Iran’s capital, Tehran, as well as in the cities of Arak, Isfahan, Izeh in Khuzestan province and Karaj, the group Human Rights Activists in Iran said. The News Agency that Dare Not be Named could not immediately verify the videos, many of which had been blurred or showed grainy nighttime scenes.

In Iran’s western Kurdish regions, online videos shared by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights showed burning roadblocks in Sanandaj, which has seen repeated demonstrations since Amini’s death.

Hengaw shared one video that included digitally altered voices shouting: "Death to the Dictator!" That call has been repeatedly heard in the demonstrations, targeting Iran’s 83-year-old Lord High Potentate and Supreme Leader of All He Surveys Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...
. Other videos purportedly shot in Tehran had similar chants, as well as scenes of heavily protected riot police in the street.

Protesters also marched in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province near Pakistain after Friday prayers, online videos showed. Anti-government demonstrations have been happening for months as well on Fridays in the restive province, which is a majority Sunni region. Its Baluch people long have complained about being treated as second-class citizens by Iran’s Shiite rulers.

Iranian state media did not immediately acknowledge the demonstrations.

Since they began, at least 529 people have been killed in demonstrations, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran. Over 19,700 others have been detained by authorities amid a violent mostly peaceful crackdown trying to suppress the dissent. Iran for months has not offered any overall casualty figures, though the government seemed to acknowledge making "tens of thousands" arrests earlier this month.

The demonstrations had appeared to slow in recent weeks, in part due to the executions and crackdown, though protest cries could still be heard at night in some cities.

Forty-day commemorations for the dead are common in Iran and the wider Middle East. But they also can turn into cyclical confrontations between an increasingly disillusioned public and security forces that turn to greater violence to suppress them, as they had in the chaos leading up to Iran’s 1979 revolution.

Iran’s hard-line government has alleged without offering evidence that the demonstrations are a foreign plot, rather than homegrown anger.

The country’s rial currency has collapsed to new lows against the US dollar. Tehran continues to enrich uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels after the collapse of its nuclear deal with world powers and has enough of a stockpile to build "several" atomic bombs if it chooses. Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch clutched at his shoulder. Ow! he exclaimed, with feeling......
Tehran has been arming Russia with the bomb-carrying drones Moscow has been using in the war in Ukraine.

US says IS commander killed, troops wounded in NE Syria raid UPDATE in eastern Deir ez-Zor
BEIRUT (AP) — The U.S. military said Friday a helicopter raid led by its forces in northeast Syria left a senior leader with the Islamic State group dead and four American service members wounded.

Separately, local media and a monitor group said an IS attack on Friday in central Syria killed dozens of civilians.

The U.S. military said in the short statement that its operation was conducted Thursday night in partnership with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces which is allied with the U.S.

It added that "an explosion on target resulted in four U.S. service members and one working dog wounded." It did not say in which part of northeast Syria the raid was conducted.

It identified the killed IS commander as Hamza al-Homsi.
How... euphonic.
Despite their defeat in Syria in March 2019, IS sleeper cells still conduct attacks around Syria and Iraq where they once declared a "caliphate."

On Friday, IS gunmen in central Syria shot dead at least 36 people south of the town of Sukhna, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor.

Pro-government radio station Sham FM reported the militants ambushed people who were foraging for wild truffles in the desert. State television put the death toll at 53.
Update from NPA Syria giving us names and places at 1:30 p.m. ET:
On Saturday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced the killing of two leaders of the Islamic State (ISIS), and the wounding of four soldiers of the US-led Global Coalition in two security operations in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

The SDF Media Center released a statement, saying that its forces, with the support and participation of the Global Coalition forces, carried out two anti-ISIS security operations in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

The Anti-Terrorism Units (YAT) of the SDF carried out the first operation in al-Sabha district in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, killing senior leader of ISIS called “Mohannad Al-Sari Al-Fadgham,” the statement added.

Al-Fadgham is “a member of the ISIS’s dangerous intelligence unit who was involved in assassinations against our forces,” said the SDF Media Center.

In the second operation, YAT attacked a senior ISIS leader, “Hamza al-Homsi,” who refused to surrender and blew himself up, wounding four soldiers of the Global Coalition.

A number of weapons and military equipment were confiscated during the operations, the SDF added.
