Daily Evacuation Brief March 9, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • FINANCE MINISTER STEPS DOWN – Hedayatullah Badri, the Minister of Finance for the Taliban has resigned from his position. Sources told AMU TV that the cause of his departure was related to differences with the Supreme Leader. If this report is true, he is believed to be the highest-ranking Taliban official to resign since they took power.

  • RAID IN MAZAR-I-SHARIF KILLS 8 – Taliban forces reportedly raided a house in Police District 7 of Mazar-i-Sharif on the night of 7 March and killed 8 men they said were ‘rebels’ and ‘kidnappers’. There was concern that photos from the scene that were distributed by the Taliban had been staged and the weapons that were placed in the hands of the dead looked unnatural and were extremely clean. There has been speculation that the Taliban may have staged a similar incident in a security clearing operation in Herat.

  • ISIS-K CLAIMS ATTACK THAT KILLED THE CHIEF OF THE WATER DEPARTMENT IN HERAT – Nader Kakar and 2 friends were killed in a targeted attack in Herat City yesterday by an unidentified gunman. 3 others were injured in the attack and it is not known if the gunman was apprehended. Kakar was serving as the head of the water department in Herat and had previously led the same department in Kandahar. ISIS-K claimed credit for the attack on its website, The Khorasan Diary. However, there has been some speculation the murders were carried out by another group.

  • THE UNITED NATIONS WARNED THAT A DROP IN AID IS COMING DUE TO GENDER BANS – The UN envoy in Afghanistan warned the Taliban that aid was likely to be cut as a result of the draconian policies in place for women. A source in Kandahar said the Supreme Leader dismissed the threat as ‘rhetoric’.

  • PESHAWAR’S COUNTER-TERRORISM DEPARTMENT ISSUES ALERT OF IMMINENT TTP ATTACK – The Department issued the alert to all police and military forces and also posted copies of it on their social media site. The Department said it expects an action similar to the January Police Mosque bombing. The warning states that a threat of a ‘high-intensity’ attack was expected within the coming days and that the following would be likely targets:

    • Police gatherings

    • Police stations

    • Police establishments

    • Police lines

    • Traffic headquarters

  • While the threat is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, it could easily focus somewhere else in the country. At-risk Afghans are advised to avoid Police facilities or checkpoints until the threat has passed.

hard boy group which attempts to topple the UN-backed government.

Eyewitnesses told Radio Shabelle by phone that a security checkpoint at the busy KPP junction within Hodon district came under assault during the evening hours.

There was no immediate confirmation of the casualties as result of the overnight al-Shabaab attack in the seaside city. Police beefed up security in the areas afterwards.

Al-Shabaab stepped up attacks in Mogadishu in response to military offensive in its strongholds in central and southern region by government forces with the support of local people.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab militants neutralized in Jubaland state
Follow up to this story from yesterday.
[Garowe] The al-Qaeda-linked group, al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
was on Tuesday morning neutralized in Jubaland, a top government official said, hours after the group had claimed running over a military Forward Operating Base in the state, killing "several" soldiers.

The faceless myrmidons raided the military Jana Cabdalle in Jubaland, in an attack that come several weeks after the local forces conquered the village, although without a significant struggle. Jubaland is mainly controlled by both government and African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] forces.

Mohamud Sayid Aden, the Vice President of Jubaland state, maintained that the faceless myrmidons had been repulsed by the military after they attacked a camp within the village which is approximately 60 kilometers west of Kismayo
...a port city in the southern Lower Juba province of Somalia, at the extreme southern end of the country (always assuming Somalia can be called a country). It is the commercial capital of the autonomous Jubaland region....
, the regional administrative capital of Jubaland.

"This morning the Khawarij (deviants) attacked Janaa Cabdalle base, a strategic base which was captured from them before," he said, using a term for al-Shabaab murderous Moslems.

"As is the hallmark for their attacks they used a series of explosives and suicide kaboom, but the Somali troops defended the base," he added.

He said Tuesday’s al-Shabaab attack "failed" as government troops fought off the murderous Moslems. Aden said barriers erected by the soldiers in anticipation of the al-Shabaab attack prevented explosives from penetrating the base.

According to him, five soldiers were killed in a battle that could have been after all deadly while 10 others were critically injured. "Brave men are among the dead, and as opined in a fatwa (ruling) by the religious scholars, they will be in paradise," he said.

The VP said the group had suffered the most casualties but the faceless myrmidons claimed they had killed over 89 soldiers. Abdulaziz Abu Mus’ab, the spokesperson of the group, told al-Shabaab media that 20 vehicles were seized from the government forces.

But the VP denied the claims while insisting that regional troops with the help of those from ATMIS, US Africa Command, and local militia were still in control of the strategic village. The al-Shabaab purported number of casualties cannot be independently confirmed.

"The target is their biggest base in Middle Juba, a final offensive on Jilib and Buale and the other big bases they have been occupying for a long time," he said. "Janaa Cabdalle is the closest strategic base to launch an offensive from."

The government of Somalia has been pursuing the faceless myrmidons for the last seven months and the results have been positive according to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Over 700 faceless myrmidons have been killed and their bases were taken over according to officials from Somali National Army.

#1  The clearing of what was once called Oultre Juba, or the south of the Juba River, is essential if travel and intercourse between Somalia and Kenya is ever to be restored. However, Shabaab must fight frantically to ensure its survival; the loss of Jubaland would allow the government to focus on its enemy north of Mogadiscu. And Shabaab would not soon survive.

Caribbean-Latin America
Mexico Receives New Wave of Afghan Refugees: Sources
[KhaamaPress] Mexican authorities have announced that Afghan refugees have unprecedentedly increased in Mexico, aiming to reach the United States through illegal channels.

According to official sources, in January, some 410 Afghan refugees entered the United States through this route.

The Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) has announced that 13,000 people had applied for asylum in January, out of which there were 430 Afghan nationals, according to CNN
...the organization formerly known as the Cable News Network. Now who knows what it might stand for...
. Although the number is not significant compared to that from Latin America, intending to migrate to the US, it indicates a considerable rise in the number of Afghan refugees in the Latin American country.

These asylum seekers will enter the US through human trafficking groups, who have been running this illegal business for decades in Mexico.

Head of COMAR, Andrés Ramírez said most of the Afghan refugees move towards the north, border cities to the United States. "Afghan and Mexican culture varies quite a lot, therefore, Afghans prefer to move to the United, instead of settling in Mexico," Mr. Ramirez.

Doctors Without Borders has confirmed to CNN the organization has witnessed requests for help from Afghan refugees in Mexico. The organization’s head of mobile services said, "when people are forced to leave their country due to different reasons, they are prone to vulnerabilities during the journey."

He further added that Afghan refugees are plagued with major linguistic barriers — they communicate either in Farsi (Persian) or Pashto.

Following the return of the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
to power in August 2021, thousands of Afghans fled the country fearing persecution and death threats from the Taliban regime. These migrants colonists moved mostly to the neighboring countries including Iran, Pakistain, and beyond.

After Brazil, Mexico is a new destination Afghan refugees are reaching with the hope of entering the United States through illegal channels. These Afghan migrants colonists are risking their lives throughout the journey to reach Mexico, and eventually to the US.

Surge in terrorism

Over the past few months, the law and order situation in the country has worsened, with terrorist groups executing attacks with near impunity across the country.

Since the talks with the TTP broke down in November, the Death Eater group has intensified its attacks, particularly targeting the police in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and areas bordering Afghanistan. Insurgents in Balochistan

According to statistics released by the Pakistain Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, an Islamabad-based think-tank, January 2023 remained one of the deadliest months since July 2018, as 134 people bit the dust — a 139 per cent spike — and 254 received injuries in at least 44 Death Eater attacks across the country.

Unknown saboteurs set fire to Mar Korkis church in Baghdad
[Shafaq News] Unknown perpetrators set fire to the door of the Mar Korkis Church in Baghdad on Wednesday, prompting an investigation by Iraqi security forces.

The church, located in the Dora neighborhood of the Iraqi capital, has roots in history that date back to the 7th century, when it was first established. It was subsequently rebuilt several times, with the current structure dating back to the early 20th century.

This is not the first time that Christian sites or figures in Iraq have been targeted by acts of violence. In recent years, there have been numerous incidents of churches and other religious buildings being attacked, including a bombing at a Catholic church in Baghdad in 2010 that left dozens dead and scores injured.

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group, which once controlled large parts of Iraq, has been known to systemically target Christians and other religious minorities in the country. The group has been responsible for numerous attacks on churches and other Christian sites, as well as the abduction and murder of Christians.

The latest incident at the Mar Korkis Church underscores the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Iraq. The Iraqi government has vowed to protect the country's Christian population, but incidents such as this serve as a reminder that much work remains to be done to ensure their safety and security.

Iraq's CTS finds bodies of ISIS members, seizes weapons
[Shafaq News] On Wednesday, the Iraqi forces destroyed ISIS hideouts and killed members of the terrorist organization on the outskirts of Saladin Governorate.

The Iraqi Security Media Cell stated, "Based on information from the Intelligence Service Agency, the Iraqi Air Force struck ISIS strongholds within the Palkana Mountains of Saladin Governorate."

As a result, a force from the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) conducted an inspection operation in the area and found three bodies of terrorists, in addition to equipment, including weapons, mobile phones, and documents.

It is worth noting that ISIS terrorist gangs are active in many areas of Saladin due to security gaps.

Terrorist organization frequently attacks security forces and citizens and kidnaps people.

In turn, the Iraqi army forces, the Popular Mobilization Forces, and the Peshmerga launched several joint and separate operations against ISIS, which resulted in the death of many prominent leaders and the destruction of their strongholds in the so-called the" Triangle of Death" among the governorates of Diyala, Saladin, and Kirkuk.

Settlers hurl stones at home of Hebron Palestinian activist; several detained by IDF
[IsraelTimes] No injuries reported in attack against Issa Amro; video appears to show soldiers standing by during assault, army says footage partial

A group of Israeli settlers hurled stones at the home of a Paleostinian activist muppet in the West Bank city of Hebron on Wednesday, footage showed, before some were detained by soldiers.

The footage shared by the activist muppet, Issa Amro, on Twitter showed Israeli soldiers apparently standing by as the settlers pelted the home with stones and bottles.

The Israel Defense Forces said the footage was partial and "does not represent the complete conduct of the forces in the field."

"You can clearly see soldiers who are at the very heart of the attack but do not act to stop the attackers," the dovish Breaking the Silence organization said in a statement.

Soldiers are legally permitted — even required in some cases — to intervene to prevent violent mostly peaceful attacks, regardless of nationality. The military generally prefers that police deal with the attacks and settler arrests, but police forces are stretched thin in the West Bank.

The IDF said troops and Border Police officers worked to break up the "friction," stop the stone-throwing and detain suspects.

Another clip showed soldiers rushing to the scene. According to the IDF, the troops detained a number of suspects allegedly involved in the attack, and handed them over to police for further questioning.

Nobody was reported hurt in the Hebron attack.

There has been a noted rise in settler attacks against Paleostinians, as well as Israeli security forces, following a string of recent terror attacks.

Amro is a prominent activist muppet who lives alongside the Jewish settlement in Hebron.

He was assaulted by an IDF soldier in Hebron last month, who was later sentenced to 10 days in military prison.

In November, Amro filmed an Israeli soldier in Hebron taunting him and other activist muppets. A second clip from the same incident showed another soldier assaulting a left-wing activist muppet. Both soldiers were given short jail sentences.

Amro is a longtime critic of both Israel and the Paleostinian Authority who has faced charges in both Israeli and Paleostinian courts. In 2017, Amro spent a week in a Paleostinian prison for his criticism of PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
...aka Abu Mazen, a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial. While no Yasser Arafat, he has his own brand of evil, just a little more lowercase....
.

During a recent court hearing, a police representative testified against Amro, calling him a provocateur who "creates friction" in Hebron with his tours for Israelis and others in the city.

Amro’s home is often a regular stop for those touring Hebron with the left-wing Breaking the Silence NGO, which seeks to show what it says are the human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
costs of Israel’s military presence in the largely Paleostinian city.

The Hebron activist muppet sat down with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken last year during the top diplomat’s meeting with Paleostinian civil society leaders in the West Bank.

Settler attacks against Paleostinians have been on the rise in recent weeks, including unprecedented rioting in the West Bank town of Huwara on February 26 that led to multiple injuries and one death, hours after a Paleostinian terrorist opened fire on an Israeli vehicle driving through the town, killing two brothers inside.

PA security forces fire tear gas at Huwara terrorist’s funeral in Nablus
[IsraelTimes] Hundreds march through West Bank city’s streets with coffin, some calling Paleostinian forces and other officials ’hookers’ and ’spies’ for Israel

Paleostinian security forces in the West Bank fired tear gas Wednesday at mourners attending the funeral of a Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terrorist killed by Israeli forces, as they rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the Paleostinian Authority.

Hundreds marched through the streets of the northern West Bank city of Nablus for the funeral of Abdel Fatah Hussein Kharousha, 49, killed a day earlier along with five other Paleostinians during an intense shootout with Israeli troops in Jenin.

The Shin Bet security agency said Kharousha, a Hamas member from the Askar refugee camp near Nablus, was the terrorist who opened fire on an Israeli car driving through the town of Huwara on February 26, killing Israeli brothers Hallel and Yagel Yaniv.

Hamas’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, called him a "heroic martyr."

As mourners carried the body of Kharousha through Nablus, some shouted insulting slogans against the Paleostinian security forces and other officials, calling them "hookers" and "spies" for Israel.

Paleostinian officers fired tear gas and stun grenades, an AFP correspondent said, and the body was taken in an ambulance.

Paleostinian security service front man Talal Dweikat said that officers had intervened when an argument broke out after "a group unrelated to the martyr’s family kidnapped the body and lowered it to the ground," Paleostinian news agency Wafa reported.

"An altercation occurred while they were chanting against the [Paleostinian] National Authority and the security services, instead of cursing the [Israeli] occupation that committed crimes against our people," Dweikat added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
in Jenin, crowds marched through the streets during the funerals of the five other Paleostinians killed on Tuesday, all men in their 20s affiliated with gangs who apparently took part in the exchanges of fire Tuesday. Masked button men were among the thousands of mourners.

Member of Iran’s militia killed in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

[NPASyria] On Tuesday, a member of the Iranian-backed militias was killed by unidentified button men in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

A military source said that unknown button men riding a cycle of violence, opened fire on a vehicle belonging to Liwa Abu al-Fadhal al-Abbas — Iranian-backed militia — in the countryside of the town of al-Masrab, west of Deir ez-Zor.

The source added that the incident resulted in the killing of a member of the militia, however, the attackers managed to escape.

(ISIS) sleeper cells, which continue to attack the government forces and Iranian-backed militias in the Syrian Badia by planting IEDs and setting ambushes.

On Jan. 23, the Syrian government forces found the bodies of gunnies of Iranian-backed militias who were arrested a few days ago by attackers bearing flags of ISIS in the town of al-Masrab, west of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria.

ISIS remnants claim civilian’s life in Deir ez-Zor

[NPASyria] On Tuesday, a civilian lost his life in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, as a result of a mine explosion of the war remnants of the Islamic State

(ISIS).

A local source from the town of al-Baghiliya, west of Deir ez-Zor, said that Abbas al-Ari’er killed as a result of a mine explosion of ISIS remnants while he was roaming in his farmland.

War remnants have been abundantly distributed in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor that was ISIS last stronghold. They pose a great risk to the lives of the civilians.

On March 4, a soldier of the Syrian government forces and a civilian were killed in a kaboom of two landmines, most likely left by ISIS, in the southern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Since early 2023, landmines and war remnants have harmed about 220 people, of which about 80 were killed and injured in Deir ez-Zor, according to the Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press.

The process of demining in northeast Syria region is carried out by Roj Mine Control Organization (RMCO), a local non-governmental and non-profit organization established in late 2016, in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

Turkish-backed SNA on alert in Syria’s Afrin

front).

Exclusive sources told North Press that the military alert status came after orders by the Levant Front (Jabhat al-Shamiya), a faction of the Ottoman Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), to the command of the military police, Ahmad Kabso, to search for members of the HTS in the city.

The military police deployed its forces in the neighborhoods of al-Vilat, al-Ashrafiyeh, and Mazout Street and inspected cars in the city.

On February 22, Ottoman Turkish forces installed a checkpoint on the Azaz-Afrin road, in northwest Syria, amid military mobilization between Ottoman Turkish-backed factions and a group affiliated with HTS.

Afrin and its countryside have been under the occupation of the Ottoman Turkish forces and the SNA factions since March 2018 following the so-called "Olive Branch" military operation that was launched allegedly to push away the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) under the pretext of protecting "Ottoman Turkish national security."

The operation caused the displacement of about 300.000 of the original inhabitants of the Kurds of Afrin who have been taking shelter in 42 villages and five camps in Aleppo northern countryside, locally known as Shahba Region, since then.

Turkish-backed SNA militants chop 94 trees in Syria’s Afrin

[NPASyria] Ottoman Turkish-backed armed Syrian opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA), cut down 94 trees in the countryside of Afrin north of Aleppo, northwest Syria, Afrin Post website said on Tuesday.

Militants of Sultan Muhammad al-Fateh cut down 40 olive trees, which belong to Hassan Rashid, a resident of the village of Baadina, on Baadina-Demlio route in Rajo district, according to the website.

On March4, armed Death Eaters cut down 50 olive trees and four nut ones, which are owned by the forcibly displaced Muhammad Osman from the village of Saarinjak in Sharran district, near Nebi Huri ancient site.

The Afrin Post also confirmed that Death Eaters of Hamza Division cut 40 olive trees in Jindires district west of Afrin after their owner refused to give them firewood for free ten days ago.

After the occupation of Afrin, thousands of olive trees have been cut down by the SNA factions, according to press and human rights

Four Israeli F-16 aircrafts targeted Aleppo airport – Khmeimim
[NPASyria] The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria said on Wednesday that four Israeli F-16 aircrafts of the Israeli Air Force launched on Aleppo International Airport a day earlier.
That’d be this and this.
Deputy head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation, Oleg Gurinov, said in a briefing that the tarmac and radar of the airport sustained damage as a result of the bombing and that the airport has temporarily been put out of service.

At dawn on Tuesday, Aleppo International Airport was hit by Israeli Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s. An Israeli research center said the assault may have targeted Iranian positions at the Nayrab military compound inside Aleppo’s airport.

Israel has repeatedly struck Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah positions in Syria, but rarely acknowledges doing so as part of a policy of not commenting on such attacks.

Daraa: 6 drug traffickers and a Hezbollah hard boy toes up
Two people work in drug trafficking killed in eastern Daraa

[NPASyria] On Wednesday, two people of a drug trafficking group were killed, one of whom was the leader of the group, by unknown button men in Daraa eastern countryside, south Syria.

A local source told North Press, "Fayez al-Radi [the leader of the group] and Musa al-Sharif were killed after being targeted by unknown button men riding a cycle of violence in the town of al-Taebah in Daraa eastern countryside."

"Al-Radi and al-Sharif hail from the town of Nassib in eastern Daraa. Both worked in a drug trafficking group," the source added.

On Saturday, the Eighth Brigade, affiliated with the military intelligence of Syrian government forces, launched a campaign against the groups of Fayez al-Radi and Ismael al-Qaddah, who are leaders of drug rings. The festivities reportedly killed four button men of both groups.

4 people killed in Syria’s Daraa for drug trafficking

[NPASyria] Four people were killed in festivities between the Eighth Brigade, affiliated with the military intelligence of Syrian government forces, and groups working in drug trafficking in the eastern countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press that Raed al-Radi, Odai al-Zoghbi, Ali al-Abed and Anwar al-Rifai were killed in festivities took place in the town of Umm al-Mayathin, in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

On March 6, military groups, belonging to the Eighth Brigade, raided a number of towns in the eastern countryside of Daraa, in search for people involved in the drug trade.

In 2018, the Eighth Brigade, which is backed by Russia, was established out of the remnants of the Shabaab al-Sunna faction headed by Ahmad al-Awda of the Syrian opposition during its control of southern Syria.

The killed people used to work for the groups of Fayez al-Radi and Ismail al-Kadah who are charged with working in drug trafficking, according to the source.

Hamid al-Mejareesh aka Abu Karem Mejareesh, a leader of a group affiliated with the Eighth Brigade, was also injured, the source added.

The source noted that the festivities calmed down after notables of the area intervened to prevent more casualties and material loses.

The Eighth Brigade seized large amounts of drugs that were found in a house inhabited by the members of Fayez al-Radi group, in the Umm al-Mayathin, the source added.

On March 4, festivities erupted between the Eighth Brigade and the Fayez al-Radi group. As a result, Muhammad al-Hariri, affiliated with Fayez al-Radi group, was killed.

Over the past years, this region has witnessed continuous smuggling of narcotics into Jordanian territory, as the Jordanian army periodically announces the seizure of quantities of captagon pills and other drugs.

Several international reports, headed by the US Treasury, accuse the Syrian government and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia of running large drug trafficking networks in this border area, as well as other Syrian regions.

Syrian Hezbollah militant found dead in Syria’s Daraa

[NPASyria] On Wednesday, locals found the body of a holy warrior affiliated with the Lebanese Hezbollah militias in the countryside of Daraa, south Syria.

Local sources told North Press that the locals found the body of "Muhammad Youssef al-Mazawi" with gunshot wounds near the town of Dael in the central countryside of Daraa.

The sources added that al-Mazawi is "a Shiite who hails from the city of Busra al-Sham in eastern Daraa and a holy warrior of the Lebanese Hezbollah."

Al-Mazawi had joined ranks of forces that fought against opposition factions when they attempted to control Busra al-Sham in March 2015.

He escaped like all Shiite people in the city after the opposition took control after a week-long battle.

It is not clear how he arrived in Daraa and was killed.

Busra al-Sham used to be inhabited by dozens of Shia families before protests erupted against the Syrian government in 2011. They all left with the government forces that withdrew after the opposition took control.

In July 2018, opposition factions and Syrian government forces reached an agreement, mediated by Russia, for the opposition-held areas of Daraa.

According to the deal, opposition Lions of Islam who agreed to hand over heavy weapons, were handed special cards to protect them from prosecution, and allowed to stay in Daraa. Those opposed to the agreement were forced to leave for Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS — formerly al-Nusra

Front).

Since the settlement agreement in Daraa, there has been unstable security amid constant liquidations. The region in southern Syria has witnessed a flourishing drug business and increasing ISIS sleeper cells’ activity.

Drone strike on Iran-backed militia warehouse in Syria kills seven: Monitor
[Rudaw] Seven people died Wednesday when a fresh dronezap targeted the warehouse of an Iran-backed militia in the eastern Syria, a war monitor reported, adding that 15 others, including civilians, were maimed.

The strike in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province was not immediately attributed to anyone but it occurred in a place where the US and Israel have previously carried out attacks and where pro-Iran

militias maintain a significant presence.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) war monitor said that a total of seven people, including "three Syrians, three non-Syrians, and an unidentified man" were killed in the strike, while 15 others were maimed.

In late January, an Iran-backed commander alongside two of his escorts were killed in a series of dronezaps while the militia leader was investigating a site -also in Deir ez-Zor province- that was the site of a prior attack on Iran-backed forces. The strikes were not claimed by any entity.

(ISIS) terror group has also previously conducted strikes around the area, similarly targeting fighters affiliated to Iran.

According to statistics from SOHR, 16 Iran-backed Syrian and non-Syrian murderous Moslems were killed by "aerial and ground attacks" in February.
Al Ahram’s take on the story, demonstrating the fog o’war:
A dronezap killed four people in government-held eastern Syria on Wednesday in an area theoretically under Syrian government control, a war monitor said.

"Four people were killed and eight maimed in a dronezap near a weapons factory band near a truck loaded with weapons," Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP.

The Observatory, which is based in the UK , could not immediately clarify who carried out the strike in the eastern city of Deir Ezzor.

It targeted a part of the city that controlled by Iran-backed factions and is home to residences of top Iranian commanders and senior officers of Lebanon Hezbollahstan

factions aligned with the Syrian government are heavily deployed south and west of the Euphrates River which runs through Deir Ezzor province.

A landmine went kaboom! in the same neighbourhood, causing casualties, the official Syrian agency SANA reported.

"A number of citizens were killed and maimed when a landmine planted by forces of Evil went kaboom! in the al-Hamidiya neighbourhood of Deir Ezzor," SANA said.

Deir Ezzor is an important border crossings connecting Iraq to Syria .

In January, eleven people were killed in this region during a series of Arclight airstrike
s.

Wednesday's attack followed a series of unclaimed dronezaps on January 30 that targeted a suspected convoy in the province and killed 11 people, including a pro-Iranian commander, the Observatory said at the time.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, including attacks on the Damascus and Aleppo airports, but it rarely acknowledges or discusses the operations.

The latest, attributed to Israel by Syria, dated Tuesday, when warplanes struck Aleppo airport, in the north of the country, causing significant damage that halted flights to and from Syria's war- and quake-battered second city, the defence ministry said.
And NPA Syria:
Seven militants of Iranian-backed militias were killed and ten others were wounded on Wednesday in an unknown aerial attack on the polyclinics building of the militias in the city center of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria.

A military source from the Syrian government forces said an unknown flight targeted with two missiles the polyclinics building that is run by Iranian-backed militias in al-Hamidiya neighborhood.

The attack resulted in the killing of three Iranian-backed militants and four others, whose identity has not been realized being military personnel or civilians, and the wounding of ten others as an initial toll, according to the source.

The source suggested that the shelling most likely occurred due to a truck laden with logistic materials for the Iranian-backed militants that was parked in front of the polyclinics building on Tuesday and was guarded by Iranian-backed militants.
Afghan Digest adds this interesting rumour:
Some IRGC personnel are thought to be among the dead after a drone strike on a Syrian arms factory.
The Times of Israel chimes in, because everyone is interested in this one, it seems:
A local activist collective, Deir Ezzor 24, reported that the building was used as base for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Syrian state media, however, claimed that a mine “left by terrorists” — a term often used by the government for opposition forces battling Assad’s side in the war — detonated in the area, killing three people and wounding seven.

The state media reports showed photographs of a building with several floors collapsed and reduced to rubble, as well as a destroyed truck.
