Kenya steps up efforts to counter Al-Shabaab infiltration
[Garowe] The Kenya Defence Forces [KDF] have stepped up efforts to secure the country following increasing cases of al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
, with top Generals now visiting various formations to motivate them in the fight against the group which has in the recent weeks infiltrated northeastern and North coast.

On Wednesday, 8th Brigade Commander, Brigadier David Chesire, in the company of Artillery Brigade Commander Brigadier M. Mwenga, visited soldiers serving in Operation Amani Boni [OAB] which saw them interact with troops in Witu and General Service Officers in Pandanguo..

The multi-agency security teams have been combing through Boni Forest, a serious al-Shabaab hot spot due to proximity to Somalia through Ras Kamboni. Early this week, three soldiers were killed after an IED explosion as they rushed to rescue GSU troops who had been ambushed.

Brigadier Chesire’s visit to the various Forward Operation Bases [FOBs] provided an opportunity to directly connect with the OAB troops involved in bringing stability to the region. In an address to the troops, he emphasized the importance of their dedication to protecting the illusory sovereignty of the nation, KDF reported.

"Our unity, resilience, and unwavering dedication will not go in vain. Let us soldier on, remain steadfast in our commitment to protect the innocent, preserve peace, and uphold the values that define us," the commander said, noting that soldiers serving in Northern Frontier Districts will endeavor to protect Kenyans from external attacks.

During his trip, Brigadier Chesire also highlighted the significance of fostering community bonds through Civil-military Co-operation and Key Leadership Engagement, as these elements contribute to the overall success of operations.

Brigadier Mwenga echoed the sentiments of the 8th Brigade Commander and commended the multi-agency approach employed to combat insecurity in the region. He expressed appreciation for the troops emphasizing the importance of professionalism in fostering a positive and collaborative working environment.

"You’ve shown an immense sense of comradeship. Let us uphold the principles of professionalism as we all bring different capacities and expertise on board," said Brigadier Mwenga.

For the last three weeks, al-Shabaab Death Eaters have heightened attacks in Northeastern Kenya and Lamu, mostly targeting members of security forces. Apparently, so far over 12 security officers have been killed, leading to pressure from locals and other stakeholders, who are calling for concerted effort in al-Shabaab crackdown.

The al-Shabaab Death Eaters are under serious onslaught from Somalia and the launch of the second phase of operations in Jubaland and Southwest could see more of them trying to sneak to the country. Defence Minister Aden Duale, who visited Garissa this week, insisted that the soldiers will pursue al-Shabaab even into the interior of Somalia.

Sudanese army repels SPLM-N attack in South Kordofan
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The Sudanese army repulsed an assault by the SPLM-N on the city of Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state, according to an official statement on Wednesday.

Following the fall of the Bashir regime, the conflict between the Sudanese army and the rebel group subsided under the regular renewal of the cessation of hostilities. As part of its commitment to peace, the Civilian Transitional Government permitted direct entry of humanitarian aid into the rebel-controlled area from Sudanese territory.

The 54th Infantry Brigade stationed in Kadugli faced "a treacherous attack by the SPLM, despite the annually renewed ceasefire agreement with the Sudanese government," said the army on Wednesday.

The statement further affirmed that government forces successfully repelled the attack, inflicting heavy losses upon the assailants while also acknowledging some casualties among their ranks.

The assault coincides with Sudan’s military engagement against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum and Darfur. At the same time, military commanders mobilize infantry from various provinces to participate in the ongoing urban warfare in the capital.

Local sources in Kadugli confirmed the attack and anticipated the escalation of hostilities in South Kordofan. Reports from the area mention separate festivities in the Dilling town, which were not reported in the Sudanese army’s statement.

In statements to Sudan tribune, Mohammed Yusef al-Mustafa, a prominent member of the SPLM-N al-Hilu, denied their forces’ involvement in the Dilling attack.

"While our movement did not partake in these festivities, it does not negate our right to respond to any attacks against the Nuba people in areas controlled by the army," emphasized al-Mustafa.

The military coup d’état on October 25, 2021, disrupted the ongoing peace talks in Juba aimed at resolving the protracted conflict in the Nuba Mountains, which erupted in June 2011.

Arabia
Shabwah tribes officially tear away from Southern Transitional Council
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] The tribes of Shabwah province announced on Wednesday their disengagement from the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) project.

The so-called "Shabwah Sons and Tribes Alliance" welcomed in a statement it issued today the formation of the so-called "Hadhramaut National Council" established by Riyadh as an outcome of the meetings organised by the Hadhrami components there since May 21.

The statement emphasised that the Shabwah tribes support the "Hadhrami vision" in the Hadhramaut people’s management of their local affairs in terms of capabilities and wealth.

The alliance statement called on the people and components of Shabwah to take a similar approach to managing their province according to a consensual vision that represents the entitlements of all the people of Shabwah, in coordination with the various concerned authorities at home and abroad.

The statement considered Shabwah and Hadhramaut "an intertwined fabric," and said that "their supreme interest and history brought them together."

Over 41 dead in gang violence, fire at Honduras women's prison
[The Nation (Pak)] At least 41 people were killed Tuesday night at a women’s prison in Honduras, where violent mostly peaceful festivities between rival gangs sparked a fire that tore through part of the facility, police said.

The deadly unrest rocked the prison some 25 kilometers (about 15 miles) north of the capital Tegucigalpa, according to police front man Edgardo Barahona, who put the "preliminary" corpse count at 41 women, though it was unclear if they were all inmates.

Five other women were maimed and taken to hospital, Barahona added.

Hundreds of relatives of incarcerated women gathered outside the detention facility awaiting information about their loved ones. "We don’t know who the victims are," said one visibly distraught man.

Heavily armed soldiers and police were seen entering and guarding the prison, while firefighter teams were also on the scene. According to Delma Ordonez, who represents inmate relatives, members of a gang had entered the cell of a rival group and set it on fire.

13 Azerbaijani citizens arrested for participation in a terrorist organization
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Citizens of Azerbaijan accused of involvement in illegal armed groups in Syria have been arrested.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 14, the Baku court passed a sentence on members of the radical group "Army of Allah" in Syria,
...probably Jundullah, founded in Idlib by Jabal al-Turkman in 2015, reduced to an estimated 40 members by 2021 when Al Nusra invited them to either join or be dissolved...
Vasif Einiev and Shikhzade Mammadov. Both were sentenced to seven years in prison, despite repentance.

According to the prosecution, Einiev and Mammadov went to the Syrian city of Idlib, where they joined the group, in which until February 2022 they participated in battles and carried out guard duty. They were arrested in January at the airport on their return to Baku from Syria.

According to the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, 13 arrested citizens participated in the fighting as part of an illegal armed group and were trained in a special camp in the city of Idlib. Initially, they were put on the wanted list. These are Shamil Abdullayev, Murad Agametov, Murad Guliyev, Farhad Rustamov, Sultan Sultanov, Nejmaddin Huseynov, Hikmet Makhmudov, Mais Aliyev, Ismail Ismailov, Shahriyar Babayev, Gadzhi Muradov, Alovsar Bakhyshov, Intigam Asadov. They were delivered to Azerbaijan within the framework of the procedure of mutual legal assistance on the international wanted list, the State Security Service said, which was translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The detainees are charged under Article 283-1.3 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (creation of stable groups for the purpose of participating in armed conflicts outside the borders of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participation in these groups, exercises or armed conflicts). Under this article, the defendants face a prison sentence of nine to 12 years.

The State Security Service distributed a six-minute video with testimonies and repentances of the arrested. One of them, Farhad Rustamov, reports that he went to Syria through Turkey with his son, telling his wife that he was taking his son to study at the university. During the fighting, Rustamov's son died. Murad Agametov said that he was invited to Syria by a certain Abu-Khalil, whom he met on Telegram.

"I went first to Turkey. Then I moved to Syria, where Abu Khalil met me at the border. After training in the camp, we began to participate in hostilities," says Agametov.

Representatives and lawyers of those arrested were unavailable for comment.

Fresh rescues off Spain's Canaries after fatal migrant shipwreck
[AlAhram] Spanish authorities rescued nearly 170 migrants colonists from three boats drifting off the Canary Islands overnight on Wednesday, hours after at least two people died when their packed dinghy sank in the area.

Spain's coasties saved 53 migrants colonists "in good condition" near the island of Lanzarote and another 61, including a mother and her baby, near the island of Gran Canaria, local emergency services said in a tweet.

The migrants colonists found near Gran Canaria were all taken to hospital for "mild conditions", it added.

Spain's coasties intercepted another boat early on Thursday with 54 migrants colonists "in good condition" on board near Lanzarote, emergency services said.

The rescue operations came after a dinghy carrying migrants colonists sank about 160 kilometres (100 miles) southeast of Gran Canaria.

The Spanish coasties found the body of a minor and later than of a man in the area.

A Moroccan patrol boat rescued 24 people, according to Spain's coasties, which said it did not know how many people were missing.

PERILOUS CROSSING
But Spanish non-profit group Walking Borders -- which monitors migrant boats to try to help them and receives calls from people on the boats or their relatives -- said 39 people had died, including four women and a baby.

The group's founder, Helena Maleno, said the migrants colonists had waited for over 12 hours for assistance.

Spain is a major gateway for migrants colonists seeking a better life in Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and the number of boats heading for the Canaries from northwestern African has increased in recent days due to favourable weather conditions.

Over 1,500 migrants colonists arrived in the Canaries during the first two weeks of June, according to interior ministry figures.

The migrant route from West Africa to the Canary Islands across the Atlantic has become more popular in recent years as authorities have cracked down on illegal migration in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Atlantic is notorious for strong currents that make such trips perilous.

Over 11,200 people have died or disappeared since 2018 while trying to reach Spain by sea, according to a report published by Walking Borders at the end of 2022.

Greece saves 145 migrants stranded on river islet along Turkish border
[AlAhram] Greek authorities said they rescued 145 migrants colonists found stranded Thursday on a small islet on the river that runs along the northeastern land border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
Police said that the 70 men, 45 women and 30 children were all in good health and identified as Syrians or Kurds. Greek authorities launched the rescue after being alerted to the migrants colonists' presence by a nongovernmental organization.

The Evros River — Meric in Ottoman Turkish — is a key crossing point for migrants colonists coming through Turkey to seek a better life in the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
It's quite common for smuggling gangs to dump migrants colonists on islets mid-river and flee to avoid arrest by Greek authorities.

Thousands of people also try to enter Greece by sea. On June 14, a battered fishing trawler carrying up to 750 people sank far off southwestern Greece, with only 104 survivors.

The ship had left Libya for Italia, and Greece's coasties has been widely criticized for failing to rescue the migrants colonists before their vessel capsized and sank.
Dawn adds:
There were at least 209 Pak "victims" on an overloaded boat that capsized and sank in open seas off Greece last week, according to data shared by the Federal Investigation Agency with Rooters on Thursday.

Witness accounts suggested that between 400 and 750 people had crammed onto the 20- to 30 metre-long (65- to 100-foot) fishing boat which then capsized and sank early on June 14 about 50 miles (80 km) from the southern coastal town of Pylos.

The official corpse count from the accident still stands at 82 and the number of survivors at 104, of whom 12 were Paks.

Hundreds of people from different countries are believed to have been on board the vessel, in what is seen as the worst sea disaster in years for the region.

The FIA told Rooters today that the figure of 209 Pak victims aboard is based on information provided by families who came forward to say a relative of theirs had boarded the boat heading from Libya towards Greece and were still missing.

"An investigation to verify this is underway," FIA Islamabad Zone Director Rana Abdul Jabbar said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats grabbed for his rosco...
the government is yet to officially confirm how many of its citizens were on the boat, but kick-started a DNA sampling effort to help Greece identify those who died.

The data shared by the FIA showed that 181 people were from Pakistain and 28 from Azad Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
. Officials gathered the DNA samples from 201 families.

Egyptian man arrested in London on suspicion of smuggling of migrants into Italy
[AlAhrqm] An Egyptian man suspected of organising the smuggling of thousands of people aboard "death traps" from North Africa into Italia has been arrested in London, British police said on Thursday.

The 40-year-old Egyptian man was detained in west London near Heathrow Airport on Wednesday, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said, after an investigation involving Italian police.

The NCA has not released yet the details involving the identity of the Egyptian man.

The NCA said the man in London was linked to a number of illegal Mediterranean crossings in the past year, including from Libya, and was working from a UK base with criminal associates.

Three of the crossings required rescues by the Italian coastguard for vessels in distress, each of which was carrying more than 600 people, the UK agency said.

"The type of boats organised crime groups use for crossings are death traps, and sadly many people have died after incidents in the Mediterranean, which demonstrates the level of danger," senior NCA officer Darren Barr said.

"We will continue to share intelligence and take action with partners to prevent crossings and arrest people smugglers here and overseas," he said.

The arrest comes after nine Egyptians were arrested in Greece earlier this week in connection with a Mediterranean migrant boat disaster that killed at least 82 people with many others presumed dead at sea.

FIA makes arrests in crackdown on human smugglers
[The Nation (Pak)] A day of mourning was observed in the country on Monday over hundreds of deaths of Pakistani migrants colonists in the ship sinking incident near coast of Greece on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday appealed for observing the day of mourning. The national flag kept hoisting at half-mast today and special prayers were offered for the deceased persons.

The Pak authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of the deaths. But some media reports claimed that more than 300 Pakistani nationals were killed in the sinking of an overcrowded fishing trawler. Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani confirmed around 300 deaths in a tweet.

Pakistain is in the midst of its worst economic crisis in decades, with efforts to secure a financial lifeline from the International Monetary Fund complicated by political turmoil in the country. Growth has stalled and inflation has soared in the country of 220 million over the past year. The country has struggled to import essential food products, leading to deadly stampedes at distribution centers.

She further said, "Pakistain and Afghan Interim Government are in constant engagement and dialogue with respect to the terrorist threat that Pakistain faces. Large-Scale Operation Nets 15 Wanted Terrorists, Military Intelligence Says
[Shafaq News] Iraq's Military Intelligence Directorate on Thursday said that 15 persons with ties to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) bully boy group has been captured in a series of security operations in several Iraqi governorates.

These operations, according to an official statement, were carried out in three governorates.

The arrestees are listed as 'wanted' by judicial authorities, as per the statement.

"In a meticulously coordinated effort, relying on precise intelligence inputs from the 7th, 10th, 15th, 16th, and 21st divisions of the Military Intelligence Directorate, a series of strategic ambushes were executed across the provinces of Nineveh, Saladin, and al-Anbar," the statement read.

The operations unfolded across several geographical locations including the district of Baj and the areas of Rashad and Aytha, the security posts of Martyr Sabha
...After the Libyan Civil War, Sabha grew in importance as a slave auctioning town. However, an investigation by the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) revealed that while there was illegal slavery, reports were exaggerated, as slave auctions were rare and not made public. This was a great comfort to everyone but the slaves peddled in secret. The city was later seized by forces loyal to the Libyan National Army (LNA) and its leader Khalifa Haftar in January 2019, probably for its collection of MiG-25 aircraft....

... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
The operation culminated in the apprehension of 15 wanted terrorists, sought under the stringent provisions of Article 4 relating to terrorism.

The Military Intelligence Directorate said that the apprehended individuals have been handed over to the relevant authorities in full compliance with legal protocols.

3 people killed, including child, woman in Syria's Daraa
[NPASYRIA] Since Wednesday evening, three people were killed in separate incidents, including a woman, in the countryside of Daraa Governorate, south Syria.

A local source told North Press that Aida al-Hoshan was rubbed out by unknown button men who raided her house in the town of Mahjah, in the northern countryside of Daraa.

Al-Hoshan is accused by the town’s residents of cooperating with officers of the government forces and helping them to hand over a number of young men wanted for compulsory and reserve service.

The source said that Ahmad al-Jawani also was killed and his brother Rashid was maimed as unknown button men attacked them near the town of al-Shajara in the western countryside of Daraa.

The two brothers are civilians and they have never joined any armed military party, the source added.

The source suggested that the attackers of the two brothers might be bandidos who aimed to steal the brother’s car.

In a separate incident, Youssef al-Halqi, 12, was killed by a stray bullet after bandidos gunnies of a local gang opened fire on unknown assailants who targeted the group’s leader’s house in the city of Jasim, in the western countryside of Daraa.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with daily liquidations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, as well as the spread of thefts.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a cease-fire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas of Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa. Those who opposed the agreement were sent to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

Sources from the Civil Police in Sere Kaniye, affiliated with the Ottoman Turkish backed Syrian National Army (SNA), said that Ottoman Turkish border guards opened fire on a group of civilians while they were trying to cross the border from Tel Halaf, west of Sere Kaniye, at around 2 am. As a result, young man named Abdul Karim Khoja was killed and three others were maimed.

He added that the locals were able to drag the injured and transport them in their cars to the Ras al-Ain Hospital.

In mid-June, a woman and a young man were shot by Ottoman Turkish border guards for the same reason in the countryside of Ras al-Ain.
