Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief July 13, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS TOLD TO STAY HOME – Late reporting and traffic on social media outlets suggest the Taliban may be suspending kindergarten schooling for children. Not long after the Taliban’s Ministry of Education announced it was closing Teacher Training Centers across the country and reassigning the staff members to schools, reports began to arrive that the Ministry of Labor had informed local leaders that kindergarten programs were being shut down. A letter that has been attributed to the Ministry of Labor announced that nearly 500 kindergarten teachers were to be dismissed. We assess this letter is authentic and constitutes a new nationwide policy. Some protests will likely take place as the new policy is put in place.

  • EUROPEAN UNION DELIVERS ALMOST 100 TONS OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES – The EU has been operating its ‘Humanitarian Air Bridge’ since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. The flights deliver medication and medical equipment to struggling NGOs and hospitals across the country. The latest flight is the 29th to reach Afghanistan under this program.

  • DEATH OF TTP LEADER ‘TARIQ’ CONFIRMED IN KUNAR PROVINCE – Previous reporting indicated the notorious mastermind behind multiple terror attacks in both Afghanistan and Pakistan had been killed in Kunar Province on Tuesday. Confirmation of his death was received on Wednesday. However, there has been no information provided surrounding the circumstances of his killing and who may have carried out the operation. Tariq rose to international prominence after the tragic Dasu Attack in July 2022 where 10 Chinese nationals were killed and another 26 were wounded when their bus was hit by an explosive device.

Over 50 Shaboobs, including a top leader killed in joint Danab and Jubaland raid

Garowe adds:

bandidos gunnies have been killed in a fresh operation at Weelmarow village in Lower Jubba, state media reported, in the latest crackdown targeting the group which has been wreaking havoc in the country for the last 16 years.

The operation, officials said, targeted Weelmarow village which is about 45 kilometers northeast of Afmadow town which falls under Sector II of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS]. Sector II is manned by Kenya Defence Forces [KDF] which has been operating in Lower Jubba.

During the raid, state media reported, 50 al-Shabaab bandidos gunnies were killed with dozens of others arrested by the Danab Special Forces. Furthermore, the Somali National Army [SNA] commandos with the assistance of Jubaland regional forces seized vehicles and weapons during the operation.

"Over 50 al-Shabaab bad boys, including leaders, were eliminated in the Lower Jubba region during a joint operation by security forces and local forces. Among those killed was the head of finance in the WeelMaarow area, targeted in a planned operation by Danab commandos and residents in Weel-Maarow village, approximately 45km northeast of Afmadow town," state media reported.

"The army also captured several militiamen, weapons, and vehicles. The State Media confirmed the operation and received graphic photos," the statement read, in what is a morale uplift ahead of the second phase of operations against al-Shabaab scheduled for the coming days according to Mogadishu.

The operation comes a few days after the international community led by the US Africa Command conducted three Arclight airstrike

s in the area, killing at least 10 al-Shabaab bad boys. Also, the Somali National Army had previously announced of elimination of 40 al-Shabaab bandidos gunnies in the vicinity of the village.

Al-Shabaab bandidos gunnies are increasingly getting pressure from members of the international community and local troops, forcing a number of them to down their tools and defect to the government. The al-Shabaab group is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.

Besides military operations, Somalia is also targeting al-Shabaab financiers and sympathizers across the country on top of blocking taxation channels by the group. Earlier this year, the government successfully closedown at least 250 bank accounts associated with al-Shabaab financiers and 70 mobile money transfer services.
Another Garowe article adds:
Elite Danab Special Forces have killed masterminds of the most recent bombings in Jubaland, the Ministry of Defence [MoD] has said, just moments after the army launched a raid on Al-Shabaab in Weelmarow village in Lower Jubba region.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence announced that its operations near Jilib town inflicted losses on Al-Shabaab militants, who have been on the run for the past few days. The militants have also crossed over from Somalia to Kenya given sustained operations within Somalia.

According to the ministry, Al-Shabaab lost masterminds of recent attacks in Jubaland including Farhan and his deputy, Abdi Mahad. The two are linked to waves of attacks targeting Jubaland security forces, the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS], and the US Africa Command.

"In a victorious joint operation, our Danab commandos and Jubbaland Deravishes struck hard at Al-Shabaab bases in Weel-Maarow and nearby areas. These locations, only 42 km away from the Jilib district - Alshabaab's stronghold, have been successfully reclaimed," read the message.

"In the operation, we dealt a significant blow to Alshabaab, eliminating members including key leaders and the brains behind Jubaland Bombings, Farhan and his deputy, Abdi Mahad. Our resolve is steadfast, our mission clear - eradicating terror and ensuring a peaceful Somalia."

Resident of Dagestan convicted of financing terrorism
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The court found Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov, a resident of the Khasavyurt district, guilty of assisting terrorism and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization for transferring a thousand dollars to an IS member and sentenced him to 5.5 years in prison.

A 23-year-old resident of the Khasavyurt district was found guilty of assisting terrorist activities and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization, the department of the Russian Sledkom for Dagestan reported today.

According to the investigators and the court, in October 2015, while on the territory of Dagestan, the defendant participated in the activities of an international terrorist organization, whose activities are prohibited in Russia, by providing funds to assist its members. By a court verdict, he was sentenced to five years and six months in a penal colony.

Convicted Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov transferred $1,000 as aid to members of the Islamic State (IS) international terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation, TASS reported today, citing the agency's press service.

The list of extremists and terrorists on the Rosfinmonitoring website, where Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov is listed, indicates that he was born on November 29, 1999. Therefore, at the time of the crime he was 15 years old.

The "Caucasian Knot" also wrote that the court of cassation refused to satisfy the complaint against the sentence of a native of Dagestan, Abdul Akaev, who was convicted of financing terrorism. Akayev transferred money to his brother, not knowing about his involvement in a terrorist organization, the defense pointed out.

9 soldiers embrace martyrdom as military winds up operation after ‘dastardly’ attack on Zhob garrison: ISPR
[Dawn] Nine Pakistain Army soldiers embraced martyrdom while five bad boyz were potted after security forces retaliated to a "dastardly attack" on the Zhob garrison in northern Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
on Wednesday, the military’s media affairs wing said.
For differing values of "embrace"
In a statement issued in the morning, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the snuffies launched the attack in the early hours of Wednesday, following which four soldiers were martyred and five others were maimed.

The terrorists’ initial attempt "to sneak into the facility was checked by soldiers on duty", the ISPR said, adding that they were "contained into a small area at the boundary" in the ensuing exchange of fire.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats grabbed for his rosco...
three "heavily armed terrorists" were killed and a clearance operation was initiated to apprehend the remaining two bad boys, the ISPR said.

Later, in an update shared at night, the ISPR said the clearance operation had been completed and in total, five turbans have been sent to hell".

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
it added, the five soldiers who got critically injured earlier while "fighting gallantly" had gave up the ghost and embraced martyrdom.

"Security forces and the nation remain resilient and determined to thwart all such dastardly attempts of the enemy aimed at destroying the peace of Balochistan and Pakistain," the ISPR statement read.

Earlier today, Zhob District Commissioner (DC) Azeem Kakar had told Dawn.com that a woman civilian was also killed after being caught in the crossfire while five other civilians were left injured. The official added that the severely injured were being referred to Quetta.

DC Kakar said that a passenger bus coming from Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
was also caught in the firing. He added that "nothing can be said about the number of attackers", and asserted that all departments were on alert.

INCREASE IN TERROR ATTACKS
Pakistain has seen an uptick in terror activities, especially in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, after the outlawed TTP ended its ceasefire with the government in November last year.

Earlier this month, four security personnel were martyred while a terrorist was killed after police and Levies checkposts in the Dhana Sar area of Balochistan’s Sherani subdistrict came under attack.

A report released this month by think tank Pakistain Institute for Conflict and Security Studies said the first half of the current year witnessed a steady and alarming rise in terror and suicide kabooms, claiming the lives of 389 people across the country.

In June, a police official was martyred and two more were maimed in a suicide attack on a police van in Balochistan’s Turbat.

In an earlier incident the same month, two soldiers were martyred after a security forces’ checkpost in the Kech district along the Pakistain-Iran

border came under attack.

In a presser in June, Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Maj Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that the security forces conducted 13,619 intelligence operations this year in which 1,172 bad boyz were potted or arrested.

"On a daily basis, over 77 operations are being carried out by armed forces, police, intelligence agencies, and other law enforcement agencies to rid of the menace of terrorism," he said.

DG Sharif added that 95 soldiers embraced martyrdom in these operations.
Afghan Digest’s Daily Evqcuation Brief adds:
In Balochistan, a night attack on a Pakistani security post in Zhob resulted in the deaths of 9 police and military personnel with another 15 reportedly injured. Two separate terror groups have claimed credit for the incident.

Soldier, civilian charged with terror offenses over West Bank rioting
[IsraelTimes] Yedidya Siani, 22, accused of assault on Paleostinian home containing mother, four children; David Oved, 30, indicted over vandalism at mosque where he allegedly deface Koran books

Two Israelis, one of them an off-duty soldier, were charged with terror offenses Wednesday relating to rioting last month by hundreds of settlers and their supporters as they rampaged through Paleostinian West Bank communities in the wake of a deadly terror attack.

The accused are Yedidya Siani, 22, and David Oved, 30. Oved is from the hardline West Bank settlement of Yitzhar, according to Hebrew media reports that did not give Siani’s place of residence. Siani is a soldier in the IDF.

Previous reports had said that two off-duty soldiers had been arrested over the rioting.

The incitements came following a joint investigation by the Israel Police and Shin Bet security service.

Siani was charged with an act of terror under aggravated circumstances, racially motivated assault that caused injury, and racially motivated rioting and racially motivated vandalism for his part in riots by Jewish Lions of Islam in the Paleostinian village of Umm Safa, which lies north Ramallah.

According to his indictment, filed at the Jerusalem District Court, Siani was one of a gang of masked rioters who attacked the village three weeks ago. He threw stones at Paleostinian residents and caused damage to property, prosecutors said. Then, along with other rioters, he allegedly threw stones at a home. A Paleostinian woman and her four children were inside at the time.

The rioters smashed open the door to the home with an ax and metal clubs and broke in, the indictment said. The mother hid her children in a cupboard and the bathroom, then hid herself in a side room. After the rioters left, Siani set fire to an upholstered chair that was outside the building and then moved it to the doorway, blocking the exit for those inside. As a result, two of the children suffered respiratory difficulties due to smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital for treatment and released on the same day, prosecutors said.

Siani then went on to throw more stones at another home in the village.

Prosecutors asked that both Oved and Siani be held until the end of proceedings.

Attorney Nati Rom of Honenu, representing Oved, complained that his client suffered "emotional and physical abuse" during his investigation by the Shin Bet.

The attorney also said he had not yet received the indictment.

"It is unfortunate to see that the prosecutor’s office and the Shin Bet, who fought to maintain a gag order on the investigation of my client, want to leak the indictment for media purposes," he said in a statement.

In the wake of a deadly Paleostinian terror attack on June 20, in which four Israelis were bumped off by Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,-affiliated terrorists, hundreds of settlers rampaged in Paleostinian towns and villages for five days, setting fire to homes and cars, and even opening fire in some cases. One Paleostinian was killed in unclear circumstances.

The riots have been condemned by politicians, including some from the right-wing coalition, but there has been little clear-cut condemnation from settlement leaders.

The government has pledged to hold those behind the settler rampages accountable. Four Israelis have been held under administrative detention for their involvement. Hundreds were filmed taking part in the attacks.

IDF foils attempt by Hezbollah activists to damage Lebanon border fence
[IsraelTimes] 3 members of Iran-backed terror group hurt by non-lethal blast; in separate incident, troops fire warning shots at suspects setting fires near Metula

A group of Lebanese suspects, identified as members of the Hezbollah terror group, attempted to damage Israel’s northern frontier border fence on Wednesday afternoon before fleeing after the military set off a non-lethal blast.

The incident, which appeared to be the latest in a series of Hezbollah provocations along the northern border, came on the 17th anniversary of the 2006 Second Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
War between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that troops had foiled an attempt by a number of unidentified Lebanese suspects to damage the border fence near the northern town of Zar’it. The IDF published a video showing the suspects approaching and touching the barrier before a small explosion was seen.

A security source in southern Lebanon told the AFP news agency that three Hezbollah members were "lightly" maimed in the incident. The IDF claimed it did not know the identity of the suspects, but Defense Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed they were Hezbollah members.

According to Israeli military sources, troops used a non-lethal explosive charge placed there in advance, in order to prevent such incidents of suspects attempting to damage the fence.

Gallant, before departing on an official trip to Azerbaijan, said the IDF "deterred Hezbollah activists with non-lethal means and will continue to guard the security of the State of Israel."

"Anyone who tests us will get a response," he added.

Several hours after the incident, Israeli forces fired warning shots at a group of Hezbollah activists who launched fireworks and set fires near the northern Israeli town of Metula, during a protest to mark 17 years since the month-long Second Lebanon War.

The blazes and warning shots were reported by both local Israeli and Lebanese news hounds. A military source said the fires caused a number of old landmines to explode in the area.

"The IDF will continue to prevent any attempt to violate Israeli illusory sovereignty and damage to the northern security fence," the military said in a statement.

Tensions have increased in recent weeks amid Hezbollah activity along the border, which IDF officials have branded as "provocations."

Two tents manned by armed Hezbollah members were discovered in early June on Israeli territory north of the internationally recognized border (the so-called Blue Line) in the contested Mount Dov region, also known as the Shebaa Farms. One tent was removed after Israel reportedly sent a message to Hezbollah threatening an armed confrontation if it did not remove the outpost soon.

Last week, an anti-tank missile was fired from Lebanon at the contested village of Ghajar, causing no injuries.

The boundary between Israel and Lebanon, known as the Blue Line, is marked with blue barrels along the border and is several meters from the Israeli fence in some areas, which is built entirely within Israeli territory.

The Mount Dov area where the tents were erected, also known as Shebaa Farms, was captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War and later effectively annexed along with the Golan Heights. The Lebanese government says the area belongs to Lebanon.

Israel has relayed requests via the UN to have the tents removed, while in response, Lebanon and Hezbollah have demanded that Israel withdraw from Ghajar.

Ghajar, the only Alawite-majority settlement in Israel, was part of the territory captured from Syria in 1967 and was effectively annexed by Israel in 1981 together with the Golan Heights.

Following the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 and the demarcation of the Blue Line, the village was split in two, with the northern half coming officially under Lebanese control. Israel regained control over the entire village during the Second Lebanon War in 2006, and residents have repeatedly objected to the potential division of the village and annexation of its northern half to Lebanon.

The town remained a closed military zone for more than two decades, with special permission required for nonresidents seeking to enter or exit. In September, with the construction of a barrier north of the village to block the entrance from Lebanon, access restrictions were lifted.

Hezbollah has long been the IDF’s most potent adversary on Israel’s borders, with an estimated arsenal of nearly 150,000 rockets and missiles that can reach anywhere in Israel.

6-member Palestinian cell charged in spate of recent shooting attacks, says Shin Bet
[IsraelTimes] No injuries in attacks carried out by suspects in central West Bank; soldier and officer hurt in separate clash in Turmus Ayya

The Shin Bet security agency said six Paleostinians were charged on Wednesday for a string of shooting attacks in the central West Bank in recent months, none of which caused injuries.

The Shin Bet named the members of the cell as Abdullah Hajj Muhammad, Ibrahim Naasan, Muhammad Hajj Muhammad, Majed Naasan, Ayyub Naasan, and Adb al-Karim Abu Aliya, all from the Paleostinian village of al-Mughayyir.

The six were detained within the past few months following the various attacks, mostly in the area of the West Bank settlement of Shilo. Several firearms used in the attacks were seized.

In one of the attacks, on April 21, Abdullah Hajj Muhammad, Ibrahim Naasan, and Muhammad Hajj Muhammad shot up Israeli troops near the Paleostinian town of Turmus Ayya, the Shin Bet charged.

The agency said the cell purchased firearms from a dealer in the Jenin area and was in contact with "terror elements" in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip for funding.

The Shin Bet said the button men published claims of their attacks on social media, including footage, under the name of the "Martyr Raed Naasan Group," named after a Paleostinian rioter rubbed out by Israel Defense Forces troops in al-Mughayyir in November 2022.

Indictments were filed against the six, charging them with various terror offenses, after which the Shin Bet released details of the investigation.

During the past year, Paleostinian button men have repeatedly targeted military posts, troops operating along the West Bank security barrier, Israeli settlements and civilians on the roads.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was wondering if Buck was okay. He suspected he wasn't...
on Wednesday morning, an IDF soldier and a Border Police officer were lightly hurt during festivities with Paleostinians in the West Bank town of Turmus Ayya.

The military said troops entered the town to seize some NIS 650,000 ($177,000) in cash, suspected to have been used to fund terror activities.

"During the activity, dozens of Paleostinians gathered in the area and attacked the forces, threw stones, and threw paint bottles," the IDF said.

The IDF said troops responded with riot dispersal means and live fire in the air, and detained two suspects.

One IDF soldier was taken to the hospital in good condition after being assaulted by a Paleostinian, and a Border Police officer was treated at the scene after being hit by a stone, the military said.

Early Wednesday, IDF troops detained nine wanted Paleostinians during raids across the West Bank, with violent mostly peaceful festivities in some areas, the military said.

The military has been carrying out near-nightly raids in the West Bank for the past year and a half, amid a series of deadly Paleostinian terror attacks.

The Military Police investigated the detainees and charged them with being members of a security cell. The detainees include three Kurdish men from Sere Kaniye, they worked as farmers.

The source noted that the Military Police took the detainees to the so-called "Counter-Terrorism Center" in Sere Kaniye, and then the Ottoman Turkish Intelligence forces transferred them at midnight through the Sere Kaniye gate to a prison in Sanliurfa Province, which might put them at risk of long imprisonment.
