Afghanistan
Taliban’s Grim Decree: Life Taken for a Brother’s Return – A Tragic Tale from Jawzjan Province
[8am] Local sources in Jawzjan province have reported a distressing incident in which Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
fighters killed a man’s brother after he refused their demand to return to Afghanistan from abroad. The victim, identified as Hafizullah, was a resident of Sheberghan, the center of Jawzjan.

According to the sources, on Wednesday, July 26th, Hafizullah was killed two nights ago in the presence of his wife and children, carried out by Taliban fighters. Subsequently, the lifeless body was taken away by the fighters.

Sources further revealed that Hafizullah’s brother had been employed at a foreign institution during the previous government’s rule and had sought refuge in a foreign country following the Taliban’s takeover. The Taliban had repeatedly demanded Hafizullah to establish contact with his brother and persuade him to return to the country. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
due to security threats, Hafizullah’s brother had rejected the Taliban’s request.

The family of the dear departed pleaded with the Taliban to hand over his body, but their request was met with refusal.

As of now, local Taliban officials have not made any statements regarding this incident.

This tragic event follows a similar incident in May when the Taliban killed an employee of the German institution GIZ in Kabul after holding his son hostage to force his return to Afghanistan.

Despite declaring a general amnesty, the Taliban have persistently detained, tortured, and even killed government officials, international institution workers, and other civilians and military personnel on various pretexts.

Daily Evacuation Brief July 27, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • QUESTIONS RAISED OVER HALTED US EVACUATION FLIGHTS – A recent article in the Voice of America cites anonymous sources within the Department of State who provided several explanations for the stoppage of evacuation flights since mid-June. Many Afghans who have approved SIV cases expressed concerns over the pause and have been left in limbo as to when flights will resume. No official reason was given for the action and officials failed to provide any indication of if/when flights would resume.

  • MUHARRAM CEREMONIES INVITE TALIBAN CRACKDOWN – Shiite Muslims who chose to take part in religious observances for Muharram were filmed being dispersed violently by Taliban security personnel. The Afghan Shiite Ulema Council and many prominent Shiite leaders have called on the Taliban to allow the mourning period to continue. The Taliban continue to maintain they have imposed restrictions over security concerns. Some senior religious leaders in the Shiite community have called on followers to defy the Taliban.

  • TALIBAN PRESS REGISTRATION PROGRAM VIEWED WITH SUSPICION – A program to register all journalists in Afghanistan commenced yesterday in Kabul. However, journalists say they do not trust the program and the virtual lack of credibility on the part of the Taliban have many international journalism organizations warning their Afghan colleagues not to participate. The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture says the program is meant to support journalists and continues to claim it was a program that began under the former regime. To obtain a Press Identity card, one must provide photos, names, affiliations, and contact information to the Taliban. Obviously, the rather harsh treatment many members of the Afghan press have dealt with over the past two years has caused many to question the true motivations behind the program.

  • US/TALIBAN MEETINGS SCHEDULED IN QATAR – US envoys will meet with the Taliban in Doha to discuss several topics of interest. The US team will then travel to Kazakhstan for meetings with the Central Asian States on Afghanistan. The majority of the meeting is expected to focus on human rights but will also include discussions about trade, security, and economic stabilization. The meeting in Kazakhstan will involve the C5+1 group of nations that was formed with President Obama at the UN in 2015. The members include Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

NEXT 24 HOURS
ISIS-K ISSUES THREAT TO TALIBAN – ISIS-K released a message on several of its many social media platforms that scoffed at claims the terrorist group had been neutralized in Afghanistan and warned of impending attacks. Historically, ISIS-K launches an operation within 2-5 days of posting such messages. There has been no information received about any specific targets or dates for any potential attack. However, with the ongoing Muharram observance taking place, ISIS-K could well target Shiite Mosques or neighborhoods. Alternatively, they may attempt to strike at senior Taliban leadership owing to the many insults the Taliban have thrown at them over the past two months.

Somali Govt confirms foreign fighters among 25 killed in repelled attack
More on this story from yesterday.

Al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
members were killed in an operation by the Somali National Army in the western areas of the Wajid district in the Bakool region of the Southwest regional government.

A blurb from the Somali government said that 25 al-Shabaab fighters were killed in the operation in the Bakool region, which came following an ambush attack on the airport.

Also, the government said that five of the slain al-Shabaab members were foreigners, who were assigned to the operations in the Bakool region that lies near the Æthiopian border.

Wajib DC Mohammed Moalin Yusuf confirmed the death of the members, including foreigners, adding that other members of al-Shabaab were maimed in the battle.

The government has said that it is concentrating its operations against al-Shabaab in the regions of the state, especially on the road connecting the cities of Mogadishu and Baidoa.

In conjunction with clan militias, the national army has dislodged al-Shabaab from swathes of central Somalia, marking a breakthrough in the fifteen-year war.

As its campaign proceeds to the second phase, Mogadishu should take steps to strengthen its hold on the territory it has retaken.

Somalia military re-captures key town from Al-Shabaab
[Garowe] A day after losing control of a strategic village in Somalia, the national army has recaptured it from the al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
bad boys, who have been wreaking havoc on innocent civilians and members of security forces, who are fighting to control the region.

The national army recaptured Goofgaduud Burey village within Southwest state, in what officials termed as a "significant step" towards stabilization of the Horn of Africa nation. The village, which is situated about 30 kilometers west of Baidoa, was lost to al-Shabaab on Sunday before being recaptured on Wednesday.

According to locals, security officers entered the town without much resistance, an indication that the murderous Moslems have been diffused following systematic campaigns that have left them completely dismembered. The district had fallen to al-Shabaab after the withdrawal of Somali troops from the area.

The Somali National Army [SNA], African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] troops, and local militia have been using the town for a strategic offensive against the bad boys. Baidoa is the regional administrative capital of Southwest State and could be the center of struggles in the coming weeks.

The takeover took place a few days before the army with assistance from international partners killed over 45 al-Shabaab murderous Moslems in the neighboring Bakool region, with at least five foreigners dying in the ambush. The ambush also comes days before Somalia starts the second phase of operations against al-Shabaab.

Britain
British rapper-turned Jihadi Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, 32, who was long thought to be one of the ISIS Beatles is found dead in his Spanish prison cell while awaiting a verdict on terror charges
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A former British rapper once believed to be the ISIS killer 'Jihadi' John has been found dead in his prison cell in Spain.

Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary,
...another Anjem Choudary protégé and 2nd gen jihadi...
32, had been tried earlier this month at a court in Madrid on suspicion of heading an itinerant jihadist cell he allegedly formed after leaving Syria, and was awaiting the verdict.

He is understood to have been found dead at a prison in El Puerto de Santa Maria in Cadiz, south west Spain. One unconfirmed local report said his body presented no obvious signs of any violence.
too bad.
An internal Spanish Prison service investigation will now take place and his family will be given the right to hold their own autopsy aside from the official post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death.

A separate probe will be carried out by a court in the town of El Puerto de Santa Maria.

He was arrested with two men described as aides less than a week after they were smuggled onto a beach on Spain's south-east coastline in April 2020.

Abdel Bary was born in Egypt but schooled in London. He was stripped of his British citizenship after allegedly joining ISIS and was charged after a long-running investigation sparked by his arrest at a hideaway rented flat in Almeria.

Investigating judge Maria Tardon concluded in her written ruling outlining her decision to charge him that he had been smuggled into Spain by boat with two Algerian men less than a week before he was located and held.

He was warned before his trial at Madrid's Audiencia Nacional court, which finished on July 14, he could face nine years in prison if convicted.

On the opening day of his trial he denied all terrorism charges against him, insisting he had never been in the Syrian city of Raqqa before claiming he went to the country for humanitarian reasons.

Prosecutors said in a pre-trial indictment that the former British national, the son of Adel Abdel Bari
...an Al Qaeda Big Turban who didn't spend nearly enough time in prison — or possibly too much, depending on one’s philosophy about such things...
who confessed to murdering more than 200 people in a series of Islamist bombings in Africa, used bitcoin to buy stolen or cloned bank cards on the Dark Web.

His alleged accomplices, named before the trial as Abderrazak Seddiki, 30, and Kossaila Chollouah, 27 were accused in a pre-trial indictment of playing other key roles in the fraud including carding which is a type of credit card scam in which a criminal steals or fraudulently uses credit card details to buy prepaid gift cards.

He was alleged to have posted an image of himself holding a severed head on Twitter.

He was accused of posing for a photo with the head in the Syrian city of Raqqa with the caption 'Chillin' with my homie or what's left of him' in August 2014.

The alleged terrorist, who at his trial showed he had put on considerable weight since his arrest, denied it was him with the severed head.

Insisting he and his family had lived in the UK for more than 30 years and completely adopted a Western lifestyle, Abdel Bary told the court trying him: 'Al Qaeda and all the radical extremists… I hate them. I don't agree with their ideology or actions.'

Abdel Bary claimed to be a Syrian national called Ahmed Mohamed Al Oulabi when he was held in Almeria in April 2020.

Reports at the time said he was arrested after police spotters identified him by his ears when he opened a second-floor door to receive a kebab takeout from an Uber Eats kebab delivery man.

Danish Far-Right Group Burns Quran in Front of More Embassies Amid Police Protection
[Shafaq News] On Wednesday, the Danish far-right group "Danske Patrioter" (Danish Patriots) burned copies of the Koran before the Iraqi and Pak embassies in Copenhagen while being protected by the police.

The group's members displayed anti-Islamic banners and offensive messages during the event. They also desecrated the Pak flag and set ablaze copies of the Holy Koran, live-streaming it on their social media accounts.

This incident took place amidst stringent security measures enforced by the police.

The same group recently carried out similar actions in front of the Ottoman Turkish, Egyptian, and Iranian embassies in Copenhagen, with police safeguarding their activities during each event.

On Tuesday, the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
General Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday to address the rising violence based on religion and abuse of religious symbols and holy books, deploring such acts as violations of international law.

The resolution promotes dialogue between religions and cultures and urges the international community to tackle hate speech, which can fuel religious tensions and incite violence.

The 193-member General Assembly adopted Morocco's proposed resolution through consensus. It strongly denounces all forms of violence against individuals based on religion or belief. It condemns any acts directed against religious symbols, holy books, homes, businesses, properties, schools, cultural centers, places of worship, and attacks on sacred places, sites, and shrines that contravene international law.

On July 12, the UN Human Rights Council based in Geneva condemned recent attacks on the Koran, despite some Western countries voting against the resolution.

The Council's resolution called for condemning such attacks and labeled them as "acts of religious hatred."

Settlers storm into Palestinian homes to ‘conduct searches,’ at least 1 of them armed
[IsraelTimes] Police deny receiving complaint; IDF says it was aiding in hunt for stolen property near West Bank’s Hebron, declines to comment on presence of civilians, one bearing assault rifle

Armed settlers stormed into Paleostinian homes in a village near the West Bank city of Hebron Tuesday morning and searched them as IDF soldiers looked on, according to video footage circulated online.

In a video published by the Yesh Din human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
group said to be in an unnamed Bedouin village near Hebron, a group of settlers, one of whom was carrying an assault rifle, can be seen walking from home to home searching their meager belongings and shouting at the inhabitants.

One of the settlers can be seen kicking a hole in the door of a cabinet inside one of the homes. A child can be heard crying in the background.

No uniformed IDF soldiers can be seen in that video, although Yesh Din claimed that several arrived later. Private Israeli citizens are not legally able to purchase assault rifles.

In a separate video shared by the Breaking the Silence organization said to be in a nearby village, IDF soldiers can be seen accompanying the settlers conducting searches.

Asked to comment, the Israel Police said in a statement that the incident had been "managed entirely by the military." The police said that no complaint had been filed, although some Israeli activists said they had called the police during the searches.

In response to a request for comment from The Times of Israel, the IDF said it had received a report Monday evening of property stolen from Israeli citizens by Paleostinians in the South Hebron Hills area. The IDF said its forces conducted a search in the area in coordination with the Israel Police.

IDF: Palestinian gunman killed by Israeli forces during raid in Nablus
[IsraelTimes] Clashes break out as Israeli troops surround home and detain terror suspect in refugee camp in northern West Bank city

An alleged Paleostinian gunman was rubbed out by Israeli forces during a raid in the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday, the military and Paleostinian health officials said.

The Israel Defense Forces said troops entered the Ein Beit al-Ma’ refugee camp in the city, also known as al-Ein Camp or Camp No. 1, in order to detain a Paleostinian suspected of involvement in terror activities.

As troops surrounded a home where the wanted Paleostinian was holed up, festivities broke out in the area, according to the military and Paleostinian media reports.

The IDF said Paleostinian button men opened fire toward the Israeli forces, and rioters hurled stones and other objects.

"The forces shot and hit an armed terrorist who fired toward them," the IDF said.

The Paleostinian Authority health ministry said a young man, 23-year-old Muhammad Nada, was fatally shot in the chest by Israeli forces.

No Israeli soldiers were hurt during the raid.

The IDF said the wanted man, named by Paleostinian media as Nour al-Bassiouni, was handed over to the Shin Bet security agency for further questioning

Earlier, the IDF said that troops had detained 32 wanted Paleostinians during overnight sweeps across the West Bank, with violence in some areas. Two assault rifles were seized in the southern West Bank town of ad-Dhahiriya, the IDF said.
Al Ahram names him as Mohammad Abdul Hakim Nada, adding:
The army detained nine people, including a 16-year-old, in Bethlehem, and seven in Tubas.

They also detained eight people from Jenin, three from Al-Bireh, and eight from Jerusalem, including two minors aged 16 and 17.
