Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief July 31, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • BOMBING IN PAKISTAN KILLS AT LEAST 40, 150 WOUNDED – The bomb was detonated at a rally for a hard-line cleric and political leaders in the Bajur District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday. The convention was organized for Maulana Fazlur Rehman and his party, Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI). Rehman is thought to be allied with the TTP and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Police say that a suicide bomber likely infiltrated the gathering and successfully bypassed the JUI party’s security personnel. JUI party officials were quick to point the finger at other political groups and said the bombing was an attempt to keep JUI candidates out of the November elections. No group has yet claimed credit for the attack but a source in Islamabad said it was almost certainly an ISIS operation and authorities believed the bomber had slipped across the border from Afghanistan. Based on preliminary reports from medical personnel, the death toll is expected to rise in the coming hours and days.

  • US SPECIAL INSPECTOR GENERAL FOR AFGHANISTAN RECONSTRUCTION ISSUES WARNING TO TALIBAN – In a recent report from the US SIGAR, the funds on reserve in Switzerland could be withheld should the Taliban continue to interfere in the central bank’s operations. As the Taliban have rejected the former constitution, there are currently no laws that govern the banking infrastructure in the country. The current governor and deputy governor of the central bank are Taliban leaders, possess no banking experience, and are reputedly not the smartest people in any room. The US’s position is firm, there can be no political interference in the banking system but there are rumors the Taliban intend to vacate the banking laws and will try to replace them with a hybridized Sharia-based system that some other countries claim to have adopted. Most observers believe the loss of these funds would cause a collapse of the Afghan economy.

  • MINISTRY OF MARTYRS AND DISABLED SAYS IT IS FINALLY READY TO PROVIDE COMPENSATION FOR THE DISABLED, ORPHANS, AND WIDOWS – After delaying the support payments for nearly two years, the Ministry says it will provide a back pay allowance of six months to those who have been verified on the lists in the Ministry. There are concerns that employees of the former government have had their names struck off the list and there are also rumors that many Taliban officials have created some ‘Ghost Disabled’. The term refers to people who do not actually exist but whose benefits are sent to accounts owned by corrupt officials. A few select NGOs are waiting to see how the disbursements are paid and are concerned that minorities and women may be left out.

NEXT 24 HOURS
PAKISTAN EXPECTING HIGH-LEVEL VISITS, INCREASED THREAT OF TERROR ACTS – With the arrival of China’s Vice Premier, He Lifeng, for a ceremony to mark the 10-year anniversary of the CEPAK program, there are concerns that anti-Chinese sentiment that has been building in the country could invite terrorist actions. The suspected suicide bombing in Bajaur that caused so much destruction and death likely have the security forces at their highest levels of readiness. At-risk Afghans in Pakistan are likely to encounter significantly more police and military personnel on the streets during the visit of the Vice Premier and, owing to increased tensions, these forces may deal with any potential threat with extreme violence.

Sudan fighters evict Khartoum residents, clashes in Darfur
Even as ceasefire negotiations are on-going in Jeddah:
[AlAhram] Sudan's paramilitaries have ordered civilians to vacate homes in the capital's south, several residents said Sunday, as fighting between the forces of rival generals raged in the western Darfur region.

"Members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) told me I had 24 hours to leave the area," Khartoum resident Fawzy Radwan told AFP.

He had been guarding his family's home since fighting began in the city more than three months ago between the RSF and the regular army.

The war between Sudanese army lead by chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, RSF commander Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, has killed at least 3,900 people, according to a conservative estimate, and displaced some 3.5 million.

Much of the fighting has occurred in densely populated neighbourhoods of Khartoum, pushing 1.7 million residents to flee and forcing the millions who remain to shelter from the crossfire in their homes, rationing water and electricity.

Hundreds of residents were being evicted from southern Khartoum's Jabra neighbourhood, according to residents on Sunday.

Jabra and the nearby area of Sahafa are home to the army artillery corps as well as an RSF base used by Daglo.

"They told us this is a military zone now and they don't want civilians around," resident Nasser Hussein told AFP.

The RSF has been accused of rampant looting and of forcibly evicting people from their homes since the war began on April 15.

Along with Khartoum, some of the worst violence has been in the conflict-scarred region of Darfur, where allegations of war crimes have sparked a new investigation by the International Criminal Court.

Again on Sunday, festivities in the town of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state and Sudan's second-biggest city, sent bombs falling on civilian neighbourhoods, witnesses said.

In the Central Darfur state capital Zalingei, the army "killed 16 rebels and captured 14, including an officer", a military source told AFP on Sunday, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Days of "bombs repeatedly falling in our homes" have sent civilians fleeing from Nyala, according to Issa Adam, who spoke to AFP from a displacement camp.

Many are "now out in the open during the rainy reason", he said.

Mohammed Khater had also fled Nyala with his children after bombs killed his neighbours.

From a nearby camp, he told AFP that "no organization has reached us, and we're scared of the fighting reaching us."

Over 2.6 million people have been displaced within Sudan since the war began, and more than 800,000 others have fled across borders.

Libya Reinforces Border Patrols Amid Rising Migrant Crisis
[LIBYAREVIEW] On Sunday, the Spokesman for Libya’s 19th Border Guard Regiment, Ali Wali announced that efforts have been ramped up to prevent smugglers, and ensure full control over the entire borderline.

In press statements, Wali explained that a joint coordination room has been established with the Border Guard Agency, under the Ministry of Interior to deal with the escalating migrant crisis in the border region with Tunisia.

He highlighted a key meeting with Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, where they discussed the necessary resources, and received an assurance of governmental backing for the Border Guards.

Notably, Wali stated that there was no ongoing communication with Tunisia, which continues to send migrants colonists across the border. Women and children, he affirmed, are handed over to the relevant authorities and provided with all necessary services.

Earlier, Dbaiba issued directives to form a task force comprising of the Interior and Foreign Ministries, and the General Staff to coordinate efforts in handling incoming migrants colonists from Tunisia.

The border has witnessed an increase in the number of African migrants colonists attempting to cross into Libya, on their way to Europe.

Amid accusations of Tunisia "expelling" them and intentionally pushing them towards Libya, several migrant testimonials and video clips have emerged showing migrants colonists stranded in the desert between the two countries. This has been vehemently denied by the Tunisian Foreign Ministry, which described these allegations as "an attack on Tunisia’s image for dubious purposes."

Libya and Tunisia share a border stretching more than 450 kilometers. Both countries have been grappling with the migrant crisis.

Saudi Arabia detains former puppet government Defence Minister
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Saudi authorities have placed the former Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i defense minister, Mahmoud al-Subaihi, under house arrest, media loyal to the Saudi-led coalition reported on Sunday.

This comes after Riyadh summoned him after his release by the Sanaa regime.

Journalist Majed al-Daari, editor-in-chief of the "Observers Press" news website affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council, said on Twitter that al-Subaihi refused all the temptations and privileges that were offered to him to play a role in tearing the south apart.

He noted that Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
summoned al-Subaihi after Sana’a released him, and he has been on its territory since then, despite his insistence on returning to his hometown.

Media outlets affiliated with the STC had stated that the Saudi authorities put al-Subaihi under house arrest, like other Yemeni officials detained by the Kingdom.

Gunshots fired, grenade hurled at checkpost in KP's Khyber district
[GEO.TV] Law enforcers on Sunday were attacked at a checkpost after an assailant fired shots and threw a hand grenade at them.

This assault on law enforcement adds to the ongoing security issues in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which has been witnessing numerous bad boy attacks in July alone.

Geo News, on July 21, reported at least four terror attacks in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in just 48 hours, including one in the capital city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

A policeman, on July 20, was martyred, and 10 others were maimed after a terrorist went kaboom! when the police intercepted him and his accomplice while entering the Bara tehsil compound — which houses the Bara Police Station, government offices, and a cell of the counter-terrorism department (CTD).

The province has seen a surge in terrorist attacks — from improvised bomb blasts to suicide kabooms — since late last year when the Tehrik-e-Taliban

In light of the rising militancy, Pakistain's government has warned Afghanistan against providing safe havens to the banned TTP — a terrorist organization targeting security forces.

The top brass of the Pakistain Army has recently said that sanctuaries and liberty of action available to bandidos Death Eaters of proscribed TTP and other groups of that ilk in Afghanistan is one of the major reasons impacting the security of Pakistain.

Pakistain has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks following Afghan Taliban's return to power in August 2021 and called upon the interim rulers to take decisive actions against terrorists, including the TTP, responsible for cross-border attacks.

Terror activities in the country have soared by 79% during the first half of 2023, a statistical report released by the independent think tank Pakistain Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) showed.

KP interim Information Minister Feroz Jamal said on Geo News' morning show the police are equipped to deal with the rising terrorist activities but also noted that the Afghan government's actions could help curb militancy.

"If there is peace in Afghanistan, there will be peace in Pakistain. Anyone involved in cross-border terrorism should be dealt with [in Afghanistan]," the information minister said.

Suicide bomber suspected as explosion at Islamist rally in Pakistan kills at least 40, wounds more than 150
[NYPOST] An explosion destroyed an Islamist political rally in northwest Pakistain on Sunday, killing at least 40 people and injuring more than 150 others, police said.

The Inspector General of Police for the Bajaur district said the blast, likely a suicide kaboom, took place in the town of Khar as hundreds gathered to rally behind the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one that was led by Maulana Samiul Haq. -Fazl (JUI-F) group.

Officials believe the attack was targeting members of the political group, with its regional leader, Maulana Ziaullah, among those who died in the blast, according to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

Officials said the event was held close to a market square in the town, and was guarded by volunteer party members holding batons.

Despite the security, police chief Akhtar Hayat Gandapur told news hounds a jacket wallah likely sneaked into the venue and set off the earth-shattering kaboom just as high ranking leaders for the political party arrived.

First responders rushed to the scene, with local broadcasts showing rescue workers carrying the injured away as other residents flee in panic.
On X (Twitter) there are claims that the explosion was by ISIS to remind both the Taliban and Pakistan that ISIS is the better choice.
Dawn adds:
At least 44 people were killed while over 100 were wounded in a suicide blast at a Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) workers’ convention in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Bajaur district on Sunday.

The explosion occurred when more than 400 JUI-F members and supporters gathered under a tent in the town of Khar, near the border with Afghanistan.

KP Health Minister Riaz Anwar told AFP that 44 people had been confirmed killed and over 100 wounded.

Bajaur District Emergency Officer Saad Khan told Dawn.com that Maulana Ziaullah Jan, JUI-F emir in Khar tehsil, was also killed in the blast.
A photo of the good maulana can be seen at the link.
Speaking to the media later at night, KP Inspector General of Police Akhtar Hayat Khan said 10 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

He said ball bearings and other explosive materials had been collected from the site.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

Fire, blasts cut off power in much of Iraq in scorching summer heat, partially restored by Sat. night
More on this story from yesterday.
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Power was cut off in large swaths of southern and central Iraq for much of Saturday during scorching summer heat and observances of the Shiite holy day of Ashoura after a fire broke out at a power station in the southern city of Basra.

The fire at the al-Bkir substation in Basra resulted in the separation of transmission lines linking the southern and central regions, leading to a complete shutdown of the electrical system in the area, Iraq's Ministry of Electricity said in a statement. It said the fire was accidental.

The power outage came as the electrical system faces other challenges, including fuel shortages and surging demands for electricity during a major heat wave. On Saturday, temperatures reached 47 degrees Celsius (116.6 degrees Farenheit).

Also on Saturday, the company that handles electricity transmission in the north reported that the northern transmission line in a remote area outside the city of Haditha in western Iraq had been sabotaged. Three towers were hit by improvised bombs, putting the line out of service, the statement said.

It did not say who was responsible for the attack.

Staff were not initially able to repair the damage on Friday due to security issues, the statement said. Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
cells and other gangs are active in the remote desert area. On Saturday, workers were able to access the site with the help of security forces and begin repair work.

The Ministry of Electricity ordered the formation of committees to investigate both incidents.

The power blackout had a domino effect on other services, with Baghdad Municipality attributing a disruption in tap water supply to the outage caused by the fire in Basra. The municipality said it was trying to run water pumps using generators to limit the impact on citizens.

Earlier this month, Iraq signed a $27 billion deal with TotalEnergies that many hope will help resolve Iraq's longstanding electricity crisis, attract international investors and reduce its reliance on gas imports from neighboring Iran.

Electricity partially restored in Iraq following sudden shutdown

[Rudaw] The Iraqi electricity ministry announced on Saturday night that electricity has been partially restored across southern and central Iraq after a fire caused a complete shutdown amid the scorching summer heat and Ashura celebrations.

"Electricity supply to all hospitals, medical centers, water, and sewage stations have been restored," the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Saturday night on Facebook, adding that electricity will be gradually restored after restarting generating units to reconnect the separated grid lines in an earlier statement.

Iraq already suffers from chronic electricity shortages, especially felt during the summer months. The high temperatures subsequently lead citizens to consume very high amounts of power. In previous years, mass protests have erupted in the south during the summer as a result of electricity and water shortages.

Earlier this month, the electricity ministry announced that the country lost nearly 5,000 megawatts of power due to Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
completely stopping the supply of gas to the southern regions of the country.

Iraq’s electricity ministry said that despite the "tangible improvement" the country’s power grid had made in providing electricity recently, the decrease in imported gas had led to the loss of nearly five thousand megawatts of production capacity.

For years, Iraq’s electrical grid has been dependent on gas imports from Iran to run its power generation plants. Earlier this month, Iranian state media said that Iran had exported 9.4 billion cubic meters of gas to Iraq in 2022, citing a report from the UK-based Energy Institute.

Israel says it foiled ‘irregular’ weapons smuggling from Jordan
[IsraelTimes] Incident occurred last week near Ashdot Ya’akov; many details, including type of contraband, barred from publication

The military on Sunday cleared for publication that security forces had foiled an unusual weapons smuggling attempt into Israel from Jordan last week.

Few details about the incident, which occurred on Monday near the Jordan Valley town of Ashdot Ya’akov, were initially permitted for publication.

The smuggling was described to The Times of Israel as "irregular," and not similar to previous, and frequent, smuggling attempts on the Jordanian border.

The contraband was seized by troops of the 417th Regional Brigade and members of the Matilan Border Police counterterrorism unit. The type of weapon and its origins were not immediately cleared for publication amid the ongoing investigation.

Authorities investigating the incident believe the weapons were being spirited in for use by terror groups in the West Bank.

Weapon smuggling from Jordan is a constant challenge for Israel, along its long, porous eastern border, and in the West Bank. Officials believe most guns are being used in underworld crime, and have vowed to crack down as part of an effort to end years of bloodshed in the Arab community.

The military and police have stepped up efforts to halt smuggling attempts along the Jordanian border over the past two years, and have begun to report some success.

Unlike Israel’s other frontiers — with Egypt, Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
and Syria — the border with Jordan is largely open, often without significant fencing, and guarding is limited, making it an easy channel for large-scale smuggling.

In April, a Jordanian parliamentarian was arrested by Israeli authorities for attempting to smuggle over 200 firearms into the West Bank using his diplomatic passport. He was released home several weeks later, where he faced charges.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
SDF rejects Turkish claim that 12 fighters killed
[Rudaw] The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Sunday refuted a statement hours earlier by the Ottoman Turkish defense ministry claiming it had killed 12 fighters in an operation in northern Syria.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
’s defense ministry claimed it had killed 12 SDF fighters in areas of the "Euphrates Shield," an area in northern Syria under the control of Ankara and its Syrian proxies.

The SDF issues a statement several hours later rejecting the claim.

"According to today's statement of the Ministry of Defense of the occupying Ottoman Turkish state, it is claimed that 12 of our fighters were martyred in the attacks against our forces. This claim is not true," the SDF tweeted.

The Euphrates Shield was a cross-border operation launched by the Ottoman Turkish armed forces on the west of the Euphrates River to push back the Kurdish forces from the area. Turkey claims the goal of the operation was to protect its borders from what it labels as "terror".

Turkey considers the SDF and its Kurdish backbone People’s Protection Units (YPG) as the Syria offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is an gang that fights for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey, labeled as a terrorist group by Ankara.

Turkey’s statement and the subsequent denial by the SDF come amid an increase in festivities. On Friday, the SDF announced that four of its fighters were killed in a dronezap in the Amuda district of Hasaka in northeast Syria (Rojava).

The SDF accused Turkey of "undermining the security and the stability in the region" with its attacks.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Ottoman Turkish drones have carried out 29 attacks on areas controlled by the SDF in 2023, killing a total of 44 people - 10 civilians, including a child and a woman, 31 military personnel and three soldiers of the Syrian regime.

Government soldiers killed, wounded in Turkish attack in Aleppo
[NPASYRIA] On Sunday, a Ottoman Turkish drone targeted the Menagh Military Airbase in northern Aleppo, killing and wounding Syrian government soldiers.

Government soldier killed in eastern Daraa
[NPASYRIA] One soldier of Syrian government forces was killed and another accused of working with them was injured in two separate incidents on Sunday by unknown button men in the eastern countryside of the city of Daraa, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press that "Mansour Nasser al-Mekdad was killed after being targeted by unknown button men in east of Daraa city."

The source said that unknown button men riding a cycle of violence shot up al-Mekdad on the road between the towns of al-Musayfirah and al-Sahoah in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

The source added that al-Mekdad was transferred to the National Hospital of the city of Busra al-Sham in eastern Daraa, where he died. He hails from the same city and had served within the ranks of the Eighth Brigade of government forces.

In another incident, a local source told North Press that "Muhammad Imad al-Kurdi was shot at and critically injured in eastern Daraa."

He added that unknown button men riding cycle of violences fired at al-Kurdi on the road between the towns of al-Musayfirah and Eastern Ghariyah in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

The source noted that al-Kurdi was injured in several places and was then taken to the Daraa National Hospital, indicating that the injured person is from al-Musayfirah in the eastern countryside of Daraa and is accused of dealing with government forces in the town, according to the source.

Bullets, shells hit Sidon as deadly clashes renew in Ain al-Hellhole; end-of-day hudna fails
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Clashes renewed Sunday in the Ain al-Helweh Paleostinian refugee camp near Sidon between the secular Fatah Movement and hardline Islamist groups.

TV networks said the fighting resumed after a senior Fatah commander was killed in an ambush.

An Islamist had been killed and six people including children had been injured in overnight festivities in the camp.

Key Sidon highways were closed to traffic on Sunday as stray bullets and shells landed in various areas of the major southern Lebanese city.

Clashes between rival groups are common in Ain al-Helweh, which is home to more than 54,000 registered Paleostinian refugees who have been joined in recent years by thousands of Paleostinians fleeing the conflict in Syria.

The incidents come about two months after similar festivities killed a Fatah member in the same camp.

Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel.
's official news agency NNA said "an liquidation attempt targeting an Islamist activist" rocked the camp on Saturday.

By long-standing convention, the Lebanese Army does not enter Paleostinian refugee camps in Lebanon, leaving the factions themselves to handle security.

That has created lawless areas in many camps, and Ain al-Helweh has gained notoriety as a refuge for Lions of Islam and runaways.

In March, one person was killed and several others maimed in overnight festivities in the camp, that pitted members of Abbas' Fatah Movement against Islamist groups.

More than 450,000 Paleostinians are registered with UNRWA in Lebanon.

Most live in one of 12 official refugee camps, often in squalid conditions, and face a variety of legal restrictions, including on their employment.
Actually, many live quietly outside the camps, renting out their official addresses to people in even greater distress, like Syrian refugees.
More from the second link:
One person was killed and six others injured in overnight festivities in south Lebanon's restive Ain al-Helweh Paleostinian refugee camp, a Paleostinian official told AFP Sunday.

Clashes inside the camp left "one dead and six camp residents injured, including children," said Munir Makdah, a bigwig in Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

' Fatah Movement.

"We are working... to end the festivities and hand over those involved in the incident," he added.

"An Islamist from al-Shabab al-Muslim group was killed, and a leader in the group was among the maimed," said a Paleostinian source inside the camp, who requested not to be identified for security reasons.
Everyone is pitching in in this story — more from the Times of Israel:
The ongoing clashes are taking place as Palestinian factions in Ein el-Hilweh for years have cracked down on militant Islamist groups and fugitives seeking shelter in the camp’s overcrowded neighborhoods. In 2017, Palestinian factions engaged in almost a week of fierce clashes with a militant organization affiliated with the Islamic State terror group.

The Palestinian officials, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the clashes broke out after an unknown gunman tried to assassinate Islamist militant Mahmoud Khalil, killing a companion of his instead.

Factions used assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers in the overcrowded camp, as ambulances zoomed through its narrow streets to take the wounded to the hospital. Several residents fled the crossfire to nearby neighborhoods in the camp.

According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, six people were wounded in the overnight clashes, including two children. The clashes stopped for several hours in the morning, though state media said there was still sporadic sniper fire.
Yet more from the Times of Israel:
Fighting in the Paleostinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh, near Sidon, Leb, is persisting despite a ceasefire meant to end a day of intense shootouts.

The warring factions say in a joint statement that they agreed to a ceasefire during a mediation meeting hosted by the Lebanese Shiite Amal movement and Hezbollah in Sidon. But local media say the fighting has continued.

A spokesperson from Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede, tells AP that the groups are working to implement the truce.
