Afghanistan
Taliban Assassinate Former Local Commander in Balkh Province After Detention
[8am] Local sources in the province of Balkh report the liquidation of a former government commander by the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
in this province.

Local sources stated to the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Saturday, August 12, that Sakhiudin Rahman, also known as Sakha, a local commander of the former government in the Kishindih district of Balkh province, was detained by Taliban fighters 15 days ago during a raid on his house.

According to sources, after this many days, Sakhiudin Rahman’s body was discovered buried under the ground in the center of Kishindih district by residents last Thursday.

Sources add that despite carrying the Taliban’s general amnesty letter and being busy doing hard labor after the group’s takeover, this commander was killed by the group.

This comes as last week, one of the former government commanders who had returned to the country with the mediation of Nizamuddin Qisari through the Taliban’s Commission for Engaging with Personalities was assassinated by the group in Sar-e Pol province.

Claims of Taliban killings of former ANDSF and family members continue to surface, including female officer
[AfghanWitness] While cases are difficult to fully verify, there has been a steady stream of claims since the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
’s return to power.

Please note, some links to social media content may have been removed for privacy purposes. AW has also placed warnings before links to graphic content.

On June 28, 2023, social media users circulated images allegedly showing the bodies of two former Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) and their family members who had reportedly been killed by Taliban forces in Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
and Paktia provinces respectively.

A Twitter user with over 3K followers shared three photographs, including images of two bodies with an accompanying claim that the Taliban killed a former local police officer, Ghani Jan, in the Pashtun Zarghoon district in Herat, along with his two sons. According to an Instagram post by a journalist with 18.1K followers, the Taliban reportedly beat the victims. A family picture shared on the post showed a man with two boys, both appearing to be minors. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
the photos of bodies shared on social media showed only two individuals.

A comparison between the visible corpses and the family photo allowed AW Sherlocks to establish that one of the bodies belonged to the younger boy and the other to the adult male, presumably the father. AW Sherlocks did not find a photo of the older boy's body on social media. The image of the adult male's body showed a small amount of blood around the nose, which could support the claim of beating.

On the same day, the profile of a freelance journalist on Twitter, Hadia News, shared a [WARNING: GRAPHIC] picture of three different bodies. The user claimed that, on June 28, the first day of Eid al-Adha
...a major Moslem holiday, marked by animal sacrifice and ritual rioting...
, the Taliban killed Akbar Khan — described by some posts as a former ANA soldier and others as a former local police commander — and his two sons in the Chamkinu district of Paktia province.

According to Sweden-based Afghan news outlet Voice of Citizens (VOC) News, the victims were shot by the Taliban. Reportedly, the Taliban members beat "the woman" and "killed all the men in the house". The [WARNING: GRAPHIC] picture of the bodies revealed slight bruising on the nose of the older son and the cheek, nose, and forehead of the father, which may have been caused by a beating. One of the victims can be identified as a minor due to facial features.

THREE OTHER INCIDENTS, INCLUDING ALLEGED KILLING OF FEMALE FORMER SECURITY STAFF
On June 20 and June 22, a week before the above claimed events, three other alleged extrajudicial executions of former ANDSF members were reportedly carried out in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, Badakhshan, and Jawzjan. The victims were identified as former national security staff Bibi Zahra, and former soldiers Basmillah Turkman and Mohammad Hanif.

The killing of Bibi Zahra is one of the few recorded cases concerning a female ex-government security staff member. Unlike the other two reported extrajudicial killings from that week, there were pictures of the body, providing some evidence of the incident. Although the body in the image was covered, multiple local media agencies, including AamajNews and KabulNow, claimed that Bibi Zahra was tortured and shot.

The other executed ANDSF member, Basmillah Turkman, was allegedly shot in front of his family. The method of the execution of Mohammad Hanif remains unknown. The claim of his killing came one month after his reported arrest.

Similarly, on June 1, another former ANDSF member, Jamshid Mirzaee, was also allegedly arrested, severely tortured, and then reportedly executed by the Taliban after a period of arbitrary detention in an unknown place.

There are frequent claims of killings of former ANDSF by the Taliban, with most claims featuring old images of the individuals involved and occasionally images of bodies. Given the limited evidence, it is usually impossible to verify the context around the deaths or the perpetrators. There has, however, been a steady stream of claims since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.

A STEADY STREAM OF CLAIMS
Despite the initial promises of amnesty, claims of Taliban targeting of former ANDSF have continued since August 2021. An investigation by The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

, published in April 2022, claimed that nearly 500 former government workers and security force members were either killed or forcibly disappeared during the first six months following the Taliban's takeover. The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented at least 306 extrajudicial executions between August 2021 and June 2022, with additional cases reported in December 2022.

More recently, from January 1 to July 10, 2023, AW recorded 108 claims of torture, arbitrary detention, killings, and attacks on former ANDSF members and their families across 28 provinces. This included 57 alleged arbitrary killings across 19 provinces and one in an unknown location. The killings were carried out on former ANDSF members, including security guards, former coppers, former soldiers, and their relatives.

Most of the claimed arbitrary killings were reported in Kabul (9), followed by Badakhshan (5), Balkh (5), Herat (5), Kandahar (5), and Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
(5). Four executions each were recorded in Jawzjan and Laghman
...Afghan province with a population of about 445,600, which is multi-ethnic and mostly a rural society. During the invasions of Alexander the Great, the area was known as Lampaka, wich is apparently Olde Macedonian for Laghman. The city of Mihtarlam serves as the bucolic capital of the province. The population is half Pashtun, the remainder Tadjik and Pashai. It had a repution for great wealth until it was conquered in the tenth century by Abu Mansur Sabuktigin.
He conquered it and set fire to the places in its vicinity which were inhabited by infidels, and demolishing the idol-temples, he established Islam in them, He marched and captured other cities and killed the polluted wretches, destroying the idolatrous and gratifying the Musulmans. After wounding and killing beyond all measure, his hands and those of his friends became cold in counting the value of the plundered property.
After that it was mostly notable for the production of dirt, rocks, and holy men...
provinces. In the remaining 11 provinces, the number of executions varied between one to three. There were 72 claimed victims of the arbitrary killings. Some of the victims — allegedly family members of former ANDSF — appeared to be minors at the time of execution.

Daily Evacuation Brief August 13, 2023
[AghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • MOD CONFIRMS THAT ALL TALIBAN MILITARY FORCES HAVE BEEN ISSUED UNIFORMS, FAILURE TO WEAR THEM WILL BE PUNISHED – A chief complaint by citizens, since the Taliban took the reigns of power, has been the difficulty in recognizing legitimate military and police personnel. Since the coalition forces left, criminal networks seized on the confusion and chaos to set up scams by impersonating Taliban personnel and coercing citizens to extort money and bribes. Fake checkpoints on roadways and illegitimate home searches were common ploys used in these schemes and few dared to question the people carrying them out. Some Resistance forces and ISIS-K were thought to have taken advantage of the situation to collect intelligence and/or launch operations. The Ministry of Defense stated yesterday that all Taliban personnel under its purview had now been issued uniforms and those who fail to wear them will be punished.

  • NEW NATO REPORT APPEARS TO CONFIRM RUMORS ABOUT WEAPONS/EQUIPMENT TRANSFERS TO ISIS-K – India, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan have long been raising the alarm about US and NATO weapons showing up in their jurisdictions. The recent (17th) report of the UN Secretary-General on the threat posed by ISIL (Daesh) quoted several reports from regional member states that confirmed ISIS was receiving weapons from groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda, the TTP, and the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (aka Turkistan Islamic Party). The report went on to detail efforts by ISIS-K to develop more robust weapons and bomb-making/delivery systems. The report also contradicted Taliban statements concerning the strength of ISIS-K in Afghanistan and estimates suggest that currently there are 4,000-6,000 ISIS-K affiliates operating in the country. It is important to note that these figures include family members of the terrorists.

  • 6 AFGHAN MEN AMONG THOSE DROWNED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CROSS FROM FRANCE TO THE UK – Yesterday morning, a boat carrying mainly Afghan and Sudanese refugees capsized near the French port of Calais. British and French maritime units responded to the emergency and rescued 49 people. Currently, 2 people are still reported missing. All 6 Afghan men who drowned were believed to be in their 30s and their identities were not known at the time of publication.

  • MAKING GOOD ON THREATS OF PUNISHMENT FOR ‘SORCERERS AND WITCHES’, MAN IS SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON IN JAWZJAN – A spokesman for the Ministry of Vice and Virtue said that a Jadugar (sorcerer/witch) had been found guilty of violating Shari’ah law and will serve eight years in prison. The Ministry had issued a statement earlier in the week to Provincial and District administrators to prosecute those who practice animist beliefs.

Al-Shabaab bases destroyed in central Somalia
[Garowe] The government of Somalia has confirmed the destruction of three suspected al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all ofwhich have enough problems without them...
bases in central regions, in the latest crackdown which targets the Lions of Islam in areas that were not covered in the first phase of operations against the Lions of Islam within Galmadug and HirShabelle states.

Backed by international partners, the government of Somalia said the local troops waged an operation at Galhareri District within Galmadug which led to the destruction of three al-Shabaab bases where the Lions of Islam had been retreating once they attacked civilians and members of security forces.

Within these bases, authorities said, the Lions of Islam have been preparing explosives and were partly being used as warehouses for weapons and medical equipment. The al-Shabaab enjoys services from medical practitioners, some kidnapped from far areas to assist in offering treatment.

Also actively participating in the crackdown were local militia who have been mobilized in recent weeks to help neutralize the Lions of Islam whose presence in central Somalia and southern parts has been a major bother to the country.

Ocean Viking Ship Rescues 55 Migrants Off Libyan Coast
[LIBYAREVIEW] The Ocean Viking ship received permission from the Italian authorities to return to the search and rescue zone after nearly 20 days. The vessel’s crew successfully rescued 55 migrants colonists, including women and kiddies, aboard a fiberglass boat off the Libyan coast.

The NGO SOS Méditerranée, which operates the Ocean Viking, stated in a blurb on Thrusday, that among the migrants colonists were "five women and twelve unaccompanied minors." The migrants colonists had departed from the shores of Sabratha, Libya, on the boat.

The organization further highlighted that their crew members on the Ocean Viking witnessed an interception by the Libyan coasties of another boat carrying approximately 20 migrants colonists.

The migratory route across the central Mediterranean from the Libyan and Tunisian coasts is considered one of the deadliest migration routes in the world.

According to a Spokesperson from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), "more than 1,800 people have bit the dust attempting to cross this route since the beginning of this year, an increase of around 900 compared to the previous year."

The Spokesperson added, "it is likely that the actual number is much higher. Many bodies have been found at sea, indicating numerous cases of drownings that we have never heard of."

The Spokesperson emphasised that the number of bodies found has notably increased along the so-called Tunisian route, which has become increasingly dangerous due to the type of boats used. Smugglers transport migrants colonists from sub-Saharan Africa to the sea and place them "in makeshift iron boats that cost less than the usual wooden boats but are completely unfit for navigation and prone to disintegration and sinking."

Two dead, five missing as migrant boat sinks off Tunisia

[AlAhram] At least two Tunisians including a baby died when their Europe-bound boat sank Saturday off the North African country's southeastern shores, the coastguard said, adding five others were missing.

The vessel carrying 20 Tunisians went down at 2:00 am (0100 GMT) 120 metres (395 feet) from the beach in Gabes, a statement said as search operations continue.

It said 13 passengers had been rescued.

"Two bodies have been recovered, one of a 20-year-old man and the other of an infant," said the statement.

Authorities in the city of Gabes have launched an investigation to "determine the circumstances of this tragedy", the coastguard added.

Tunisia is a major gateway for local and foreign migrants colonists attempting perilous voyages in often rickety boats in the hopes of a better life in Europe.

Britain
Six dead after migrant boat capsizes in Channel
[AlAhram] Six people were killed when a boat carrying migrants colonists heading to Britannia sank in the Channel early Saturday, French maritime officials said, as a search continued to find those still missing.

A spokeswoman from the French coastal authority Premar said between five and 10 passengers were still missing, while 55 had been rescued.

Four French ships and a helicopter plus two British vessels were involved in rescue effort off Sangatte in northern La Belle France, authorities said, adding that some survivors were rescued by the British vessels.

Earlier officials had reported that one man of Afghan origin was killed and five others were in a critical condition.

A maritime surveillance plane is also being deployed to the area, the Premar front man told AFP.

Some of those rescued were taken to the French port of Calais, where an AFP news hound saw people disembarking from a patrol boat with emergency services on site.

More than 100,000 migrants colonists have crossed the Channel on small boats from La Belle France to southeast England since Britannia began publicly recording the arrivals in 2018, official figures revealed on Friday.

French authorities have stepped up patrols and other deterrent measures after London agreed in March to send Gay Paree hundreds of millions of euros annually towards the effort.

The route across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes has repeatedly proved perilous, with several capsizings and scores of migrants colonists drowning in the waters over the last decade.

Five migrants colonists died at sea and four went missing while trying to cross over to Britannia from La Belle France last year.

In November 2021, 27 migrants colonists died in a boat capsize in the Channel.

‘TTP, Daesh militants’ among 21 arrested by Punjab CTD

Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) said on Saturday its personnel have arrested 21 alleged holy warriors of banned holy warrior outfits — who purportedly intended to carry out terrorism activities and fan sectarian tensions — during intelligence-based operations (IBOs) in several cities of the province.

The CTD said in a statement it had conducted 135 operations in the province, during which it interrogated 135 suspects and arrested 21 alleged holy warriors.

According to the CTD, the arrested men were from Tehrik-e-Taliban

"The arrested [suspects] planned to target important installations and religious places in acts of terrorism and fan sectarian tensions by sharing hate material on social media," the statement said, adding that 18 first information reports (FIR) were registered against them while they had been moved to an unknown place for investigation.

The CTD said the IBOs for the arrests were conducted in Lahore, Narowal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Muzaffargarh, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Attock, and Sahiwal.

It added that 5,118 grams of explosives, two hand grenades, as many improvised bombs, 30 detonators, 77.3-feet-long safety fuse wires, 6.3 feet of prima chords, a 30 bore pistol, a 9mm pistol along with 13 bullets, 13 books containing literature of banned holy warrior groups, three magazines, 82 pamphlets, 27 flags, a receipt book and cash worth Rs113,740 were seized from the arrested men.

Separately, the statement said, the Punjab CTD conducted 700 combing operations during the past week with the assistance of police and security institutions. During these operations, 29,829 people were checked, 49 suspects were arrested, 32 FIRs were registered and 21 people were recovered, it added.

In July, the Punjab CTD conducted IBOs in various parts of the province resulting in the arrest of 17 holy warriors associated with banned holy warrior organizations.

According to a CTD spokesperson, 132 IBOs were carried out in Punjab, specifically targeting expected terrorism activities by defunct organizations, particularly against Chinese nationals and worship places during Muharram.

‘The time to fight is now’: Masses nationwide rally against overhaul for 32nd week
[IsraelTimes] 100,000 said at Tel Aviv protest, more around the country.
...all encouraged by the Obama Biden administration State Department because their preferred leftwing party did not win the last election.
Tens of thousands of Israelis protested Saturday against the judicial overhaul in Tel Aviv and cities across the country, kicking off the 32nd straight week of protests against the legislative plan, days after the government indicated that it still intends to pass the most critical part of the package despite massive opposition.

At the main Tel Aviv protest, over 100,000 were in attendance, according to Channel 13 news, which cited data from the CrowdSolutions firm. Other rallies were held at some 150 locations.

Protesters gathered at Kaplan Square for the main part of the rally and hundreds marched to the nearby home of Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, calling "We are not afraid," waving flags and blowing horns outside before eventually being pushed away by police. Hounding the homes of government ministers has been a staple of anti-overhaul protests from the get-go, echoing tactics employed last year by the Benjamin Netanyahu-led opposition that eventually toppled the previous government and returned the Likud party leader to power.

Dozens of Tel Aviv protesters also marched down the main Yigal Alon road, seeking to block traffic, as police moved to clear them.

Among those addressing the Tel Aviv rally was retired general Amiram Levin, who at various times headed the IDF Northern Command, commanded the elite Sayeret Matkal unit and served as deputy director of the Mossad spy agency, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid and protest leader Shikma Bressler.

Earlier in the evening, police arrested three Paleostinians, aged 16, 20 and 25, who unlawfully entered Israel. The three detained near Kaplan Street were from the West Bank village of Aqraba, police said, adding that they had apparently been in Israel working illegally and were stopped due to the police’s state of high alert as they secured the protest.

Last weekend, shortly before that week’s protests, 42-year-old Tel Aviv municipal security officer Chen Amir was shot and killed in the city by a member of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group who also crossed into Israel illegally.

In addition to the rally in Tel Aviv, thousands of anti-overhaul protesters held demonstrations in Jerusalem, Beersheba, Haifa and dozens of other cities across the country.

Thousands of protesters intermittently blocked the Karkur Junction in northern Israel, lighting flares, as police worked to remove them from the road.

Protesters were reportedly preparing to completely shut down the country if the government does not respect such a High Court ruling on the "reasonableness" law or on the recusal law, which bars the court and the attorney general from ordering a premier to step down — a move apparently designed to allow Netanyahu to violate a conflict of interest deal he signed.

The anti-overhaul protesters "are prepared for a complete paralysis of the country, based on a general strike of the economy without a time limit," a source within the protest movement was cited as saying by multiple Hebrew media outlets.

"Many important sectors of the economy have already joined the plan," the source said, expressing hope that the Histadrut national labor union would join such action.

Netanyahu indicated a week ago that his government will move ahead with changing the makeup of the Judicial Selection Committee, perhaps the most far-reaching and controversial measure in the judicial shakeup package. He intimated that he was still seeking consensus on this. After that, he said, he would shelve the rest of the judicial overhaul plan.

"We’ve already done quite a bit," Netanyahu told the Bloomberg financial news outlet. "I stopped the judicial legislation for three months, seeking consensus from the other side — unfortunately not getting it. Then [I] brought in a relatively minor part of the reform, passed it," he said, referencing the passage two weeks ago of the controversial reasonableness law.

The current judicial selection bill, which was suspended in March but is ready to be brought for its final readings at short notice, would remake the Judicial Selection Committee, under which coalition and Supreme Court representatives currently each have veto power over the other’s candidates for the top court, requiring a consensus on such appointments. Instead, the legislation would change the composition of the panel so as to bring appointments throughout the judicial hierarchy under near-absolute government control.

Lebanon army arrests 134 Europe-bound migrants
[AlAhram] The Lebanese army arrested 134 migrants colonists near the northern border with Syria on Saturday after foiling their attempt to take a boat to Europe, it said in a statement.

The group of would-be migrants colonists -- made up of 130 Syrians and four Lebanese nationals -- were taken into custody in the coastal town of Sheikh Zennad, in Akkar province, the army statement said.

The army said it also detained "the criminal mastermind behind the operation" who was a Lebanese national.

In a separate statement, Lebanese armed forces said they had arrested 150 Syrians who had crossed into Leb

illegally in another part of Akkar province.

Lebanon is mired in what the World Bank describes as one of the worst economic crises in modern history.

The economic collapse has turned the country into a launchpad for migrants colonists, with its own citizens joining Syrian and Paleostinian refugees clamouring to leave by taking dangerous sea routes.

Authorities say Lebanon currently hosts around two million Syrians, while more than 800,000 are registered with the United Nations

Turkish-backed SNA assaults employees in Syria's Afrin
[NPASYRIA] Militants of the Civil Police affiliated with the Ottoman Turkish-backed armed opposition, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), assaulted on Friday employees in front of one of the Ottoman Turkish banks in the town of Jindires in the countryside of Afrin Region, northwest Syria.

Eyewitnesses told North Press that the Civil Police attacked a woman inside the center of PTT(Ottoman Turkish bank) in Jindires, which sparked anger among employees who were waiting in front of the center to receive their salaries.

The police shot in the air and sprayed pepper spray to disperse the crowd, which led to injuries among women, according to the eyewitnesses.

Dozens of PTT branches are located in various areas under the control of Ottoman Turkish forces and SNA factions in the countryside of Aleppo. SNA factions force humanitarian organizations and their facilities in northwest Syria to receive the salaries of their employees from PTT centers and only in Ottoman Turkish currency.

US-led Coalition denies any attack on base in Deir ez-Zor
[NPASYRIA] A source from the US-led Global Coalition denied on Saturday any attacks against their troops in Conoco gas field, in Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

Earlier today, many media outlets reported that several rockets targeted the Coalition’s base in the Conoco gas field.

"Nothing has happened at Conoco today. Not even a training event with demolition," the source told North Press.

On August 4, a kaboom occurred in the town of Shaddadi, in southern Hasakah, which raised speculations about an attack against the Coalition’s base in the town.

The source dismissed allegations about such an attack.

"The explosion at Shaddadi was also not an attack, it was a result of faulty ammunition that was confiscated during security operations conducted by the SDF and there were no injuries," the source added.

"None of the stories of attacks are true and it is deeply concerning," the source concluded.
