[AFRICANEWS] Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived Sunday in the coastal city of Port Sudan, an official statement said, as the country reels from over four months of war with paramilitaries.
Burhan made his first public foray in months earlier this week, having been cloistered within army headquarters in the capital Khartoum ever since the conflict erupted on April 15.
Armed forces have been fending off an unceasing offensive on the headquarters by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by Burhan's deputy turned rival Mohammed Hamdan Daglo.
According to a statement from the ruling sovereign council, Burhan was met Sunday by his deputy Malik Agar and other government officials who -- like the United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... -- have relocated operations to Port Sudan, which has been spared the fierce fighting that has gripped other parts of the country.
Also on Sunday, "rockets fell on houses, killing five people", a medical source told AFP from the capital Khartoum, where witnesses also reported air strikes.
Burhan has been the de facto leader of Sudan since October 2021, when he -- in collaboration with Daglo -- led a coup that ousted civilian leaders from government and derailed a fragile transition to civilian rule.
Videos of Burhan's first foray outside army headquarters were posted Thursday, with captions indicating he was at the Wadi Seidna air base north of Khartoum.
More footage was posted by the army Friday, showing Burhan greeting troops, assuring them of impending "victory" and visiting an army hospital in the city of Atbara, 300 kilometres northeast of Khartoum.
While the capital's airport has been out of service since the conflict began, the airport in Port Sudan has remained operational for evacuation and relief flights, fuelling speculation of an overseas trip for the army chief.
Local journalists, who have flocked to the coastal city to track the army chief's movements, have floated the possibility that he is travelling to Cairo -- traditionally Burhan's closest foreign ally -- or Jeddah, the site of ceasefire negotiations previously brokered by Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... and the United States.
Conservative estimates from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data project show that nearly 5,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah said late on Sunday evening that minister Najla al-Mangoush has been "temporarily suspended" and would be subject to an "administrative investigation" by a commission chaired by the Justice Minister.

[SUDANTRIBUNE] The South Sudanese army (SSPDF) have been accused of looting, detaining and torturing religious leaders in Central Equatoria State.
The holy mans, in a statement issued on Saturday, accused a section of the army units in Yei River County of arresting the clergy of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan.
A mobile unit of the government army, it said, attacked, looted, and tortured Christians of the Episcopal church of South Sudan in Nyori and Mongo archdeaconries of the diocese of Yei River County on August 24 and August 25.
The actions of the government military caused consternation and condemnation from the office of the Episcopal Bishop of Central Equatorial Internal Province.
"We the bishops, the clergies and the entire Christians of central Equatoria internal province, would like to express our deepest sadness on attacks, torture, looting of the Christians and arrest of the clergy of the Episcopal church of South Sudan by mobile force of Sudan People’s defense forces in Nyori and Mongo payams of Yei River County of Central Equatoria State," partly reads the statement.
It also called for an investigation and that those responsible be held accountable.
The SSPDF front man, Major General Lul Ruai Koang said he was not aware of the incident, adding that it is not the army’s policy to loot, arrest and torture civilians.

Abdullah Mubarak al-Ghaithi, a politician and academic in the STC, who resides in Dubai, said in a post on X this Sunday, that the closure of universities and institutes affiliated with the Islah Party in Aden and the rest of southern governorates will stop the flow of al-Qaeda elements to those areas.
The suffering of the people of Aden is worse than the people of Niger, he said.

Al-Qaeda elements are spreading in the Habban district’s "Al-Arm and Qarn al-Souda" areas, south of Ataq city, the center of the province, in view of the "Shabwah Defense" factions loyal to the UAE, according to the sources.
The criminal elements came from Omran valley and Sabr areas in Mudiyah district in Abyan ...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. The mayor of the city of Brus Laguna, Wilmer Wood, was detained by the security forces as a result of a large-scale operation against the drug trade in Honduras. This was reported on August 27 by the press service of the country's prosecutor's office.
“In the course of the Nutos operations, the prosecutor’s office liquidated three criminal organizations involved in the drug trade, among the detainees was the mayor of Brus Laguna,” the agency said in a statement.
