Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief September 29, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • RUMORS OF POSSIBLE TTP EXODUS – Reports are beginning to surface on select analysis sites that a large TTP incursion of Pakistan may take place in the coming days. There are reports from two of the border Provinces in Afghanistan of trucks assembling in at least five different villages. A source in Kabul said that TTP leaders were being ‘encouraged’ to depart Afghanistan to lower tensions with Pakistan (and take the pressure off of Kabul). It was not clear who communicated this message to the TTP leadership in Afghanistan and this information has not been confirmed. Social media sites sympathetic to the TTP in Pakistan have been hinting that more TTP fighters would be returning to Pakistan over the last four days.

  • THE UNITED NATIONS CONCERNED ABOUT FORCED REPATRIATION PLANS IN PAKISTAN – An anonymous UN official spoke with journalists and said the body is deeply concerned about the recent remarks made by the caretaker PM in Islamabad about repatriating foreigners who are in the country illegally. Officials from the UN are in discussions with the government in Islamabad and are seeking to clarify the remarks. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Pakistan was quick to thank Pakistan for its generosity in dealing with multiple displacement events but also warned that it expected Pakistan to only repatriate those who agree to return voluntarily.

  • BRITISH TOURIST, MILES ROUTLEDGE, RESURFACES ON SOCIAL MEDIA – The young British student who made headlines for traveling to Afghanistan in 2022 is now reputedly passing updates through a friend on X (formerly Twitter). The most recent updates attributed to Routledge say he is living a luxurious life and is even considering investing in a gold mining operation. Routledge’s family told journalists they have no idea if their son is safe or is being treated well. They also said that Britain’s Foreign Office had not yet contacted them about their son.

  • AFGHAN EMBASSY IN INDIA MAY BE CLOSING – The diplomatic ruckus over who runs the Embassy of Afghanistan in India has heated up again. An email purportedly sent from the Embassy’s email servers was sent to the Government of India and announced the Embassy would be closing operations. Indian authorities were investigating the validity of the message and attempting to contact the Ambassador, Farid Mamundzay (who is in London). The Ambassador found himself embroiled in a coup when a deputy claimed that Kabul had put him in charge. Ambassador Mamundzay disputed the claims while he was in London and India appeared to have let the matter work itself out.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kunar: ISIS-K militants reportedly attacked an unidentified Taliban position in the province. Eye witnesses said that 1 Taliban fighter was killed in the exchange of fire.

NEXT 24 HOURS
A THREAT OF A TTP INCURSION INTO KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA IS CIRCULATING – At this point, the threat is mainly rumor but seems logical considering recent statements made by officials in both Islamabad and Kabul. Estimates vary substantially over how many armed TTP fighters remain in Afghanistan. Early estimates (April 2022) put the figure at 5,000 while more recent estimates suggest it may be closer to 2,000. The tension along the border has been running high and Pakistan’s security forces are on high alert. Any incursion by the TTP in sizable numbers is likely to invite violence on a scale that has not been witnessed on this border since the Taliban took power in Kabul. Non-combatants could easily be caught up in the fighting. At-risk Afghans should avoid the border region if at all possible for the time being. If reports arrive that an action is underway, we will issue an ALERT message with as much information as we can gather. Otherwise, we are hoping this is only a rumor and doesn’t come to pass.

Afghan Taliban arrested 200 TTP militants involved in attacks against Pakistan
Sacrifices must be made for international amity, amirite?
[GEO.TV] Islamabad’s efforts to counter cross-border attacks have borne fruits as interim Afghan rulers arrested 200 suspected Lions of Islam involved in attacks against Pakistain, Voice of America (VOA) reported, citing Pak officials privy to the development.

The report said the Afghan rulers have also implemented other "concrete steps" to "neutralise" the terrorist activity.

The details of the crackdown on the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain (TTP) were shared in bilateral talks they hosted last week in Kabul with a high-level delegation from Islamabad.

The talks took place after four soldiers embraced martyrdom while repulsing terrorist attacks on two Pakistain Army check posts located near the Afghanistan border in the general area Kalash, District Chitral, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on September 6.

"On 6 September 2023, a large group of faceless myrmidons equipped with the latest weapons, attacked two Pak military posts located closer to Pakistain Afghanistan border in general area Kalash, District Chitral," a statement from the military's media wing read.

During the fire exchange, 12 faceless myrmidons "were sent to hell", while a large number of the Lions of Islam were critically injured, as per the ISPR statement.

The Afghan Taliban "arrested 200 TTP cadres returning from the Chitral attack. They are now behind bars," VOA quoted an official as saying on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to publicly interact with the media.

He added that de facto Afghan authorities were in the process of relocating other TTP members away from the border with Pakistain.

"But we have to wait and see the outcome of these steps before drawing any conclusions. So, you have to give them some time to consolidate these measures," the official remarked.

Pakistain's special representative on Afghanistan, Asif Durrani, led the delegation to Kabul, with senior military officials also accompanying him. Officials in Islamabad at the time described as "promising" their "extensive" discussions with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and his team.

Somalia Military court sentences Al-Shabaab militants
[Garowe] Three al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
Lions of Islam were on Wednesday sentenced by a military court in Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
, the northern state of Somalia, which is regarded as the most stable region in the shaky Horn of Africa nation, which has been fighting to stabilize for the last three decades since the start of civil war.

After the trial, the court sentenced Mohammed Deeq Salad Abdi to 20 years, Ismail Daud Jirow Harfanay to 30 years, and Abdulkhadir Abukar Sheikh Mohammed to 15 years. Evidence against them for being members of the al-Shabaab Lions of Islam was overwhelming, the court ruled.

Documentary evidence submitted by prosecutors revealed how the three men were responsible for explosives in Galkayo, a town that borders Puntland and Galmadug states in central Somalia, necessitating the decision by military court to send them to jail for various sentences.

The court also determined that they had affiliations with al-Shabaab networks, some of whose members have already been executed by the court, while others remain incarcerated. The sentencing comes at a time when Somalia is fighting violent mostly peaceful extremism in central and southern parts of the country.

According to prosecutors, the three men confessed to close association with the al-Shabaab hard boys, but their lawyers insisted that they were coerced to admit crimes that they had not committed. Military courts have proved to be reliable and efficient in the delivery of justice within Somalia.

Six months ago, the Puntland military court executed 13 Lions of Islam who were members of both al-Shabaab and Islamic State

terror groups. The region has been candid in the fight against al-Shabaab hard boys, stretching it further by training and maintaining a strong regional security force.

The outcome of the case would significantly boost the fight against al-Shabaab, with some members also switching allegiance to the government of Somalia due to ongoing operations, analysts say. al-Shabaab is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.

Twin Al-Shabaab morning car bomb attack targets Somalia
Yesterday there was an attack on Dhusamareeb town. Today there are more — it’s a popular place.
[Garowe] Two twin explosions targeted Dhusamareb town on Thursday morning, the regional administrative capital of Galmadug, where President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been temporarily operating from as he steers the final assault on the al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
hard boyz across the country.

One of the earth-shattering kabooms targeted the road leading to the town's main airport, which is said to be busy given the number of dignitaries and military officers who use it. The attackers used a car to detonate bombs along the route, causing massive damages on the way according to eyewitnesses.

The second SVBIED targeted the checkpoint within the town, forcing soldiers to fire indiscriminately as they pursued the attackers, witnesses added. The attack caused massive damage to property but there is no official confirmation of the number of casualties, sources said.

While the planners are yet to be exposed, embattled al-Shabaab hard boyz engineered the attack given the recent crackdown targeting them in central regions. The Somali National Army [SNA] has been moving around pursuing the hard boyz in Galmadug and HirShabelle states.

Interestingly, Dhusamareb has been the temporary base of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as he continues mobilizations against al-Shabaab. The al-Shabaab hard boy group grabbed credit for the two explosions but did not immediately reveal their target at the time of going on air.

Another attack? More on yesterday’s attack? Not enough informationto be clear to me:

Britain
Mohamad al Bared guilty of terror offence after designing 'kamikaze' drone for ISIS
[Yahoo] An academic inspired by Russian attacks in Ukraine to design and build a "kamikaze" drone for ISIS has been found guilty of a terror offence.

Mohamad al Bared, 26, a PhD engineering student from Coventry, adapted a fixed-wing drone to deliver an explosive warhead over a distance of 8km.

He copied the design of a Tomahawk missile and produced the wings on a 3D printer, sending weekly updates to ISIS, so they could be replicated.

The mechanical engineering graduate was remanded in jug after being found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of preparing acts of terrorism between January 2022 and January this year, and will be sentenced at a later date.

Al Bared, whose parents were both doctors, completed an engineering degree at Coventry University, a master's degree at Warwick University and he was studying for a PhD at Birmingham University, while also teaching undergraduates.

He was described by Michelle Heeley KC as a "mild-mannered academic", while friends said he was "kind and thoughtful" and a keen gardener, who regularly shared fruit and vegetables from his allotment.

But behind closed doors he was downloading ISIS beheading videos, and reading ISIS magazines and their newsletters.

"They show a mindset, someone who revels in violence, supports the killing of non-believers, and who is actively planning to travel to where Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
needs him," Ms Heeley said.

Al Bared had designed a "kamikaze" single-use drone, designed to fly into a crowd, a building or a dam, taking inspiration from Russia's attacks in Ukraine, the prosecutor told the court.

It had capacity to carry a thermos flask of chemical weapons
...have not been used since WWI except for in Iraq, by the late, unlamented Saddam Hussein and in Syria, but really, honest, not by the Syrian government. And in Germany in WWII, but that was against civilians. Lots of them, just one of many reasons Hitler's also late and unlamented...
or explosives that could have killed multiple people if it was flown into a crowd.

"It was a prototype being developed, something that could easily be built in the field, by the 'brothers', each drone being sent on its way to kill innocent people," said Ms Heeley.

"There were reports about how far it could fly, about the technical details, about the explosive head. This wasn't a drone that he was developing for fun, this was a weapon."

His parents were both in court as al Bared was found guilty of preparing acts of terrorism by researching and developing an unmanned aerial vehicle, sharing technical design details and registering a UK company as false cover for travel abroad to join ISIS.

Det Chief Supt Mark Payne, head of Counter-Terrorism Policing West Midlands, said al Bared was a "really, really dangerous individual who was quite some way towards helping to instigate an attack by ISIS".

He said he believed the drone was a "proof of concept to enable them to upskill their assets and deliver attacks in a different way."

"Anybody who has the qualifications and the knowledge and the skills that he has, that gives them a dimension that they don't seem currently to possess," he said.

"He's a prized asset and somebody who, I'm sure, would be very valuable to them."

Suspected Facilitator of Illegal Immigration Arrested after Migrant's Tragic Death in English Channel
[OneIndia] The UK National Crime Agency announced the arrest of a 21-year-old Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
ese man suspected to be involved in an incident where a woman died attempting to cross the English Channel. The suspect is believed to have piloted a boat that reached UK waters. The case is being investigated by both French and British authorities.

The UK National Crime Agency reported on Wednesday that a 21-year-old Sudanese man has been apprehended in connection with the investigation into the death of a woman attempting to cross the English Channel. The arrest occurred in Dover, a southern English port town, where the man is currently held under suspicion of illegal entry and facilitating illicit immigration.

Authorities believe that this individual may have piloted the small boat that reached UK waters on Tuesday. This development follows after authorities in Calais, northern La Belle France, discovered an unidentified woman's body washed up on their shores. Both countries are now collaborating closely to bring those responsible for this tragic event to justice.

The Pas-de-Calais regional administration identified the dear departed as a 24-year-old migrant from Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
. She was found dead at Bleriot-Plage beach after reportedly falling from a boat during her perilous attempt to traverse the English Channel. French authorities are currently leading an investigation into this incident with support from British law enforcement agencies.

Craig Turner, deputy director of Britannia’s National Crime Agency, expressed his commitment towards identifying those involved in this unfortunate incident. He emphasized collaboration between both nations' respective law enforcement agencies and highlighted their common goal - bringing those responsible for such tragedies to justice.

This incident underscores British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government’s increasingly punitive approach towards unauthorized arrivals by sea or other non-conventional means. While human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
advocates argue that these individuals are often fleeing dire circumstances and should be treated with empathy and respect, governments like Sunak's assert that stricter border controls are necessary for national security purposes.

In conclusion, the arrest of a 21-year-old Sudanese man in connection with the death of an Eritrean migrant attempting to cross the English Channel has once again brought issues surrounding immigration and border control into sharp focus. As investigations continue, it remains to be seen what impact this incident will have on existing UK policies and attitudes towards illegal immigration.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
A resident of Stavropol was found guilty of preparing an explosion
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] A court in Rostov-on-Don found Anatoly Ermolaev guilty of planning an explosion in the Stavropol region and sentenced him to 11 years in prison.

The "Caucasian Knot" wrote that on April 25, 2022, the FSB published a video in which security forces detained a suspect in preparing a terrorist attack at a bus station in Stavropol. In the video, the detainee admits that he joined the ranks of the Islamic State* and was planning a terrorist attack.

The intelligence services are motivated to spread falsified reports about the detention of alleged terrorists in the Stavropol region to improve reporting and for propaganda purposes, journalist Elena Suslova and human rights activist Arsen Sarkisov suggested, commenting then on two reports from security forces within one month about the detention of alleged terrorists. Valery Ledovskoy, coordinator of the Center for Civil Initiatives of the North Caucasus Federal District, called a warning about the consequences of participation in radical organizations as a likely goal of such propaganda.

The Southern District Military Court sentenced Anatoly Ermolaev in the case of preparing a terrorist attack, the press service of the FSB Directorate for Stavropol reported today. “Ermolaev, having voluntarily become a supporter of the international terrorist organization Islamic State, banned in Russia, planned to carry out a terrorist attack by blowing up one of the transport infrastructure facilities of the Stavropol Territory,” Interfax quoted the agency’s report today.

The department's statement indicates that Ermolaev was detained in April 2022 while attempting to commit a crime. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison, with the first three years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a maximum security penal colony, with a fine of 200.000 rubles.

As follows from the case file on the website of the Southern District Military Court, Ermolaev’s case came to court in April, 14 court hearings were held, and the verdict was announced today.

Turkey rescues and detains 70 Afghan refugees
[KhaamaPress] Ottoman Turkish media reports that the coastal guards of this country have rescued 70 Afghan refugees in the Canakkale area and detained 41 other "illegal" immigrants colonists.

On Wednesday, Ottoman Turkish Anadolu Agency cited Ottoman Turkish coastal guard forces reporting that these individuals were detained and rescued from the Ayvacik town, also known as "Canakkale."

According to reports, some of these refugees were aboard a rubber boat, which the Ottoman Turkish coastal guards identified and apprehended.

The news bulletin states that 70 illegal immigrants colonists of Afghan nationality, who had been driven into Ottoman Turkish territorial waters by Greek forces on a rubber boat, were rescued and brought to the shore.

It should be noted that these individuals were transferred to the migration office of the Canakkale district in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
after going through legal procedures.

Previously, Ottoman Turkish security forces had reported the detention of over a hundred "illegal" refugees, including Afghan citizens, in Edirne.

According to reports, Turkey has detained at least four thousand Afghan refugees from various cities since the beginning of this year.

This comes when the Ottoman Turkish government has emphasized its efforts to combat illegal immigration.

India-Pakistan
Bombing in Pakistan kills dozens at Muslim celebration
[FoxNews] At least 52 people were killed in a suicide bombing attack in southwestern Pakistan on Friday, authorities said.

Authorities say a bombing attack in Pakistan killed at least 52 people and injured nearly 70 others near a mosque at a rally celebrating the birth of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

A powerful bomb detonated near a mosque at an event celebrating the birthday of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad in southwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing at least 52 people and injuring nearly 70 others, authorities say.

The blast, which authorities said was a suicide bombing, occurred in Mastung, a district in Baluchistan province, where around 500 people had gathered for a procession to celebrate the birth anniversary of Muhammad. Muslims hold rallies and distribute free meals to people on the occasion, which is known as Mawlid an-Nabi.

TV footage and social media videos showed the aftermath of the bombing. An open area near the mosque was strewn with the shoes of the dead and wounded. People were seen rushing the injured to receive medical care, and a state of emergency has been declared at local hospitals, which have issued calls for blood donations, the Associated Press reported.

Several of those injured in the blast were taken to the hospital in critical condition, government administrator Atta Ullah said. Abdul Rasheed, the District Health Officer in Mastung, said 30 bodies were taken to one hospital and 22 others were counted at a second hospital.

"The bomber detonated himself near the vehicle of the Deputy Superintendent of Police," Munir Ahmed, the deputy inspector general of police, told Reuters.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes amid a surge in activity by militant groups in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Taliban is known to target security forces, but it distanced itself from the attack.
“Wudn’t us!”
The group, which has carried out some of the bloodiest attacks inside Pakistan since its founding in 2007, claims it does not target places of worship or civilians.
A lie, of course, but of course they would say so.
Another blast Friday hit a mosque located on the premises of a police station in Hangu, a district in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, injuring seven people, a local police officer told the Associated Press.

He said the mud-brick mosque collapsed due to the impact and rescuers were attempting to remove debris and pull worshipers out of the rubble. Police have not yet determined the cause of that blast.

There were around 40 people worshiping inside the mosque, mostly police officers, when the blast went off.

NIA Raids 50 Locations In Khalistani Nexus Probe
[OneIndia] The National Investigation Agency is conducting a large-scale operation involving searches at 50 sites in six diverse areas related to the Khalistan-Gangster connection. Reportedly, the agency's agenda includes capturing hawala operatives and logistics supervisors linked to gangsters affiliated with Khalistan.

The raids are currently taking place in several states, including 30 locations in Punjab, 13 in Rajasthan, 4 in Haryana, 2 in Uttarakhand, and 1 in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh each.

Earlier, the agency disclosed a list of 19 absconding Khalistani murderous Moslems located in the UK, US, Canada, Dubai, Pakistain, and other nations, whose properties would be seized, as per sources.

The NIA seized the assets of identified terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who is part of the prohibited pro-Khalistani organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). Reports suggest that these 19 absconders will face legal consequences under the UAPA anti-terrorist legislation, as they are charged with spearheading anti-India activities from overseas.

The NIA declared a reward of Rs 10 lakh each for information related to alleged murderous Moslems Harwinder Singh Sandhu, also known as Rinda, and Lakhbir Singh Sandhu, known as Landa. They are purportedly connected to the prohibited group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), which is charged with fostering terror activities in India.

The NIA has increased its efforts against pro-Khalistan terrorists, and have offered a monetary reward of Rs 5 lakh for information on three accomplices from BKI. These individuals are Parminder Singh Kaira from Ferozpur, Satnam Singh, and Yadvinder Singh from Tarn Taran in Punjab.

The NIA has stated that there are four individuals sought in relation to a case filed earlier this year. This case involves the BKI's actions of terrorism, which intended to disrupt India's peaceful society and incite fear in Punjab.

Online posts falsely claim villages in Chitral are under TTP control
[GEO.TV] On September 6, two military checkposts in Pakistain’s Chitral district came under attack by a large group of snuffies belonging to the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain.

Soon after the festivities between Pak soldiers and the gang, viral posts began alleging that snuffies had taken control of two villages and several military checkposts in Chitral.

The claims are baseless.

CLAIM
"70 Mighty Pak Army officers have been killed," wrote a social media user on X, formerly known as Twitter, on September 7, "While two villages and several military checkposts have been captured."

"The Taliban have attacked the district of Chitral," alleged a post on September 9, "As per the latest information, 40 Pak soldiers have been killed, 92 captured and two villages are also under their control."

A similar claim was shared here on Facebook.

FACT
Four officials in Chitral have confirmed that no village or area in Chitral is currently under the control of terrorists. They further add that five soldiers were martyred in the attack, and not 40 or 70 as was being claimed online.

"The situation is completely normal," Muhammad Ali Khan, the deputy commissioner of Lower Chitral, told Geo Fact Check over the phone, "Markets and the university is open. Foreigners and locals can easily move around in the area."

Khan further rubbished that any area was under the control of the terrorists.

"The snuffies were pushed back [across the border into Afghanistan] the same day," he added.

Dr. Muhammad Atif Jalib, the assistant commissioner headquarters in Chitral, also backed Khan’s statement.

"All the information [about areas being captured] is fake news," he added.

Separately, Geo Fact Check contacted Ikram Ullah, the district police officer in Lower Chitral, who also said that all markets and schools were open.

"There is nothing to worry about," he added, "I am saying this responsibly, as a police brass hat."

Osama Cheema, the assistant commissioner in the Darosh Tehsil in Chitral, also denied that snuffies had taken over any area in the mountainous district.

US accuses Iranian naval forces of aiming laser at American helicopter in Gulf
[IsraelTimes] Iranian naval forces repeatedly aimed a laser at an American military helicopter during a routine flight in international airspace over the Gulf, the US military says today.

The helicopter — an AH-1Z Viper — is attached to a unit deployed on the USS Bataan amphibious assault ship, which was sent to the region as part of American efforts to deter seizures of commercial tanker ships by Tehran.

Iranian "vessels shone a laser multiple times at the aircraft while in flight" on Wednesday, front man Commander Rick Chernitzer says in a statement.

"These are not the actions of a professional maritime force. This unsafe, unprofessional, and irresponsible behavior by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy risks US and partner nation lives and needs to cease immediately," Chernitzer adds.

The US military says Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has either seized or attempted to take control of nearly 20 internationally flagged ships in the region over the past two years.

There have been a series of such incidents since then-US president Donald Trump

Leb military court sentences IS group official to 160 years in prison
[NAHARNET] A Lebanese military court has sentenced an official with the murderous Moslem Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group to 160 years in prison for carrying out deadly attacks against security forces and planning others targeting government buildings and crowded civilian areas, judicial officials said Wednesday.

The officials said Imad Yassin, a Paleostinian in his 50s, confessed to all 11 charges against him, including joining a "terrorist organization," committing crimes in Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
's largest Paleostinian refugee camp of Ain el-Helweh, shooting at Lebanese soldiers, and transporting weapons and munitions for krazed killer groups.

Yassin, also known as Imad Akl, said he was planning several other attacks, including blowing up two main power stations, the headquarters of a major local television station in Beirut, killing a leading politician, as well as planning attacks on hotels north of Beirut, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
Ambitious...
Before joining IS, Yassin was a member of other krazed killer Islamic groups, includingo al-Qaeda-linked Jund al-Sham, which is still active in Ain el-Helweh. In later years, he became IS' top official in the camp.

Yassin was detained in Ain el-Helweh, near the port city of Sidon, six years ago and has been held since.
Not the best time to be living at state expense. Possibly a Turkish prison would be a step up...
The total 11 sentences that he received count to up to 160 years in prison, the officials said.

The session during which he was sentenced started Monday night and lasted until the early hours of Tuesday, the officials said. The news about his sentence became public on Wednesday.

At the height of its rise in Iraq and Syria after it declared a caliphate in 2014, IS grabbed credit for deadly attacks in different parts of Lebanon that left scores of people dead. Lebanese troops launched a major operation in 2017 during which they captured IS-held areas along the Lebanon-Syria border.

#1  "Why does Ukraine need to attack Syria?"
There are people in Ukraine who would love to bomb any russian military target, anywhere.
Counterproductive to say the least.
