in 2018, Racine's suburban sprawl on the edge of Lake Michigan became a source of high caliber weapons for one of Mexico's top fentanyl trafficking gangs, the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG).
The cartel exploited permissive federal and state-level gun control rules to buy some of the most powerful weapons available to American civilians, according to two former agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and two other sources, all with knowledge of the investigation.
Members of a local family, working with a cousin in Mexico, enlisted friends and relatives who bought guns on their behalf in Racine and transported them to California and south across the border, according to an indictment from Wisconsin's Eastern District Court unsealed in February.
Their clients included a hit squad reporting to CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera, better known as 'El Mencho,' according to Chris Demlein, one of the former ATF agents.
The Racine case unlocked 'the most prolific CJNG firearms trafficking network ever discovered,' said Demlein, who until 2021 served as a senior special agent with ATF and oversaw a multi-agency arms trafficking project that coordinated dozens of investigations.
The traffickers in Racine and connected cells in two other locations bought more than $600,000 of high-end military-style firearms in under a year, internal ATF documents allege. It seemed like an unprecedented shopping spree, said Tim Sloan, the other former ATF investigator. Sloan was the first to trace a CJNG gun to Racine.
Racine was just the tip of the iceberg. The city was a key part of a CJNG firearms network that bought hundreds of guns from more than a dozen U.S. states, specializing in semi-automatic .50 caliber rifles and FN SCAR assault rifles designed for U.S. special forces, internal ATF reports obtained by Reuters allege.
ATF dubbed the Wisconsin case 'Grin and Barrett,' after Barrett, a Tennessee-based weapons maker whose powerful .50 caliber firearms were among those trafficked by the network. Now a unit of Australia's NIOA Group, Barrett did not respond to detailed requests for comment for this report.
ATF spokesperson Kristina Mastropasqua declined to comment on what she described as an open case. Mastropasqua said preventing cross-border firearms trafficking was an ATF priority and new powers had led to 250 people being charged since last year.

[SUDANTRIBUNE] Sudanese army warplanes launched a series of airstrikes on Thursday, targeting several military locations of the paramilitary forces in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state.
The airstrikes, which are the first after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gained control of the city, reportedly resulted in civilian casualties and property damage.
The RSF took over the command of the 16th Infantry Division of the Sudanese army on October 26, effectively consolidating their control over South Darfur.
This development followed fierce fighting that forced a significant portion of Nyala’s residents to flee. Despite a lull in military operations over the past month, many neighbourhoods in central Nyala remain devoid of residents.
A statement issued by the RSF’s spokesperson accused the Sudanese army of carrying out a “brutal massacre” by bombing Nyala, causing the deaths and injuries of dozens of civilians and the destruction of their homes. The statement further alleged that the Sudanese army deliberately targeted civilians in an attempt to displace them.
Military sources, also speaking to Sudan Tribune, claimed that the airstrike was aimed at gathering sites of RSF fighters who were preparing to be deployed to military operations in Khartoum and North Darfur state. They estimated the number of these fighters to be around 6,000.

No one has bothered to report on who is financing this war. If history is used, the Sudanese army composed of Nile River Arabs is likely being financed by its traditional allies, China and Iran. The RSF must be receiving support from the Gulf states through Libya and Chad, the traditional sources of arms for western Sudan. WHAT ELSE DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE ARRESTS?
Germany's federal prosecutors' office, based in Karslruhe, said in its statement that the men were in contact "via a close connection" to the "leadership of the military wing of Hamas."
One of the main charges they face is membership of a terrorist organization. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by Germany, Israel, the US, the EU and other governments.
But Sherlocks said their arrest was ultimately tied to a prior Hamas cache of weapons designated for potential future attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe.
Oh? Good thing they were declared a terrorist organization.
By early 2023 at the latest, one of the men residing in Berlin had been assigned with finding the underground cache and moving the weapons to the Berlin area, prosecutors allege. The three Berlin-based suspects had reportedly since sought to locate the weapons several times, including with help from the man arrested in Rotterdam.
Investigators said they did not believe the plot had a direct connection to Hamas' October 7 attacks or Israel's subsequent response, instead saying their investigations showed the plans preceded these events.

SIMILAR ARRESTS IN DENMARK ON THURSDAY
Earlier on Thursday, Danish police said they prevented a terror attack and arrested four people. Three suspects were arrested in Denmark, and a fourth was arrested in the Netherlands.

[MSN -Repository] A 13-year-old has been convicted of juvenile charges tied to an online plot to "burn down and shoot up" Temple Israel, a Jewish synagogue.
The Plain Township boy pleaded true, the juvenile equivalent of guilty, to misdemeanor counts of inducing panic and disorderly conduct during a court appearance Friday.
Stark County Family Court Judge Jim James then sentenced the boy to a year of probation, according to a court document filed in the case.
During the next year, he's not permitted to use the internet without supervision. He has to read a book about Carl Lutz, the Swiss diplomat credited with saving the lives of tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust in Budapest, Hungary, during World War II. The boy then must submit a book report to the juvenile probation department.
The 13-year-old also has to continue to get counseling with a licensed therapist.
BOY IN TEMPLE ISRAEL PLOT GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE
The judge suspended a 90-day sentence at the Multi-County Juvenile Attention Center. If the boy violates the terms of his probation, he could be ordered to serve the remaining sentence. The judge credited the boy with 10 days the youth served at Multi-County after his September arrest.
An upcoming hearing in the case, initially scheduled for Wednesday, was canceled.
Friday's hearing, which was not scheduled as of a couple of days ago, took place a day after Stark County Family Court Judge Michelle Cordova signed an order sealing, except for his initials, the boy's name or any information that could lead to him being identified from public disclosure, including the name of his mother.
The order came as the national media took interest in the case amid national scrutiny of antisemitism across the country since the Hamas ...not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,... attacks in Israel on Oct. 7 that killed about 1,200. The Stark County Prosecutor's Office sought the order.
TEMPLE ISRAEL ONLINE ATTACK DISCUSSED ON DISCORD
On Thursday, the Stark County Sheriff's Office released an incident report that shows that an FBI agent and two county sheriff's deputies met with the boy and his mother on Sept. 7 at their Plain Township home.
The agent said he had learned the boy was discussing with an unknown person in Washington plans to burn down and conduct a shooting at Temple Israel in Canton. The boy had obtained a map of the synagogue.
The boy confirmed to the agent that he was a member of more than one antisemitic group in Discord, according to the sheriff's office report. The deputies then arrested the boy.
It's not clear if the person in Washington was also questioned or arrested.
The group-chat app platform Discord later said it had reported the discussions the boy was having online to the FBI.
The deputies advised the mom that the boy was not to return to school until the school district superintendent spoke with the boy and the mom. It's not clear if the boy has returned to school.

[JPost] Two drones penetrated Israeli territory on Saturday, local and military sources reported. One of the drones was downed, the other crashed and started a fire.
Alarms sounded in Israel's north on Saturday morning indicating the intrusion of hostile aircraft into Israeli airspace.
The Upper Galilee Regional Council later confirmed that a drone was identified in Israel's Hula Valley region.
The drone reportedly crashed in the Margaliot area.
The IDF subsequently released a statement on the event, noting that air defense systems intercepted a drone that had infiltrated into Israeli territory from Lebanon. The IDF also confirmed the the Upper Galilee Regional Council report, stating that a second drone crashed into the Margaliot area.
The IDF responded to the drone infiltrations with artillery fire at targets in Lebanese territory.
Later, the Israeli Northern District’s fire and rescue services said that the drone that had crashed in the Margaliot area had caused a fire in a local building.
Two firefighting teams subsequently worked to extinguish the blaze, managing to do so as they worked alongside IDF personnel at the scene to search for injured individuals and prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby forest.

[Ynet] Israel's ambassador to the UN late on Friday, showed the plenum images of the Iron Dome missile defense system, intercepting missiles aimed at Jerusalem and said it was Israel who protected the Al Aqsa mosque from Hamas fire.
The terror group launched eight rockets at Jerusalem and surrounding areas on Friday for the first time in a month. The Iron Dome intercepted some of the rockets and no injuries were reported.
"Today Hamas proved that murdering Israelis is even more important than preserving Islamic holy sites the claim to protect," Erdan said. "Just as ISIS was willing to destroy mosques, Hamas — ISIS is willing to blow up Al Aqsa and so many of you are willing to defend them."
He said a so-called humanitarian cease-fire is a white wash that only aims to keep Hamas in power, as he criticized the UN resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. "This resolution has a distorted agenda," he said. "This resolution aims to keep Hamas in power, period."

Hagari said the IDF bears full responsibility for the "tragic incident," which took place on Friday morning, "in an area where the soldiers encountered many terrorists, including jacket wallahs."
Hagari named the hostages as Yotam Haim, who was kidnapped by Hamas ...one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,... from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, and Samar Fouad Talalka, who was kidnapped from Nir Am. The third hostage was later named as Alon Shamriz, also from Kfar Aza.
The incident occurred in the Gaza neighborhood that has seen some of the heaviest fighting in recent days.
Political leaders were quick to express their shock at the incident but stressed that the IDF would implement the lessons learned and push ahead with their offensive — even as family members of the hostages increased calls to pursue a new ceasefire that could lead to a deal to free their loved ones,
Haim, 28, was a drummer for heavy metal band Persephore. He was last seen in a video he took on the morning of October 7, showing himself in the front door of his Kfar Aza home, before he was kidnapped to Gaza.
Talalka, 22, was working in the Kibbutz Nir Am hatchery, where he often did the weekend shifts, when Hamas Lions of Islam stormed the kibbutz.
Shamriz, 26, a computer engineering student, was kidnapped from his Kibbutz Kfar Aza home on October 7.
Asked how the hostages were able to escape Hamas captivity, Hagari said the military believes that "the three fled or were abandoned by the Lions of Islam who held them captive" as IDF forces closed in.
Shejaiya in northern Gaza has long been seen as a key Hamas stronghold, home to some of its most elite forces and heaviest fortifications. The area where the hostages were killed was close to the scene of a deadly battle on Wednesday where nine soldiers, including two senior commanders, were killed.
The military believes Hamas’s Shejaiya battalion’s command and control is largely disrupted, and the terror group is operating in the area in a less organized manner, with smaller squads. According to Hebrew media reports, Gazook civilians are prohibited from the Shejaiya area, where Hamas often uses unarmed civilians as scouts.
IDF forces have been battling Hamas in the Gaza Strip since late October. War erupted after the terror group’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 Lions of Islam burst across the border into Israel from the Gaza Strip by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing over 240 hostages of all ages, mostly civilians.
In response, Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas, and launched a wide-scale offensive in Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has claimed that more than 18,700 Paleostinians have been killed since the start of the war. However, it was a brave man who first ate an oyster... the number cannot be independently verified and is believed to include some 7,000 Hamas and Hamas-affiliated terror operatives as well as civilians killed by misfired Paleostinian rockets.
It is believed that 132 hostages remain in Gaza — not all of them alive — after 105 civilians were released from Hamas captivity during a weeklong truce in late November. The IDF has confirmed the deaths of 20 of those still held by Hamas, citing new intelligence and findings obtained by troops operating in Gaza.
In his statement, Hagari said that "after the shooting, during a scan and examination, an immediate suspicion arose regarding the identity of the dead, and their bodies were quickly transferred for examination in Israel, where the hostages were identified."
"This is a sad and painful event for all of us, and the IDF bears responsibility for everything that happened," he said.
Hagari said the IDF was already investigating the incident, "which took place in a battle zone where the troops encountered many Lions of Islam in recent days, and today, and fought hard battles," he said.
"In some cases, suicide bombers were encountered, and also attacks in which Lions of Islam tried to lure our forces and draw them into an ambush. Shortly after the tragic incident, another encounter with Lions of Islam took place near the scene of the incident," Hagari said.
He said the IDF was still working to "gather the facts and clarify the details of the incident." Meanwhile, ...back at the laboratory, Igor and Oleg were discussing what the quickest way might be to deal with the monster... new protocols for identifying hostages were transferred to ground forces, "to do everything to prevent another tragic event like this."
"The IDF expresses deep sorrow for the disaster and shares in the grief of the families. May their memory be blessed," Hagari added.
Political leaders expressed their sorrow at the incident but vowed to press on.
The mayor of the Bedouin town of Rahat, where Talalka was a resident, mourned the mistaken killing of the hostages.
"Such bitter news: Bedouins and Jews were taken hostage together, managed to flee together in an effort to continue their lives — and ended their lives together in this very tragic event," Ata Abu Madighem told Army Radio.
ROCKETS AT JERUSALEM
Hours earlier, several rockets fired from Gaza were intercepted in the Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh area, in the first barrage on the capital in over a month. Eyewitnesses reported at least three interceptions by the Iron Dome rocket defense system, while later reports indicated a total of six intercepts. Magen David Adom said one rocket fell in open ground in the Beit Shemesh area, where henhouses sustained damage. Falling shrapnel also hit a high-voltage wire.
Hamas’s military wing grabbed credit for the barrage, as footage circulated on social media apparently showing one of the rockets landing near a hospital in the Paleostinian city of Ramallah, in the West Bank, just north of Jerusalem.
Earlier Friday, the IDF announced that troops operating in Gaza had recovered the bodies of two soldiers and one civilian hostage who were taken captive by Hamas Lions of Islam on October 7. The military also announced the deaths of three more soldiers as heavy fighting continued in the Strip, pushing the toll of fallen troops in the ground offensive against Hamas to 119.
In a visit with troops in Gaza, IDF intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva said that Israel "must continue to pressure the enemy, continue to kill the enemy, continue to destroy the enemy. The campaign has multiple theaters and has months to go."

Years ago (decades, actually) I was told, if taken prisoner and a raid is run on the location, the best thing to do is lay flat and motionless on the ground and wait for the 'mop up' phase before identifing yourself.
Evidently good advice.

I believe it was the movie The Dark Knight where hostages were dressed up as the hostage takers in order to bait them being killed by their rescuers.
Historically, IIRC and IIUC, one of the things the Mongals did (and I'm sure that isn't unique, see Vercengetorix and releasing civilians to be a buffer between themselves and Caesar's troops) was push non-combatants into the no-man's land as meat catchers.

[FoxNews] An attack-turned-shootout on a police station on Friday left 11 people dead and eight others wounded in southeastern Iran, state TV reported.
