An airstrike targets Al-Shabaab in central Somalia
[ShabelleMedia] A fresh Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
was reported in central Somalia targeting al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
base following the visit by US Africa command to Mogadishu last week.

The raid is the second in Galhareeri within 4 days, and it is said that it was targeted at a house where members of the al-Shabaab lived and a center where the group manufactures explosives.

A statement issued by the government said that the attack inflicted a heavy blow on the group, and many members were killed at the same time.

"The militias were dealt a heavy blow in this attack, which was reported by the National Army and the residents, and all the areas where the operation was carried out were razed to the ground. Recently, a terrorist radio station, a car repair garage, and a house where murderous Moslems lived were razed to the ground. "The group is fighting against life," the statement from the government said.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
in the previous attack that took place in Galhareeri last Tuesday, the federal government said that 30 members of al-Shabaab were killed, including leaders, militiamen, journalists, and technicians of the group responsible for making the earth-shattering kabooms, which included foreigners.

Somali troops with the support of foreign allies attack Al-Shabaab base
[ShabelleMedia] The forces of the Federal Government of Somalia with the help of their foreign allies carried out a planned operation in the Buq Aqable area of the Hiran region.

The operation was said to have taken place in a garage where the group used to organize kabooms in the country.

A statement issued by the government said that the operation was successful and many vehicles and members of al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
were leveled at the targeted garage.

The statement from the Somali government did not detail the total number of casualties resulting from the operation that took place today in the Buq Aqable area of the Hiran region, but it is expected that the government will detail it in the next few hours.

This operation coincides with last night a similar operation carried out by the government forces and international friends in a garage and a house where members of al-Shabaab lived in the Galhareeri district of the Galgaduud region.
A useful clarification, indeed. I was concerned.

Sri Lankan fishing trawler seized by Somali pirates: fisheries department
[Garowe] Sri Lanka's fisheries department said on Saturday that a Sri Lankan fishing trawler, with six crew members onboard, has been taken by Somali pirates.

Susantha Kahawatta, director general of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, told the media that the boat was taken in the Arabian Sea.

The multi-day fishing trawler Lorenzo Putha-4 set sail from Sri Lanka on January 12, and the vessel was taken around 1,160 nautical miles away from the Sri Lankan maritime boundary, said Kahawatta.

Sri Lankan authorities do not have any contact with the vessel and the information they have was obtained from other vessels nearby, he said, adding that the Sri Lankan government is taking steps to secure the release of the kidnapped fishermen.

Sudanese army seizes control of strategic Khartoum Bahri Sites in fierce clashes
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Fierce festivities erupted between the Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
ese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum Bahri, north of the capital, on Saturday, marking the most intense fighting in months. Following the festivities, the army seized control of strategic positions previously held by the RSF.

The city of Bahri had largely remained untouched by the ongoing conflict in Khartoum due to the RSF’s firm grip on the area. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
the city’s tranquillity was shattered as the army launched a series of offensive operations against RSF positions across the city.

Military sources informed Sudan Tribune that army units launched a dawn raid on RSF positions in Kadru and surrounding areas, inflicting significant casualties on both personnel and military vehicles.

The sources further revealed that the army successfully captured the main RSF headquarters in the Kadru suburb, along with the al-Jawafa bridge connecting Kadru to the al-Jaili refinery.

The sources also indicated a substantial deployment of army forces from the Signal Corps to Bahri’s Industrial Street and their enhanced presence in neighbourhoods like Napata, al-Droshab, and Samarab, which had historically witnessed a heavy RSF presence. They also reported the involvement of paratroopers in the operations, for the first time since the breakout of the conflict.

Saturday’s attacks aimed to isolate the RSF forces that hold control over the al-Jaili refinery, and to prevent the use of Khartoum Bahri’s farms as launchpads for artillery attacks targetting the Karari military area in Omdurman. According to military experts close to the army, the operation achieved its desired objectives.

Strip. The tanker carried Russian-produced naphtha, a flammable oil, drawing Moscow further into a conflict that so far it had blamed on the US.

Early Saturday, US forces conducted a strike against a Houthi anti-ship missile that was aimed at the Red Sea and prepared to launch, the US military’s Central Command said. That attack came after the USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, had to shoot down a Houthi missile targeting it.

The Marlin Luanda burned for hours in the Gulf of Aden until being extinguished today by its crew of 25 Indian nationals and two Sri Lankans, says Trafigura, a Singapore-based trading firm. No one was injured by the blast, it added.

"We are pleased to confirm that all crew on board the Marlin Luanda are safe and the fire in the cargo tank has been fully extinguished," Trafigura says. "The vessel is now sailing towards a safe harbor."
Courtesy of Skidmark, Yahoo adds:
The Indian navy said its guided missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam was assisting the Marlin Luanda's crew in fighting the fire. It posted images showing the blaze still raging Saturday, likely fueled by the naphtha on board.

The ship, managed by a British firm, is carrying the Russian naphtha bound for Singapore, the company said. It described the flammable oil as being purchased below the price caps set by G7 sanctions placed on Russia over its ongoing war on Ukraine. It wasn't clear what environmental impact the attack had caused.

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed the attack on the Marlin Luanda in a prerecorded statement late Friday, describing it as a “British oil ship.” He insisted such attacks would continue.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea over Israel’s offensive in Gaza against Hamas. But they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for global trade between Asia, the Mideast and Europe.

Meanwhile Saturday, authorities reported a separate incident in which a vessel in the Arabian Sea reported seeing people armed with assault rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade off their vessel.

“The small craft approached within 300 meters (about 985 feet),” the British military's United Kingdom Trade Operations agency said. “The onboard security team fired warning shots and post an exchange of fire, the small craft then retreated.”

It said all those onboard were safe. The private security firm Ambrey described the incident as involving a “Somali-style” small boat aided by a larger mothership. As the Houthi attacks have escalated, there's been an increase in suspected Somali pirate activity as well.
Even more from The Times of Israel:
The US Central Command says the USS Carney, the French Navy Frigate FS Alsace and Indian Navy Frigate INS Visakhapatnam responded to a “major fire” aboard a tanker carrying a flammable chemical off Yemen earlier Saturday, helping the crew douse the dangerous blaze after they had “depleted their organic firefighting capability.”

“Thanks to this rapid response by the US, Indian and French navies, the fire is now extinguished,” CentCom says.

“There were no casualties in the attack, the ship remains seaworthy and has returned to its previous course,” it adds, confirming an earlier statement from Trafigura, a Singapore-based trading firm.

US neutralizes Yemeni Houthi anti-ship missile
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The US military on the night of January 27 attacked an anti-ship missile of the Yemeni Shiite movement Ansar Allah (Houthis), which was preparing to be launched in the direction of the Red Sea, US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported.

The message clarifies that she was attacked at approximately 03:45 (which coincides with Moscow time). The command decided to destroy the target, considering that it posed a danger to merchant ships and warships of the US Navy.

As Regnum reported, on January 25, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria announced that Ansar Allah had allegedly hit an American warship with its missile. He clarified that in the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the forces of the movement entered into battle with a whole group of US destroyers and hit them with ballistic missiles.

On the night of January 12, the United States and Britain, with the support of the international coalition, attacked Houthi targets in Yemen with missiles. Washington and London explained their actions by protecting ships that sail in the Red Sea and are under attack by representatives of this Yemeni movement.

Airstrikes in Yemen have targeted drone production centers and weapons depots. US forces hit targets in the cities of Sanaa, Hodeidah, Saad and Dhamar.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova called the strikes on the territory of Yemen carried out by the United States and Britaincomplete disregard for international law. She noted that their goal is to escalate the situation in the region.

The United States, Australia and Canada had already paused funding to the aid agency after Israel said 12 UNRWA employees were involved in the cross-border attack. The agency has opened an investigation into several employees severed ties with them.

The Paleostinian foreign ministry criticised what it described as an Israeli campaign against UNRWA, and the Hamas resistance group condemned the termination of employee contracts "based on information derived from the Zionist enemy."

"The Italian government has suspended financing of the UNRWA after the atrocious attack on Israel on October 7," Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on social media platform X.

Finland also said it suspended funding.

Hussein al-Sheikh, head of the Paleostinians' umbrella political body the Paleostine Liberation Organization (PLO), said cutting support brought major political and relief risks.

"We call on countries that announced the cessation of their support for UNRWA to immediately reverse their decision," he said on X.
Update from the Times of Israel at 5:00 p.m. ET
France said Sunday it was reconsidering its future funding to the UN Palestinian refugee agency, becoming the latest country to make such a move after accusations of staff involvement in the Hamas-led October 7 massacre, while Jordan warned that cutting financial support to UNRWA amounted to “collective punishment.”

“France has not planned a new payment for the first half of 2024 and will decide when the time comes on the action to take together with the United Nations and the main donors,” the French Foreign Ministry said, calling the allegations against UNRWA “exceptionally serious.”

Donors including the US, Germany, Britain, Italy, Australia and Finland announced they had suspended additional funding to the agency, and UNRWA said on Friday it had fired several employees over the unspecified accusations.

Masses evacuate Khan Younis as IDF says many gunmen killed in city
[IsraelTimes] Army releases footage in which evacuating Gazooks are seen chanting ’Down with Hamas
...a regional Iranian catspaw,...
’; alleges the terror group is blocking evacuation ’using threats and violence’.

Masses of Paleostinians were seen fleeing combat areas in western Khan Younis in southern Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Saturday, in videos posted on official social media channels, after the military called for residents to evacuate to the nearby al-Mawasi area. Images showed thousands of civilians fleeing the city on foot.

Israel pressed ahead with its campaign against Hamas in the city, while bad weather hit displaced Paleostinians seeking refuge further north in the battered enclave.

Residents reported heavy aerial and tank fire across Khan Younis, a part of southern Gaza that has become the focus of Israel’s ground offensive against Hamas, and around two main hospitals there.

The IDF said intensive fighting continued in the area as its 98th Division advanced, killing numerous Hamas operatives.

Amid the offensive, the IDF said the division’s Commando Brigade directed an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
against three Hamas operatives who were attempting to plant bombs near the troops. Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch shot Black Bart's gun out of his hand......
the Maglan commando unit raided several Hamas sites in Khan Younis, including a weapons depot, and the Egoz commando unit "eliminated many armed Lions of Islam at close range," the IDF said.

Also in Khan Younis, the IDF said the Givati Brigade killed "a large number" of Hamas operatives in several separate festivities.

The IDF Spokesperson said that the military had opened a "safe humanitarian corridor to allow residents of western Khan Younis to move west from the combat zone to the humanitarian area in al-Mawasi in order to maintain their safety."

"The safe corridor is open every day to evacuate residents, as the IDF avoids targeting civilians in the region during its fight against the terrorist Hamas terror group," the IDF’s Arabic-language front man Avichay Adrae wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, adding that tens of thousands of residents had passed safely through the corridor in recent days.

Adrae also alleged that some Gazook civilians had communicated with the IDF that "Hamas was preventing them from leaving the area using threats and violence," and that soldiers had helped displaced civilians "including the elderly and the sick" during their passage out of Khan Younis.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, known by its acronym COGAT, published a video on Saturday showing hundreds of Gazooks passing through the corridor, chanting "Down with Hamas."

"In recent days, we’ve seen more and more evidence of public criticism voiced by the residents of Gaza against the Hamas terror organization," said the head of COGAT Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian.

"The residents of the Gaza Strip rightly prefer their well-being and the safety of their children over the continued military build-up of Hamas and the acts of terror that harm them and their future," he said in a Facebook post.

On Friday morning, the IDF called on residents of a number of neighborhoods in western Khan Younis to evacuate to southern Gaza as the military’s ground offensive expands.

The IDF’s Arabic-language front man published a map of the zones that need to be evacuated alongside the announcement, including the al-Nasr and al-Amal neighborhoods, the Khan Younis refugee camp (a historical name unrelated to the war), and the city center.

"They besieged us, so we fled," said Tahani al-Najjar, who left Khan Younis with her daughter. "We call on the UN to intervene, to stop the war. Enough of fear and terror!"

Residents and Hamas also reported fighting on Saturday in the central and northern parts of the enclave, where heavy rain flooded the tents of those displaced, forcing some to seek alternative shelter in the middle of the night.

In the largest operation in a month, Israeli forces encircled and pushed through Khan Younis over the past few days, where many Paleostinians sheltered after leaving northern Gaza, the early focus of the war.

The UN estimates that some 1.9 million Gazooks are currently displaced due to the war, with many being forced to find shelter in tent cities or makeshift camps and slums sprouting up in parts of the Strip.

At Khan Younis’s Nasser Hospital, the largest in the city, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said surgical capacity was "virtually non-existent."

The charity said the hospital’s services had "collapsed" and the few staff who remained "must contend with very low supplies that are insufficient to handle mass casualty events."

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 350 patients and 5,000 displaced people remained at the hospital as fighting continued nearby.

The Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy Society said Israeli tanks targeted the al-Amal hospital, another of the city’s few remaining medical facilities, and that it was "under siege with heavy gunfire."

"There is no longer a healthcare system in Gaza," MSF said.

There were 300 to 500 patients trapped at the Nasser hospital with "war-related injuries such as open wounds, lacerations from explosions, fractures and burns."

The Israeli military accuses Hamas of operating from tunnels under Gaza hospitals and of using the medical facilities as command centers. It has issued footage from Hamas tunnels discovered underneath several hospitals.

Vowing to destroy the terror group, Israel launched a wide-scale military campaign, which the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says has killed over 26,000 people and maimed some 64,000 people. The figures are unverified and are believed to include close to 10,000 Hamas operatives Israel said it has killed during fighting in the Strip, as well as civilians killed by misfired Paleostinian rockets.

In a video recording published on Telegram, the female captives accused the Israeli occupation government of neglecting their issue and not caring about their lives.

The prisoners urged their families to hold demonstrations in order to pressure the Israeli government to work for their release.

The prisoners said they flee from one place to another all the time due to the continuous Israeli bombardment, which already killed other Israeli detainees.

They said they feel ashamed of the Israeli government, which lost the war, calling for stopping the war on Gaza immediately and work for their release.
This is whom they’re talking about. Photos of the girls at the link:
Hamas publishes new propaganda clip showing 3 young female hostages in Gaza

[IsraelTimes] Video shows Daniella Gilboa, Karina Ariev and Doron Steinbrecher, who ask that the Israeli government bring them home

The Hamas
...the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,...
terror group published a new propaganda video Friday showing signs of life from three young female hostages held in the Gazoo Strip.

In edited-together clips, the five-minute-long video showed Daniella Gilboa, Karina Ariev and Doron Steinbrecher, who identified themselves and asked the Israeli government to return them home.

Hamas said the video was filmed earlier this week, although it provided no evidence to support the claim.

Gilboa, 19, was in touch with her family on the morning of the attack and sent her boyfriend videos that morning. When Hamas videos appeared later that day, showing three of Gilboa’s friends being taken hostage to Gaza, Gilboa’s family was able to identify her as well.

The parents of Ariev, 19, described speaking to her at 7 a.m. that morning, as she cried, describing a barrage of rockets and gunfire. "She screamed and said she loves us very much," Karina’s mother said in a past interview. "She told us to continue our lives." Later they found a Hamas video publicized on Telegram, in which three young women are laying down in a jeep, surrounded by men speaking in Arabic. Their daughter, Karina, was one of the three, her face maimed and bleeding.

Steinbrecher, 30, was in her Kibbutz Kfar Aza apartment when Hamas holy warriors invaded the kibbutz, killing and kidnapping dozens of residents. The veterinary nurse was in her apartment in the kibbutz housing for younger, single residents, but in touch with her sister and their parents, all of whom also live on the kibbutz. At 10:30 a.m., Doron told her parents that she was scared and that the holy warriors had arrived at her building. She then sent a voice message to her friends in which she said, "They’ve arrived, they have me."

Hamas has previously issued similar videos of hostages it is holding, in what Israel says is psychological warfare.

The previous such video was issued on January 15, and showed hostages Itay Svirsky, Noa Argamani and Yossi Sharabi. Israel announced a day later that Svirsky and Sharabi had been killed in Hamas captivity.

Hamas claimed that the military had targeted a building where three Israeli hostages were being held, killing two of them. Israel said this was a lie.

"The building where they were held was not a target and was not attacked by our forces," Israel Defense Forces front man Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said then.

Israel informed Egypt this evening of its intention to send troops into Rafah and the Philadelphia axis area
[TWITTER]

I can’t find anything about this in either The Times of Israel or Al Ahram. The Jerusalem Post explains in a post in their liveblog:
Israel informed Egypt on Saturday evening of its intention to send troops into Rafah and the Philadelphi Corridor, despite Egypt's firm opposition to such a decision, Maariv reported, citing Sky News Arabia.
And if you can’t trusk Sky News Arabia...
According to the report, Egypt rejected the request.

Head of the State Information Services (SIS) Diaa Rashwan said earlier this week, "It must be strictly emphasized that any Israeli move in this direction will lead to a serious threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations."

In response to a question about Qatar

and Egypt, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday evening that "Relations with Egypt are ongoing and normal between the governments all the time. Each of us has interests; Egypt needs to say certain things. They take care of their interests, and we take care of ours."

Former IDF front man Avi Benyahu also hinted this week in his X account that the IDF may make its way further south, reaching Rafah, Maariv reported.

RUMINT. And I can’t find anything on the story on the main Sky News site, suggesting the home office did not find the evidence as compelling as the Arabia branch did.

I think it's a necessary move to prevent Hamas from rebuilding their armory, but I don’t see evidence at this point that Israel will blockade from the Egyptian side.

Philippine govt soldiers kill 8 suspected Islamic State-linked militants in Mindanao firefight
[BenarNews] Eight suspected Filipino snuffies belonging to a local group allied with Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
faceless myrmidons were killed and four government soldiers maimed in fierce fighting in the southern Philippines on Thursday, the military said Friday. The gun-battle between members of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-Maute) and soldiers with the 103rd Infantry Brigade broke out in the late afternoon in Piagapo, a remote town in Lanao del Sur province, military officials said.

The soldiers were on a mission to hunt down two suspected DI-Maute snuffies who had been identified as the main perpetrators of a bombing that killed four people during a Catholic worship service at a university gymnasium in southern Marawi city in early December.
That would be the attack on Mindanao State University.
According to military officials, the Filipino snuffies were apparently acting under the instructions of the Islamic State, which had earlier owned up to the attack.

"During the military operations the troops killed eight enemies," Brig. Gen. Yegor Rey Baroquillo Jr., commander of the 103rd, told BenarNews. After the firefight, troops retrieved the bodies of the slain bad boys, he said.

Baroquillo said four members of the Scout Rangers, who were maimed in the fighting, were brought to a local hospital. He did not divulge the extent of their wounds.

He said the troops were after the Marawi bombers and that search operations were focused on three Lanao towns believed to be strongholds of the DI-Maute: Pantao Ragat, Poona PIagapo and Munai.

Brig. Gen. Anthon Abrina, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, told BenarNews in a phone interview that "we are on heightened, red alert status following the encounter Thursday evening."

Troop reinforcements have been brought in and several checkpoints were established along the national highway leading to the areas "to ensure the safety of civilians in their respective communities," Abrina said.

The towns in Lanao are near the city of Marawi, where the bombing took place.

Military chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has blamed the DI-Maute group for the bombing, saying it was carried out as Dire Revenge for a military operation elsewhere in the south that left over a dozen snuffies killed.

Two of those killed were identified as Mundi Sawadjaan and Jalandoni Lucsadato. Sawadjaan has been identified as a sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
, another Islamic State-linked group in the southern Philippines.

He was also the nephew of the late Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, who was thought to be the group’s leader before he was killed in 2020. The elder Sawadjaan at one time was also named as the IS leader for the Philippines.

Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan also criminal masterminded a January 2019 bombing at a Catholic church on southern Jolo island that killed 23 people including an Indonesian couple blamed for the suicide kaboom, according to Philippine authorities.

Malaysian defendants in Bali bombings to serve about 5 more years
[BenarNews] A U.S. military judge ruled Friday that two Malaysians linked to the 2002 Bali bombings are to serve about five more years in prison in addition to the two decades they have been detained. The announcement at the military court in Guantanamo Bay came shortly after a panel of military officers recommended 23-year sentences for the pair, who last week pleaded guilty to supporting roles in Indonesia’s worst-ever terror attack that left 202 people dead. The lighter punishment reflects terms of a plea deal struck late last year, details of which were revealed in Judge Wesley Braun’s announcement Friday.

The five-member panel deliberated for about two hours after hearing final statements, .

On Friday night, it remained unclear whether Mohammed Farik Bin Amin and Mohammed Nazir Bin Lep would complete their sentences at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba or elsewhere. chief prosecutor Col. George C. Kraehe did not immediately respond to a question about this from BenarNews.

The two defendants and the relatives of their victims showed no emotion as the panel issued its recommendation inside the nondescript building that houses the military court, or moments later when the judge handed down his ruling.

The two men have been incarcerated at Guantanamo since they were flown here 17 years ago from a CIA black site overseas, and it was only in August 2021 that they finally got their first day in court here.

Bin Lep and bin Amin made statements on Thursday that their hearts had changed during more than 20 years in jug — first in Thailand following their 2003 arrests, then at a CIA black site before arriving at the base in Cuba in 2006.

The two wore Islamic garb earlier in the week but appeared in court on Friday in blazers and button-down shirts. Their sentences take effect from last week, when Braun, a U.S. Air Force officer, accepted their guilty pleas.

Delivering the prosecution’s closing arguments Friday, Kraehe said he spoke for the victims’ families — those watching in the hearing room and thousands of others who could not attend.

Addressing the defendants’ claims that they were tortured under the American government’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation (RDI) policy, Kraehe said that occurred years ago. They have been treated humanely at Guantanamo, he said, telling the panel members that they were not tasked with judging the RDI policy.

"Our task is to give the victims justice," he said. "The accused are not the victims here."

Kraehe told of how bin Amin and bin Lep had "heeded the late Osama bin Laden
...... who doesn't live anywhere anymore......
’s call" in the 1990s. They headed to Afghanistan in 2000, trained to participate in violent mostly peaceful jihad and swore an oath to bin Laden after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

"This is what they wanted, what they trained for," Kraehe said.

During that time, the pair met Indonesian Encep Nurjaman (also known as Hambali
...real name Riduan Isamuddin, close personal friend of Osama bin Laden, one of the founders of Jemaah Islamiyah and the planner of the 2002 Bali bombings. He was captured with the help of a mid-Eastern intel service, shipped to Guantanamo to rot but he'll likely be released eventually because that was a long time ago and we were all so much younger then...
), the suspected main planner of the 2002 Bali bombings. Their cases were separated in 2023, with Hambali’s lawyer saying that his client did not expect to be given a similar plea deal.

Last week, bin Amin and bin Lep pleaded guilty to murder, conspiracy and three other charges.

Christine Funk, the lead attorney for bin Amin, said the worst thing he ever did was take money in December 2002 — two months after the Oct. 12 bombings — to hide conspirators. That conspiracy led to the pleas on murder and four other charges.

"You become responsible for everyone’s actions," she said.

She acknowledged the victims’ suffering while pleading her case for bin Amin.

"Because we believe the pain of the victims can co-exist with the rights of the defendant," she told the panel.

Funk, who wears a headscarf in court in deference to her Moslem client, discussed the torture he claims he was subjected to following his arrest in Thailand and during his time at the CIA black site. She used a few of his sketches presented in court on Thursday to show torture, including waterboarding.

She also released details from a report by expert Hawthorne Smith, who has worked with survivors of torture and human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
abuses for nearly three decades. He found bin Amin suffered from complex PTSD.

"[H]e indicates that Mr. bin Amin has endured symptoms of re-experiencing, such as trauma-related nightmares, sometimes three to four times a week; insomnia and other sleep disturbances; and intrusive thoughts," Funk said.

She spoke about bin Amin’s effort to change and the possibility that he be rehabilitated.

Bin Lep attorney Brian Bouffard told the court that his client did provide support to bombing conspirators and has taken responsibility for his actions.

"He is not here to call himself a victim," Bouffard said, adding bin Lep is not asking for mercy,

He said bin Lep offered prayers as he listened to the survivors’ testimony on Wednesday while adding that those efforts changed nothing in terms of the crime.

Bouffard also said that bin Lep had moved past the torture he suffered while in jug and has cooperated with Sherlocks.

Brig. Gen. Jackie Thompson, chief counsel for the Military Commissions Defense Council, expressed hope that guilty pleas and subsequent sentencings of bin Amin and bin Lep would bring closure to the victims and their families. Thompson, who watched the proceedings from the hearing room at the rear of the court, delivered a statement to BenarNews where he noted that the 20-year delay in bringing the men to justice was "extremely distressing and frustrated the desire of everyone for accountability and justice."

Thompson, who is in charge of the military’s defense attorneys, noted that 30 prisoners remain detained at the Guantanamo Bay prison, including 16 who have been cleared for release or transfer.

"The time for repatriating or transferring the cleared men is now," he said in the statement.

"A country that respects the rule of law can and should do better than this."

More can be read about the trial in this Benar News article from a few days ago.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
3 American troops killed, 25 injured in attack on Jordan base near Syria border
[Fox News] Biden blasts 'radical Iran-backed militant groups' after 3 U.S. service members killed in Jordan
And then what? A sternly worded missive from Lloyd Austin? Pronoun training by C.Q. Browning?
Three U.S. service members were killed and 25 others were injured in a drone attack on an outpost in Jordan near the Syria border, U.S. Central Command confirmed on Sunday.

The attack marked a significant escalation in the Middle East, representing the first time American troops have been killed by enemy fire in the region since the Israel-Hamas war began.

"On Jan. 28, three U.S. service members were killed and 25 injured from a one-way attack UAS that impacted at a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border. As a matter of respect for the families and in accordance with DoD policy, the identities of the servicemembers will be withheld until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified," CENTCOM said.
Update at 4:35 p.m. ET:
Most, if not all, of those injured and killed are Army soldiers based in Northern Jordan near the Syrian border at a base known as Tower 22, which has been in support of the counter-ISIS mission for year, the official said.

Some of the 25 plus injured have been medically evacuated from the base, likely to Landstuhl in Germany, according to the official. It is not clear if they were hit while sleeping in the residential compound at the base. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is actively engaged in discussions taking place at the White House about how to respond.

Biden blasted "radical Iran-backed militant groups" in reacting to the attack.

"While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq."

Some 3,000 American troops typically are stationed in Jordan, according to The Associated Press.

The unnamed U.S. officials cited in several reports say the attack happened at Tower 22, a small outpost in northeast Jordan located close to Al Tanf Garrison in southeastern Syria, where U.S. forces have collaborated with local partners combating Islamic State militants, the Jordanian government reportedly is claiming otherwise.

Jordanian state television quoted Muhannad al Mubaidin, a government spokesman, as insisting the attack happened outside the kingdom across the border in Syria. Reuters also cited al Mubaidin as telling Jordanian public broadcaster al Mamlaka television that the attack had targeted the U.S. Al-Tanf base in Syria.

The conflicting information could not be immediately reconciled.

(ISIS) operation inside the notorious al-Hol camp that houses thousands of ISIS family members.

The new operation is in response to an increase in ISIS activities in the camp where the terror group is "taking advantage of the dire humanitarian conditions and the preoccupation of our military and security forces in confronting the attacks of the Ottoman Turkish occupation and its mercenaries and the attacks of the Syrian regime-backed mercenaries," read a statement announcing the start of the operation.

Rojava’s internal security forces and the United States-allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the support of the global coalition against ISIS, are carrying out the operation that is the third phase of Operation Humanity and Security.

"Pursuing ISIS terrorist cells, eliminating their strongholds, and capturing individuals and collaborators involved in terrorist activities, attacks and spreading hard boy ideologies, especially among children" are the objectives of the campaign.

The first phase of the military campaign was launched in March 2021 and the second one in August 2022. Hundreds of ISIS suspects were detained in both phases.

Al-Hol camp houses 45,355 people, mostly women and kiddies. Camp residents come from around the world, but the bulk are 21,633 Syrians and 17,022 Iraqis, according to the latest figures from the US-led global coalition against ISIS.

The camp has been branded a breeding ground for terrorism, with authorities describing it as a "ticking time bomb."

In late December, the SDF announced the killing of a senior ISIS official in the camp.

on Saturday, in response to several rocket attacks on northern Israel earlier in the day.

Fighter jets hit Hezbollah infrastructure in Blida, Marwahin and Ayta ash-Shab, the IDF said.

In one of the Saturday morning attacks from Lebanon, the IDF said it intercepted a "suspicious aerial target," believed to be a drone, that was heading toward Israeli airspace. The incident set off suspected drone infiltration alarms in several communities in the Upper Galilee.

A military spokesperson said the target was downed over Lebanese airspace before it crossed into Israel.

Rocket sirens also sounded in the northern communities of Shlomi Iftach, Mevuot Hermon Regional Council, Ramot Naftali, Malkia and Dishon.

There were no reports of casualties or damage in the attacks.

terror group, triggered by its October 7 massacres.

So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in six civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of nine IDF soldiers and reservists.

There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.
Hezbollah has named 171 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 20 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 19 civilians, three of whom were journalists, have been killed.

The continued violence comes amid diplomatic efforts to avert a full-scale war with Hezbollah. Israel has been warning that it would be forced to move against Hezbollah with force if talks fail and there is no other way to allow residents evacuated from northern border communities to return.

UN resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War, required that Hezbollah be kept away from the border, but the Lebanese army and the UN have never enforced it. Israel has been pushing for allies with strong ties to Lebanon, like La Belle France, to step in amid the mounting violence.

In north, IDF drills for urban warfare as health system preps for attack scenarios

[IsraelTimes] As Northern Command increases readiness for possibility of war with Hezbollah, wide-scale Health Ministry exercise gets ministries, hospitals, HMOs, Home Front Command up to speed

The IDF said Saturday it was further increasing its preparedness on the northern border, publishing footage from recent "intensive" training exercises carried out by the 226th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade, as Hezbollah-led forces in Leb

continue to launch attacks on Israeli communities and military posts along the border.

With fears of a wider conflict growing, the health system in the country’s north was also practicing for potential major security incidents in a broad drill.

In a statement, the IDF said, "As part of the process of increasing readiness on the northern border, the Northern Command held intensive training sessions last week to strengthen competence and readiness for the moment of decision."

The 226th Brigade, under the 146th Division, with combat engineers, tanks, artillery and other infantry forces, carried out drills simulating fighting in urban areas that are applicable to Lebanon, amid winter weather, according to the IDF.

’s October 7 massacre, the IDF said it has carried out more than 100 days’ worth of drills, including 40 battalion-level exercises.

Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.

Israel has warned it can no longer tolerate Hezbollah’s presence along its border following the October 7 atrocities, and has warned that should a diplomatic solution not be reached, it will turn to military action to push Hezbollah northward, as demanded by 2006’s United Nations

Security Council Resolution 1701, which Hezbollah has flouted for years.

The drill by the health system this week dealt with a variety of potential scenarios involving the operation of hospitals, health maintenance organizations’ community clinics, medical evacuations, and the provision of support to chronically ill people in need of immediate assistance.

"We are in a very challenging period that includes treating thousands of physically and emotionally maimed patients, as well as the rehabilitation of thousands," Health Ministry Director General Moshe Bar Siman Tov said on Thursday. "In parallel to dealing with these challenges that began on October 7, we are preparing for the [potential] expansion of the [military] operation in the north and throughout Israel."

"The security reality in Israel has changed, so the healthcare system must change too. Therefore, we are preparing the system as a whole and every part of it in this drill. The change that could happen in the north would affect the hospitals and community in a much broader way than we have experienced thus far," he said.

According to Health Ministry deputy director general Sefi Mendelovich, planning for the drill had been underway in recent months, with the aim of challenging existing assumptions, filling gaps, implementing new technologies, and improving coordination and communication to ensure the best possible care in case of emergency.

Led by the Health Ministry, the comprehensive exercise involved other ministries, hospitals, HMOs, local authorities, the IDF’s Home Front Command, and other branches of the national security apparatus.

The continued violence on the border with Lebanon comes amid diplomatic efforts to avert a full-scale war with Hezbollah. Israel has been warning that it would be forced to move against Hezbollah with force if talks fail and there is no other way to allow residents evacuated from northern border communities to return.

'Bid to ruin bilateral ties': Nine Pakistanis killed, three injured in firing incident in Iran

The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. officially resumed diplomatic ties following a brief strain, at least nine Pak citizens were killed and three sustained injuries in a firing incident near the Pak border in Iran, it emerged on Saturday.

As per Iranian media, nine "foreigners" were slain in an armed attack in the country's southeastern region near the border with Pakistain. The report also stated that "no group has grabbed credit" for the attack.

Two of the victims, who have been identified so far, were labourers hailing from Pakistain's Lodhran area as stated by their family, while five including two brothers belonged to Tehsil Alipur of Punjab's District Muzaffargarh.

"Zubair and his nephew had gone to Iran for labour," Geo News reported citing the family.

The two worked at an auto-repair workshop in Iran.

the families from Alipur reached out to the tehsil's assistant commissioner and demanded help in return for the victims' mortal remains.

Speaking to Geo News, a friend of one of the victims said that the incident took place in the wee hours of Saturday, around 2:30am. He said that three people were maimed in the shooting.

The unfortunate incident came as a jolt in the neighbouring countries' efforts to mend bilateral ties following a short but aggressive episode of cross-border tensions that arose after Iran's surprise attack targeted at a krazed killer outfit inside Pakistain.

‘BID TO RUIN PAK-IRAN TIES': FM JILANI
Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani expressed grief over the gun attack on Pak citizens in Iran, which he said was a "bid to ruin Pak-Iran ties".

Demanding the Iranian government to take action against the elements responsible for the attack, He also extended condolences to the victims' families.

Earlier, Pak Ambassador to Iran Muhammad Muddasir Tipu, who landed in Iran's capital on Friday night, confirmed the shooting of nine Paks in a post on microblogging site X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the envoy, the incident took place in the Iranian city of Saravan, which is located in Sistan-Balochistan

, Iran's bordering province with Balochistan.

"Deeply shocked by [the] horrifying killing of 9 Paks in Saravan. [The] Embassy will extend full support to bereaved families," Amb Mudassir wrote.

In the tweet, he said that an official was also sent to visit the site of the incident and the hospital where the "injured" were being treated.
