[ShabelleMedia] Indian naval forces including special commandos seized a cargo vessel that had been hijacked by Somali pirates, rescuing 17 crew members, a spokesperson for the navy said on Saturday (16 March).
The navy said in a post on social media platform X that all 35 pirates aboard the ship, the Maltese-flagged bulk cargo vessel Ruen, had surrendered, and the ship had been checked for the presence of illegal arms, ammunition and contraband.
Although flying a Maltese flag, Ruen is Bulgarian property and eight of its eighteen crew members at the time when it was hijacked last year are Bulgarian. The deputy captain was released for medical reasons and has returned to Bulgaria.
The news was confirmed by Bulgarian foreign minister Mariya Gabriel late on Saturday, who said her compatriots were now aboard the Indian military vessel.
The Ruen ship may have been used as the base for the takeover of a Bangladesh-flagged fat merchantman off the coast of Somalia earlier this week, the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... naval force said.
The hijacking of the Ruen was the first successful takeover of a vessel involving Somali pirates since 2017 when a crackdown by international navies stopped a rash of seizures in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
Somali pirates had caused chaos in important global waterways for a decade but had been dormant until a resurgence of attacks starting late last year.

The government forces killed Mohammed Isack Mara’adde, a top al-Shabaab commander along with a foreign fighter in the raid carried out in the Dumare, outside Harardhere city.
The total number of Death Eaters neutralized is estimated at least five.
Mara’adde was a wanted al-Shabaab commander in central Somalia after having a leading role in several deadly attacks, according to reports received by Shabelle Media Network.
Al-Shabaab’s spokespeople could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Somali forces backed by local clan fighters took the port town of Harardhere and the nearby town of Galcad from al-Shabaab during a joint military operation in January 2023.
The government and allied clan militias have forced the rebels from swathes of territory in central Somalia since launching a major offensive last August.
The successes have led some officials to claim that al-Shabaab is on its last legs. However, there's more than one way to stuff a chicken... experts have cautioned that the group has been pushed out of major towns before only to regroup and reclaim areas the army cannot hold.

I'm pretty sure there is a never-ending supply of Al-Shabob 'Commanders" to be fed into the Somalia grist mill. Can anyone share the slightest idea of why we are killing this never ending supply of imbeciles? Decades of involvement, billions in treasure, and today, 60% of the land area of "Somalia" is actually occupied by Ethiopian troops". What is the point? Can it simply be that the inertia is simply that no one wants to be responsible for owning the failure signaled when we leave?

[VOAnews] A Marshall Islands-flagged liquefied petroleum gas tanker reported two explosions near the ship as it traveled off the coast of Yemen's port city of Hodeidah, the third merchant vessel attack of the past 48 hours, British security firm Ambrey said Friday.
The master of a merchant vessel located in a similar area reported an explosion a distance off the vessel's starboard beam, according to United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. Reuters was not immediately able to verify whether the same ship was the subject of the two reports.
Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen have repeatedly launched drones and missiles against international commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since mid-November in professed solidarity with Palestinians against Israel's war in Gaza.
Their attacks have disrupted global shipping, forcing firms to take longer and more expensive journeys around the southern end of Africa.
There was no damage or crew injuries reported aboard ships involved in the earlier reports.
The United States and Britain have carried out strikes against Houthi targets in response to the attacks on shipping.
Late on Thursday, the U.S. military said Houthis fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen toward the Gulf of Aden, and to the north, two missiles toward the Red Sea, but there were no injuries or damage reported to U.S. or coalition ships.
The U.S. military's Central Command said early on Friday that it had destroyed nine anti-ship missiles and two drones in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
[Washington Examiner] EXCLUSIVE — Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) rescued 13 Americans from Haiti over the weekend, marking the completion of his second trip to the Caribbean nation.
The congressman said the rescue mission included the recovery of a two-month-old baby and a three-year-old girl. The operation comes less than a week after Mills rescued ten Americans who worked for the "Have Faith" orphanage.
"Like many, the [Americans] made all attempts to work through the [U.S.] government but with no success," Mills told the Washington Examiner. "I’ve now rescued more Americans from Haiti than all the Biden administration. It’s not the first time if we account for the 255 Americans I rescued in October of 2023, and before that, the Americans from Afghanistan in 2021."
The mission comes as the situation in Haiti continues to escalate, with powerful gangs taking over the country’s capital, which has led former Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign. More than one million Haitians are at risk of famine, aid groups say, as the country’s food sources are controlled by gangs and criminals broken out of prison.
Mills slammed the Biden administration on Friday for its failure to lead during global crises, including its handling of the crisis in Haiti.
"You have to almost shame them into doing their job, or to at least shame them into the point where they actually will just support efforts by American citizens who are willing to go over and conduct these rescues and help with the consulate processing once they come out," the congressman said.
American-based nonprofit organizations such as Project Dynamo have also launched rescue operations for U.S. citizens trapped overseas, including rescue missions in Haiti.

[IsraelTimes] A Lebanese man arrested by US border patrol near the Mexico border on March 9 admitted to being a member of the Hezbollah terror group, The New York Post reports.
According to the report, the man was caught trying to sneak over the border and said that he was heading to New York and "hoped to make a bomb."
How charming.
The Post cites internal US immigration documents that showed that the man, named as 22-year-old Basel Bassel Ebbadi, said in an interview that he had "trained with Hezbollah for seven years and served as an active member guarding weapons locations for another four years."
Basel Bassel Ebbadi, 22, was caught by border patrol on March 9 near El Paso, Texas
Ebbadi later claimed in an interview that he had been trying to flee Leb ...an Iranian satrapy currently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers... and Hamas ...not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,... because he "didn’t want to kill people" and said "once you’re in in, you can never get out," according to internal ICE documents.
That sure sounds like taqqiya.
Ebbadi didn’t have documents when he entered the US, claiming they were robbed "with a knife" while he was in Costa Rica, according to the ICE documents.
He also admitted to using a fake birthday and name in Sweden, in Ecuador — where he claimed his father resides — and Panama this year.
Left the real documents with Pops back at the ol’ homestead in Ecuador, one assumes. Is Pops a Hamasnik, too? Does Ecuador care?
He said he had originally hoped to go to New York and then move around the country.
Ebbadi was immediately placed into isolation and was referred for an interview with the Tactical Terrorism Response Team (TTRT) for making "terroristic threats to personnel."
Internal documents show he was marked for deportation from the US, although it was not clear which country he would be returned to.
So many choices! How about GITMO in Cuba?
Border agents recorded 98 encounters of terror watchlisted individuals at both the northern and southern borders in fiscal year 2022, an almost twice as many, 172, in the 2023 fiscal year which ends September 20.
So far in the first four months of 2024, 59 people have been apprehended, according to federal data.
The total number of terror watchlisted encounters between fiscal years 2017 and 2021 amounted to just 30 people, but after that time the criteria for being on the list, which has never been disclosed, was expanded.
No doubt the Biden administration added Catholics and conservative white men to the list.
Just days before former President Donald Trump ...dictatorial for repealing some (but not all) of the diktats of his predecessor, misogynistic because he likes pretty girls, homophobic because he doesn't think gender bending should be mandatory, truly a man for all seasons...... ’s recent visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, a terror-watchlisted migrant crossed into the area illegally, according to an internal agency memo The Post obtained. Colombian national Carlos Obed Yepez-Bedoya, 40, was first apprehended by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), which handed him into the custody of Border Patrol. Border agents made the determination about Yepez-Bedoya’s alleged terror ties.
"This underscores the need for border security measures as potential threats to both public safety and national security are evident and exploit security vulnerabilities," Texas DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez told The Post at the time.
"The federal government has failed to enact border security measures, and the state of Texas, through Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, will continue to take unprecedented action to help secure the border," Olivarez said.
[IsraelTimes] The Israel Defense Forces says troops are operating overnight at the al-Shifa hospital complex in Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response... City amid intelligence that senior Hamas ...a regional Iranian catspaw,... officials were in the area and using the hospital to plan and carry out terror activity.
In a statement overnight, the military says troops at the hospital were "briefed in advance regarding the importance of preventing harm to civilians, patients, medical teams, and medical equipment" and that Arabic speakers were with the security forces to facilitate communication with patients and staff.
IDF doctors were also on hand, according to the announcement.
The patients and the medical teams were not ordered to evacuate the hospital but the military created pathways for civilians to leave the area, the IDF says.
Once the operation at the hospital is over, "the IDF will continue the humanitarian effort and provide food, water and additional supplies to the patients and civilians in the complex," the military says.
In an accompanying video message, IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says the IDF is conducting a "high-precision operation in limited areas of Shifa Hospital, following concrete intelligence that demanded immediate action."
"We know that senior Hamas bandidossnuffies have regrouped inside the hospital," he says, "and are using it to command attacks against Israel."
He says forces have undergone "specified training to prepare them for the sensitive environment and the complex scenarios they may encounter" at the hospital.
"We seek no harm to the civilians Hamas is hiding behind," he says, adding that the IDF will conduct its operation "with caution and care while ensuring that the hospital continues its important functions."
Hagari says IDF doctors were with the troops "to assist those in need."
"We call upon all Hamas bandidossnuffies hiding in [the] hospital, surrender immediately. Medical facilities should never be exploited for terror. Hamas must be held accountable," he says.
The IDF has repeatedly accused Hamas of deliberately operating from civilian areas, including hospitals, schools, mosques, and shelters.
Israel has presented evidence to back up long-standing allegations that Hamas used al-Shifa Hospital as a major operational hub and command center and that the hospital sat atop tunnels housing headquarters for Hamas fighters using patients as shields. The US has previously corroborated the evidence presented by Israel.
Last month, the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize... reported that a tunnel underneath al-Shifa was used extensively by Hamas for military operations and is nearly twice as long as the IDF had previously revealed.
[IsraelTimes] Security forces operating at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City overnight came under fire by terrorists “from within the hospital compound,” the IDF and the Shin Bet say in a statement.
Israeli security forces “returned fire and hit the terrorists,” the statement says.
Earlier, the IDF sent out an announcement that an operation at the hospital was underway amid “concrete intelligence” that Hamas operatives had regrouped at the hospital and were planning terror activity
“The IDF and the Shin Bet are now working in a targeted manner to thwart terror [activity] and arrest terrorists in the area of the Al-Shifa hospital, following intelligence information indicating the presence of terrorists in the hospital and the use of the hospital’s infrastructure to carry out terrorist acts,” the two organizations say in the statement
“As part of the activity, during the encirclement, terrorists opened fire from within the hospital compound at our forces, who returned fire and hit the terrorists. Our forces continue to operate in the area of the hospital,” the announcement reads.
Witnesses in Gaza City told AFP they saw tanks surround the hospital site.

Senior Hamas commander killed in Al Shifa raid Faiq Mabhouh senior member of the Hamas internal security police, believed responsible for the execution of a northern Gaza clan leader after reports Israel reached out to the clan to oversee food distribution
[IsraelTimes] IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi in a press statement says Hamas ...the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,... is trying to hide the fate of Marwan Issa, the deputy commander of the terror group’s military wing who was targeted in an Israeli strike last week, while stating that the military is readying itself to operate in southern Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. "We are fighting a just, multi-front, and complex war, with many achievements, which are expanding. We still have a long way to go until the goals of the war are achieved," he says, adding that "in the Gaza Strip, we are surprising the enemy, initiating, and further deepening the achievements."
He says that in northern Gaza, the IDF is "returning and raiding areas where we operated, with new intelligence, using different methods, expanding the damage to Hamas, killing operatives and destroying infrastructure in a targeted and high-quality manner."
In Khan Younis, Halevi says the IDF is continuing to dismantle Hamas’s brigade in the city in southern Gaza. "We killed many bandidosLions of Islam and arrested many senior bandidosLions of Islam for interrogation. Those who remain alive, are hiding, have difficulty functioning, we will reach them too," he vows.
Speaking on last week’s Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... on Issa and other operatives in central Gaza’s Nuseirat, Halevi says the IDF "attacked senior Hamas commanders... whose fate Hamas tries very hard to hide."
"We embarked on this operation after many days of complex planning, creating the operational conditions, and gathering sufficient intelligence. This is a very important achievement for the IDF. A capability we have built over the years together with the Shin Bet, a combination of high-quality intelligence and precise fire from the Air Force, which enables the elimination of bigwigs underground," he says.
"This attack is an expression of the IDF’s ability to reach the most complex places, at the right time, and with high precision. We will continue the effort to eliminate the bigwigs. This is a major goal in the war," Halevi says.
Amid the ongoing fighting, he says the IDF continues to plan operations in "areas where we have not yet operated," referring to southern Gaza’s Rafah and some areas in central Gaza.
"The IDF is preparing for offenses in the additional areas and together with the political echelon we will decide on the timing and the appropriate conditions," Halevi says.
"As soon as it is decided, the IDF will act with full force and determination. We are determined to act wherever Hamas is building its strength. It is wrong to leave Hamas brigades and Hamas battalions functioning," he continues.
He says "Hamas can lay down its weapons and surrender, otherwise, we will continue with great force, until the complete dissolution of Hamas, until the hostages are returned to their homes. The return of the hostages is one of the goals of the war, and the IDF will do everything to realize it."
Halevi refuses to comment on the hostage negotiation talks, saying that "we are working with determination in every way to bring about the release of the hostages."
"One thing is certain, the IDF will implement any decision that is made and will know how to continue fighting at every stage," he says.
Regarding Ramadan, Halevi says that Hamas "has chosen to escalate during Ramadan," while the IDF is "more alert, strong and prepared, everywhere, all the time, non-stop."
"Every development in one arena affects the other arenas of war. We work first of all to maintain security, thwart and prevent terror attacks, alongside the desire to facilitate Ramadan," he adds.
On the northern front, Halevi says the military continues to damage Hezbollah’s capabilities and kill its operatives.
"Hezbollah started with strikes, and is paying a heavy, ever-increasing price," he says.
Halevi says he is aware of the "great difficulty of the residents of the north, who have been evacuated from their homes for a very long time."
"We will return the residents only with full security. To that end, we will go through any means necessary. The IDF and its commanders are determined, ready for this, this is our duty," he says.

Syrian sources report that the forces of the Imam Al-Baqir Brigade, consisting of militias of the rather influential Al-Baqir tribe, crossed the Euphrates and occupied several positions in the vicinity of the village of Muhaimidah, knocking out pro-American formations from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from checkpoints ).
The cause of the conflict is said to be an insult by a member of the SDF to Arab tribes in the presence of one of the Al-Bakir sheikhs. The Al-Baqir Brigade itself is part of the Local Defense Forces (not to be confused with the National Defense Forces), an association of pro-government militias in the provinces of Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor, created on a tribal basis with the active participation and sponsorship of Iran and, at a certain stage, Russia.
In the fall, this troubled region was already exploding with uprisings of Arab tribes, which have extremely strained relations with the Kurdish administration, as we wrote about. Then, by the way, the Al-Bakira tribe supported the rebels.
They do enjoy these little explosions from time to time.
