Somebody sees a guy standing on a balcony of the Palestine Hotel looking into a boxy device mounted on a tripod. Innocent newsie videoing the action, or a hostile spotting for the artillery? US forces go to great lengths to identify the guy, calling the hotel and various local news agencies, even calling back to the States to try to get a handle on the situation.
Unable to get confirmed ID, they eventually smoke the guy with a tank round. Turns out he was a reporter for one of the news agencies. Oopsie! Media shitstorm ensues. (note that working for Rooters or whoever does not mean he was an innocent bystander)
